Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life

Chapter 72 Friendship's Path of Loss and Return: Honesty and Longing in the Garden

Su Xuan had already secretly planned to have a heart-to-heart talk with the two of them, to lay out and explain all the things that had been lingering in their hearts lately.

She understood the importance of communication and hoped that this exchange could resolve some potential misunderstandings and conflicts. However, things didn't go as planned. Just as she was about to take action, her mentor suddenly approached her and gave her an urgent and important task—to organize a vast amount of historical data.

The documents were piled up like mountains, requiring a lot of effort to identify, classify, and archive. Time was tight and the task was heavy, leaving Su Xuan with no time to sit down and have a proper chat with the two of them.

Filled with helplessness and regret, she could only temporarily shelve the plan and devote herself to the work assigned by her mentor, hoping that she would have the opportunity to rekindle this unfinished conversation in the future.

The two men had been waiting for Su Xuan's invitation. They couldn't understand why Su Xuan had suddenly stood them up, and doubts and unease gradually crept into their hearts.

One of them guessed that Su Xuan might have changed her mind and was deliberately avoiding them; the other worried that something unexpected might have happened. They wandered along the campus paths, glancing from time to time in the direction Su Xuan often appeared, hoping to catch a glimpse of that familiar figure.

After several busy days, Su Xuan finally finished organizing the data. Feeling guilty, she went to find the two men, wanting to explain. When she appeared before them, a complex expression of surprise mixed with resentment flashed in their eyes.

Su Xuan quickly explained the professor's urgent task and the pressing nature of the data compilation. After listening, the two men's doubts gradually dissipated. They understood Su Xuan's predicament and felt somewhat embarrassed for their previous unfounded suspicions.

Seeing the changes in their expressions, Su Xuan knew that their friendship had not been damaged by this setback, so she suggested finding a quiet corner to make up for their long-awaited conversation. The three of them smiled at each other and walked towards the campus garden, the sunlight shining on them and creating a harmonious interplay of light and shadow.

Stepping into the garden, the vibrant flowers seemed to cheer for their improved relationship. Su Xuan broke the silence first, speaking softly, "Actually, I've been thinking about us a lot lately. When the words in those documents flash before my eyes, images of our time together still occasionally surface in my mind. I wish we could have cleared things up sooner. Meng Jiawei, Cheng Ran, I'm really afraid you'll be angry with me."

Meng Jiawei responded with a smile: "We were the same way, walking back and forth on the paths, almost wearing out the marks on those paths, and having all sorts of wild thoughts. I even wondered if you had some kind of grudge against us, which is why you suddenly stopped talking to us."

Cheng Ran nodded in agreement, "I was even more worried that something might have happened to you, but I couldn't get in touch with you, and that feeling was really awful. But now that the misunderstanding has been cleared up, I find those days of anxiety a bit funny."

They walked to a bench in the garden and sat down. Su Xuan looked at the blooming flowers around her and said slowly, "We can't do this again. We need to talk things out promptly and not let unfounded suspicions ruin our relationship. Let's take this as a lesson. No matter how busy I am in the future, I will prioritize our communication."

Meng Jiawei and Cheng Ran both agreed. Meng Jiawei reached out and gently patted Su Xuan's shoulder, "Yes, we need to trust each other more and not be suspicious so easily. Especially me, I shouldn't have been so impulsive as to think the worst."

Just then, a butterfly fluttered down, dancing gracefully before them, seemingly drawn by their renewed harmony. Su Xuan's gaze followed the butterfly's movement, a relieved smile spreading across her face. "Just like this butterfly, so free and unrestrained, our friendship should be just as carefree, unburdened by unnecessary constraints. Meng Jiawei, you need to work on your impulsiveness; don't always jump to conclusions. Cheng Ran, don't keep things bottled up; speak your mind."

They continued chatting in the garden, reminiscing about the fun they had shared studying late into the night at the library, and discussing their hopes for traveling together in the future, their laughter never ceasing.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows that mirrored their bright and warm mood. A gentle breeze, carrying the fragrance of flowers, caressed their faces, dispelling the last vestiges of gloom from their hearts, leaving only pure and beautiful affection flowing quietly in this corner of the garden. This foreshadowed that after this minor turmoil, their relationship would become even stronger and closer, enabling them to honestly face all the joys and sorrows of the future.

As they were talking, Cheng Ran's phone suddenly rang. He answered the call and his expression turned somewhat serious. After hanging up, he said apologetically to Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei, "An academic project I was involved in has run into a problem, and I need to go there now to handle it."

Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei were a little disappointed, but they still expressed their understanding. Meng Jiawei joked, "You just reunited with us, and now you're going to be 'taken away' again? Hurry up and come back." After Cheng Ran left in a hurry, Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan looked at each other and smiled helplessly.

Meng Jiawei suggested a walk in the garden, and Su Xuan nodded in agreement. They strolled along the winding path when Meng Jiawei suddenly remembered something and said to Su Xuan, "You know what? When Cheng Ran and I were waiting for your meeting, we had a good talk and discovered that we had some misunderstandings about each other." Su Xuan looked at him curiously, and Meng Jiawei continued, "I always thought Cheng Ran was always so reserved because he didn't like my outgoing personality. It turns out it's because he's a bit insecure, feeling inferior to us in many ways. And me, actually, I admire Cheng Ran's composure and restraint. Many times, my seemingly impulsive behavior is just a way to cover up my inner unease."

After hearing this, Su Xuan was filled with emotion: "So there are so many hidden feelings between us. This is really a great opportunity for us to speak our minds."

As the two were talking, Cheng Ran rushed back, her face showing excitement: "It's all sorted out. The problem wasn't too serious. I was thinking on the way here that we can't let anything else interfere with our time together."

So they sat back down on the bench, and the conversation turned to their future travel plans. Meng Jiawei excitedly described the beautiful seaside scenery he imagined, while Cheng Ran carefully wrote down a list of items to prepare, and Su Xuan added various details with a smile.

The sunlight shone even brighter, bathing them in a golden glow, as if draping their friendship in a golden light. They knew that no matter what the future held, their bond would be unbreakable. They would join hands and write their own story together. The experiences, whether joyful or tearful, would become their most precious treasures, shining brightly in the long river of time.
