This Life's Song: The Genius Rune Master
Chapter 2 First Encounter
At this moment, no one knows how far this tiny baby will grow up to be. No one thinks about whether he will cause any waves. Night is falling, only the barking of dogs remains, and every household is drifting off to sleep.
Darkness is the most conspicuous thing, but when a light appears in the darkness, it becomes even more obvious, though no one can see it at this moment.
"Madam, we have arrived at Hualuo Licheng," a sedan chair carrier said.
A woman adorned with a hairpin and dressed in luxurious clothes slowly stepped down from the sedan chair, carrying a three- or four-year-old child in her arms. The child seemed uneasy, and the woman gently stroked the child to comfort her. "It's too late to enter the city now. Let's rest outside the city and enter at dawn," the woman said softly.
"Then you'll have to go through a lot, Madam. Please rest in the sedan chair for a while, so the young master doesn't catch a cold," the sedan chair bearers advised.
The woman nodded after hearing this, and slowly stepped into the sedan chair. Silence returned to the surroundings.
Around dawn, the city gate guard yawned and slowly opened the gate. At that moment, some more people came behind him wanting to enter the city. As soon as they entered the city gate, they were infected by the atmosphere, which was warm and peaceful.
Children are playing, an old man is sitting at his doorway smoking his pipe, muttering, "Slow down, don't fall!" and a business owner is opening his door to prepare for business.
In the distance, there was a Happiness Inn. The group went in, asked for a superior room, and gave the sedan chair carriers some silver to send them away.
I asked for some hot water to wash the child, and after eating, I carried the child towards the market.
"Ah Da, let's go buy clothes for Xiao Xing'er. Can you help your mother choose which ones to pick?" the woman said as she looked through the clothes.
"Mother, I don't know either. Maybe we should just buy two sets so we can change them," Ah Da thought for a moment and replied.
"Well, that's good. Xing'er is growing, it would be a waste to buy too many." After saying that, she took two sets of clothes and continued walking forward.
Just then, a little boy bumped into Ah Da's arms. "Ouch! Little brother, are you alright? Did you hurt yourself?" Ah Da exclaimed and quickly asked.
"Brother, I'm fine," the child said sweetly in his innocent voice.
"I'm so sorry, the child is so young and doesn't know any better. Is he hurt? Should we take him to the doctor?" The woman was looking at jewelry when she turned around and her child was gone. Hearing Ah Da's exclamation, she assumed he was injured and quickly apologized.
"It's alright, he's so small, how could he hurt me? As long as his little brother isn't hurt," Ah Da said shyly.
"It's alright, my son is tough. It's good that the young master is alright," the old woman said hurriedly.
The two spoke very politely, and suddenly felt very relaxed. "You don't seem to be from out of town. Would you like to come in and have a seat?" Meng Shi hurriedly invited.
"How could I possibly trouble you?" the woman said politely.
"It's nothing, my humble abode is simple, please don't mind," Meng Shi sincerely invited.
The woman nodded in agreement, and the group left chatting and laughing.
"This is my home, please come in, Madam Leng," said Madam Meng.
The two had already exchanged surnames on the way, so they spoke more easily now and addressed each other as sisters.
Let Ah Da take the two children to play by themselves. The two women sat down. "We don't have any rich people's tea here. It's just some herbal tea we brewed ourselves, so please don't mind it," Meng Shi said.
"Is it just the three of you living in your sister's house? It doesn't look like there's a fourth person living there," Leng asked in surprise.
"It's shameful to say, but my husband, while hunting to support the family, tragically fell into a ravine and drowned," Meng said sadly.
"What should we do? I didn't mean to bring up your painful memories," said Madam Leng, somewhat flustered.
"It's nothing, it's been a long time, and it's not that painful anymore."
"Your sister must have had a hard time taking care of the child all these years on her own," Leng Shi said with concern.
"This isn't about knowing a few medicinal herbs, drying them, and selling them to make a living," Meng explained.
"What about Xing'er?" Madam Leng asked curiously, since the head of the household had been dead for many years, what about this child...?
“Xing’er, this child is quite pitiful. A’da brought her back from the river yesterday. And a strange thing happened yesterday.”
"Just before A-Da brought Xing'er back, the sun disappeared, and daytime became like nighttime. The elders said it was a solar eclipse, a truly wondrous sight!" Meng Shi exclaimed in amazement.
Hearing this, Leng Shi was indeed slightly disturbed. She was no ordinary person; she had seen a lot of the world.
"By the way, I wonder why you came to this place, sister?" Meng asked.
"I've come to see Venerable Ye; I have something to ask of you," Leng Shi said solemnly.
"Brother, is she a little sister? What's a little sister? Is it fun?" the young master asked innocently.
“You can’t play with your little sister, but we can coax her to play. She’ll make you smile and be happy,” Ah Da said mischievously.
Spring comes and autumn goes, flowers fall. Beyond the city lies a mountain called Yunlian Mountain, named for its perpetual shroud in mist. Some say they've seen immortals there, immortals who can fly and burrow underground, but these are merely legends. Few have actually witnessed them; those who have either joined the mountain in cultivation or are no longer alive. No one knows that atop the mountain, above the mist, lies the abode of immortals, unobstructed by clouds.
At this moment, in a room, a teacher was lecturing on the art of sword control. Various books were placed around the room, and students, both men and women, sat in the middle, listening attentively to what the teacher was saying.
"Alright, that's all for today. When you get back, you can first infuse your spiritual energy into the sword and try to control it so that it doesn't fall. After that, you'll need to practice sword control until you're proficient. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't slack off. You may leave now." With that, the master left.
"Little Star, let's go! Brother will teach you how to fly on a sword!" a twelve or thirteen-year-old boy said with a laugh.
"I don't want to! Leng Yaoye, please have mercy on me. Is it fun to always tease me?" The little girl, who looked about nine years old, said angrily.
"How could I possibly tease Xing'er, who is so adorable?" With that, the boy walked away happily.
"Ah! I really don't know what he's thinking all day, it's a bit..." Xing'er sighed.
"Brother, are you going back? I want to go see Mother too!" As she walked forward, she suddenly noticed a boy who looked about seventeen or eighteen years old and hurriedly called out.
"Xing'er! Have you made any progress in your studies today?" The man was exceptionally handsome, with willow-leaf eyebrows and large, grape-like eyes. He wore a light blue robe, and his long hair was tied up with a jade hairpin. He was truly dashing and imposing.
"Brother, I've been missing you, and all you do is ask about my studies as soon as you arrive. You're such a spoilsport!" Xing'er said, looking aggrieved and clutching her sleeve.
"Brother Xing'er is only doing this for your own good. Alright, I won't say anything more. If you want to go back, let's go together. It's been so long since I've seen Mother." After saying that, he walked forward.
"Yes, I miss my mother too," Xing'er said sweetly.
The path home seems so long, and I always long to hurry up so I can finally see the home that once sheltered me from the wind and rain.
As soon as I arrived at the door, I heard a cough, which suggested that the owner was sick.
The thatched hut was somewhat dilapidated and looked quite old, but it could still provide shelter from the wind and rain.
"Mother, my brother and I have come back to see you!" Xing'er called out happily.
"Ah Da and Xing'er, you're back! It's good to be back. How were you doing on the mountain? Were you often injured? Did you eat well? Were you bullied?" The woman's hair was now gray, her eyes were full of vicissitudes, and there were a few wrinkles on her face, but they did not affect her appearance. After asking anxiously, she looked at the two children in front of her with questioning eyes.
When their own children go out, no matter how old they are, the mother is always the one who worries the most.
“Mother, my brother and I are both very good. Master is very kind to us. Mother, look, I’ve even learned to fly on a sword, although I’m not as good as my brother,” Xing’er said, sticking out her tongue and giving a mischievous smile.
“Xing’er, you silly child, I’ve already told you not to call me Mother. You were raised by your master, I only took care of you for a few days,” Meng Shi comforted her.
"Xing'er doesn't care. It was my brother who brought me back, and it was my mother who took me in and sent me to my master. That's why I am who I am today. I want to call her my mother. My master also often teaches me to be grateful and repay kindness." Xing'er's innocent face turned serious as she spoke earnestly.
"Mother, what's wrong with your health? I heard you coughing before I even came in," Ah Da quickly changed the subject, otherwise Xing'er would have gone on and on.
"It's nothing serious. I just caught a bit of typhoid fever recently, but I'll be fine in a few days," Meng said casually.
"It's rare for you to come back, let's buy some good food and cook something delicious for you two," he said, and walked outside.
"Mother, that's enough. You're not well, so don't overwork yourself," Ah Da said worriedly, pulling his mother back.
“Even though we’re not hungry, Mom, let me tell you about the interesting things that have happened on the mountain these past few years,” Xing’er said excitedly.
"Mother, let Xing'er do the talking. I'll go cook. You can rest." Ah Da said as he walked outside.
In the mysterious area, a woman paced anxiously. "How could this be? So many years have passed, and there's still no news. Could it be that they went to that place..."
"Someone come here... do you have any news about Yaoye?" Shiwei was summoned and asked.
"Madam, it just so happens that the young master sent a letter from home. Please take a look." After saying this, he took out the letter from his bosom.
The envelope was addressed to: - Dear Mother,
Your unfilial son has been away from home for several years, causing you, Mother, much worry. I miss you dearly, Mother. I will definitely return to celebrate your birthday. I am well and hope you will not worry.
Unfilial son: Leng Yaoye
