Ahhhhh, high-altitude survival!
Chapter 31, Potato Mine
The closer Lin Yue got, the more certain she became that the house was definitely man-made. From the size of the walls to the style of the roof, everything except the materials was identical to the one she had built herself on the platform.
So, could this so-called floating island actually be the platform of the previous batch of players, or even the batch before that?
If this conjecture is correct, the player must be quite powerful to be able to build such a huge floating island.
So, where did this player go now?
How did this floating island become a source of livelihood for later generations?
Thinking deeper, how many generations has this survival game been running? The system says there might be life-threatening danger after dark. Is that danger a wild beast, or something else indescribable, like... a soul?
Lin Yue's thoughts were like a wild horse, flying further and further away. She couldn't help but shudder again and had to slap her cheeks hard to try to calm herself down.
Everything is still unknown, so there's no need to panic or scare yourself unnecessarily.
Even if things are really as she thinks, she still wants to explore this island. After all, who doesn't want to live a good life?
Skywing's flight speed was not slow, and soon Lin Yue had arrived not far in front of the stone house.
She stood there and carefully observed her surroundings. Sure enough, she discovered many more clues.
In front of the stone house, there was a spacious flat area. Although it was covered with a lot of sand and soil, the outline of the wooden floor underneath could still be discerned through the covering.
Behind the stone house, there was a small pond with some aquatic plants floating on its surface, and the water had a slightly greenish tinge. The wild grass around the pond grew very lushly, intertwined with each other, exuding a desolate atmosphere amidst its verdant greenery. Lin Yue did not approach, but secretly guessed at the purpose of the pond.
Directly in front of the stone house was a wooden door, covered in a thick layer of dust, as if a gentle breeze could stir up a cloud of dust. Cobwebs clung to the corners of the doorframe, proving that no one had been here for a long time.
Lin Yue walked to the door, hesitated for a moment, and then gently pushed the door open.
The door opened with a push, releasing a pungent smell of old wood, as if time had stood still, sealing away countless memories. Sunlight streamed through the broken window, dappling the dusty floor, while fine dust particles floated in the air, swirling and dancing as the door opened.
The room was very dark. Lin Yue held her breath and, after a long while, slowly stepped inside.
The room was sparsely furnished; at a glance, one could only see a wooden bed, a set of wooden table and chairs, and two boxes stacked together.
Lin Yue ignored the furniture and walked straight towards the two wooden crates.
The crate was exactly the same style as the airdropped wooden crates, so the previous owner of this place probably used an empty crate to store things, just like I did. I just wonder what was inside.
Lin Yue gently pushed open the latches on the first wooden crate.
[The wooden crate has been opened, yielding 2 Exquisite Daggers (Superior), 1 Fine Steel Telescopic Fishing Rod (Perfect), and 1 Fine Steel Axe (Superior).]
Lin Yue understood; it turned out this was the homeowner's toolbox, no wonder it was placed on the top shelf.
She put away the toolbox and then tried to open the second wooden box.
It was only when they pushed it that they discovered the wooden box was actually locked.
The tools above, all of them of perfect quality, were unlocked, but this wooden box was locked. Does that mean the contents inside are more valuable than the tools?
Lin Yue's mood brightened. She glanced at her bracelet; it was almost 4:30 PM. Not wanting to waste time, she decided to pack up the box and look at it more carefully when she returned to the platform.
Who knew that this time they would fail? Even though there was still space in the backpack, they just couldn't put the box away no matter what they did.
How is this going?
Lin Yue's first reaction was to check her mental strength. After finding that her mental strength was normal, she carefully examined the box in front of her.
That box looks almost identical to the one before it, with roughly the same thickness of dust, so why can't it be closed up?
She crouched down and examined it closely for a while before realizing something was wrong. The bottom of the box seemed to be tightly connected to the floor of the stone house. She took out the pair of superior-grade daggers and tried them out, only to find that the two were perfectly aligned, with no gaps at all where a dagger could be inserted.
No wonder this box can't be packed away. Even with the biggest backpack compartments, it's probably impossible to pack a house inside.
How to do this?
After a moment's thought, Lin Yue took out the wooden box containing the Peashooters.
Although the lock on this box was different from the ones she had seen on the platform before, and she didn't know if it was of a higher level, she didn't have any other suitable tools at the moment, so she decided to give it a try.
Lin Yue took two steps back, put down the Peashooter, adjusted the target, aimed, and launched an attack.
"Pfft—" A pea shooter flew straight ahead.
Then, it bounced back!
Lin Yue's eyes widened in astonishment. This was the first time she had ever encountered a situation where a pea shooter could still remain intact after hitting something. Was it because the box was made of a special material? Or was it that the pea shooter simply failed to break through the box's defenses and was thus bounced back?
Lin Yue ran over, picked up the bullet, tore off the outer shell, threw it into her mouth, and then put the Peashooter back into her backpack.
The pea bullet's attack power is 20 points, which doesn't seem enough.
As time continued to slip away, Lin Yue dared not delay any longer; giving up was naturally something she was unwilling to do.
If she couldn't take it with her today, the floating island might just randomly go somewhere else tomorrow. After thinking for a while, Lin Yue gritted her teeth and took out a brand new plant – "Potato Mine".
