This Life's Song: The Genius Rune Master

Chapter 18 A Different Kind of Illusion

Lianxue watched from the sidelines, tears streaming down her face without her realizing it. There was nothing she could do but watch as this tragedy unfolded. If she could act, the thing she would most want to do is kill Bai Lin; he was too hateful.

"Rest in peace, I'll treat you well," Bai Lin said, raising his sword to deliver another blow to her heart.

Lianxue instinctively reached out, only to find nothing.

"Stop!" Su Mu suddenly appeared, leaping to block the sword, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

"Why did you treat her so cruelly?" came the question from his mouth.

He turned and engaged Bai Lin in a fierce fight, and both of them sustained injuries of varying degrees.

Finally, Su Mu delivered a spinning kick that sent Bai Lin sprawling, then turned and picked up Qinglian before flying away.

Just then, a voice came through: "Isn't my life tragic?"

Lianxue turned around and found a soul-like Qinglian standing beside her, asking her a question.

Such a question was too heavy. "Did Bai Lin die later?" Lian Xue didn't answer her question but instead asked...

"I don't know if he's dead or not." The woman waved her hand and the scenery disappeared, revealing a cave. Leng Yaoye was right next to her. Inside the cave, there was a bed with Qinglian's remains lying on it, along with tables, chairs, and tea sets, indicating that someone had lived there.

"Lianxue, where did you go just now?" Leng Yaoye frowned and asked Lianxue, seemingly unsurprised, after glancing at the illusory figure beside her.

"I entered the illusion and saw the story of Senior Qinglian..." Lianxue glanced at him and returned.

"So that's how it is. I actually entered an illusion too. What I saw was Su Mu's story." Leng Yaoye glanced at the illusory figure again and sighed.

"Oh! What did you see?" Qinglian asked hurriedly before Lianxue could ask further.

“I saw something you never knew,” Leng Yaoye recalled what he had just witnessed.

“I saw a man named Su Mu. He was gentle and refined. When he was very young, his father married a stepmother who often abused him. Once, he was even beaten until he was covered in bruises…” Leng Yaoye recalled as he began to narrate.

One cold winter day, a boy covered in wounds and dressed in thin clothes was driven out of the back door. The boy shivered from the cold and cried silently.

Half an hour later, the boy's body began to stiffen. Just then, a girl came running over, skipping and playing.

"Hey handsome, why are you dressed so scantily? Wait a minute!" the girl said before running off.

The boy thought she wouldn't care about him anymore and that he would have to fend for himself.

A moment later, the girl ran back with a coat. "Put this on to warm up," she said, then picked up some snow and started rubbing it on his hands. He instinctively backed away.

"Don't be afraid. You've been frozen for so long. You have to rub yourself with snow before you can go into a warm room, otherwise you'll get frostbite." He said, ignoring the boy's shivering, he pulled him over and continued to rub his skin.

About an hour later, the little girl rubbed the boy's hands and feet. His little hands were red from the cold, and his face was rosy.

"Thank you," the boy said stiffly.

"It's okay. When I was little, I was naughty and always ran into the snow, and that's how my mother got me like this. Since I saw it, I couldn't just ignore it." The girl's face was full of sunshine, and her smile touched the boy.

"Alright, you should go home now, or your parents will worry," the girl said to the boy as she stood up, patting her bottom.

"My mother is long gone, and now I only have a stepmother," the boy said sadly, rolling up his sleeves to show the girl.

"Ah! Your stepmother hit you like this? How could she do this?" The girl pouted, looking unhappy.

"Wait for me!" the girl said, then ran off again.

A moment later, she appeared with a medicine bottle in her hand. "Here, take this. Remember to apply the medicine yourself when you get back. I should go back now, or my mother will be looking for me." She put the medicine bottle in the boy's hand, got up, and ran away happily.

The boy got up to chase after the girl, but saw her run into a large courtyard and disappear from sight.

From then on, he knew that a ray of hope called Qinglian had appeared in his heart.

He began to study hard to avoid conflict with his stepmother.

But one day she left, I heard she went to a sect.

He tried desperately to catch up with her, and was later discovered by the sect leader of the Kuoyue Sect who was traveling around and was taken in as his last disciple.

Through his own hard work and diligence, he finally achieved good results.

"My disciple! You're not young anymore. Have you brought back a girl you like for your master to see?" The old man's words were full of concern.

"I do have someone I like, but I'm not sure what she thinks," Su Mu said shyly to her master.

"I wonder which young lady has caught Mu'er's eye?" The master gazed at her with a smile.

"It's Qinglian from the Flower Peak Sect, but I still need to respect her wishes." He lowered his head, as if to reassure himself.

"Hmm, I've heard that girl is quite good. Wait a moment, I'll write a letter of divorce to that old woman Qin." After saying that, he took a pen, ink, paper and inkstone, wrote some words, folded them up and handed them to Su Mu.

"Alright, go ahead. I hope you win the heart of your beauty." The old man stroked his beard and nodded with satisfaction.

"Disciple thanks Master." After receiving the letter, Su Mu went to Huafeng Sect alone, paid his respects to the sect leader, and handed the letter to his master.

The sect leader was very pleased and personally agreed to act as his matchmaker.

As he watched the woman in white slowly enter the hall, his heart was filled with turmoil, but on the surface he remained calm and composed.

Listening to her pleasantries, I really wanted to go over and hug her.

But I could also see that the aloofness in her eyes, the feigned admiration, was actually a desire to be alone with her.

Her hesitation and inner conflict were noticed, and trying to find topics to talk about didn't work.

Helpless, I could only ask, and the answer I received was, "Well, I might have to disappoint you, I actually already have someone I like."

It felt like a bolt from the blue, but I had to pretend to be calm.

"I see. Please don't take it to heart, young lady. It was my fault for not finding out clearly and causing you trouble. Why don't you accompany me to stroll around the Flower Peak Sect? I'll tell the sect leader later that we don't get along."

Afterwards, seeing her laughing heartily, I thought, "As long as she's happy, why should I force myself?"

She followed her all the way, listening to her introduction, without realizing that her gaze was always following her.

He smoothed things over for her and the sect leader, then hurriedly left.

Half a month later, he still couldn't let go of his unease and hoped to see her again. When he arrived at the place, he heard a constant roar. When he reached the top of the mountain, he saw her covered in blood and questioning him repeatedly. He watched as she was stabbed, but the man refused to let go and verbally insulted her. He raised his sword and tried to give her a fatal blow. Without thinking, he dodged and blocked the attack.

After kicking the man away, he looked at her lying on the ground. He had only one thought in his mind: to save her. He picked her up, carried her down the mountain, found a cave, and treated her wounds. She remained unconscious.

She succumbed to blood loss and a stab wound to her heart.

He went out and bought some supplies, and when he came back, he saw her cold body.

He was in unbearable pain, tormenting himself, until finally he decided to preserve her soul, even at the cost of his own life.

He found an ancient scroll that said, "As long as you use the blood of your loved ones and draw them with your own soul, your loved one will exist in the world."

He fed her soul daily according to the instructions in the fragment. Finally, after feeding her for forty-nine days, he forcibly pulled his own soul out, ignoring his excruciating pain, and came to her side. He finally succeeded; her soul gradually solidified. However, he realized that going back was impossible because it was a fragment, and incomplete information and defects were unavoidable.

Watching his own soul fade away little by little, and then seeing her soul ripple, he felt comforted and satisfied, as the person he had longed for vanished completely.

"Actually, he knew there might be danger when he used the incomplete scroll, and he was afraid you wouldn't be able to accept it when you woke up, so..." Leng Yaoye didn't finish his sentence, but it seemed he had said everything.

Needless to say, the fate of the Flower Peak Sect is clear just by looking at this mountain.

Leng Yaoye walked to the right wall and tapped the array with his finger to break it. A smaller hole appeared, and inside sat a skeleton sitting cross-legged. The blue robe the skeleton was wearing had been reduced to strips of cloth.

Qinglian was heartbroken. "I never imagined he loved me so deeply, yet I broke his heart and took his life." She was a soul without tears, but her trembling body had already told the whole story. She came to the body and gently stroked it.

Turning back, the illusory figure of the Azure Lotus bowed in thanks, saying, "Thank you, my two young friends, for letting me know the truth."

"Senior, you don't need to be so polite. We only witnessed the event and didn't do anything," Lian Xue hurriedly waved her hand.

"Yes, we just accidentally wandered into this place. We didn't do anything useful to you." Leng Yaoye was also impressed by the man's devotion, but also felt sorry for him and his fate.

"No... it's you who made me realize that there's someone who has always loved me, even willing to sacrifice himself for me. I have no regrets in this life," Qinglian said, concealing the sorrow in her eyes.

"Little girl, this bracelet is for you. You two look like a perfect match, and you'll definitely be happier than us in the future." He walked back to his skeleton, took off a bracelet, and handed it to Lianxue.

"I can't accept it. I shouldn't accept something I haven't done right by. Besides, I'm still young. How could I possibly be paired with him?" She hurriedly shook her head, then added in her defense.

"Hehe... Little girl, you're so cute. Here, keep it. These things are useless to me now." Without waiting for Lianxue's consent, he pulled Lianxue's hand and put it on her wrist.

Looking up at Leng Yaoye, she said, "Take anything you can use from that cave."

"Thank you so much, Senior," Lianxue said, bowing deeply in gratitude.

"Since you say so, senior, then I won't stand on ceremony." Leng Yaoye didn't refuse. She was right. These things were useless to them. Walking into the cave, there was a sword hanging on the wall and a book beside her.
