Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 7 The First Monthly Exam at the New School
Su Xuan sat in the classroom where she was taking her third-grade monthly exam. The desks and chairs exuded a familiar yet strange aura, a memory of school life she was touching again after being reborn. She gripped her pen tightly, her palms already damp with sweat. Her heart pounded wildly in her chest, as if trying to break free. The thumping sound echoed in her ears, making her increasingly nervous.
Recalling her past life, the humiliating failure of that monthly exam was like a nightmare, deeply etched into her mind. Back then, she was naive and ignorant, her palms sweating with nervousness in the exam hall. Looking at the questions on the test paper, they seemed like a group of ferocious, menacing little monsters roaring at her, leaving her utterly defenseless. When the results came out, the pitiful score was like an incredibly sharp blade, piercing her heart with deep pain, and her parents' disappointed eyes felt like thorns in her back. Now, fate had given her a chance to start over. She clenched her fists, silently vowing to change the outcome, but the ever-present tension just wouldn't go away.
As the exam papers were handed out, Su Xuan took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. But the sound of her inhalation pierced the almost oppressively quiet classroom, like the sounding of a battle cry. She began to scan the paper, a hint of determination in her eyes, yet her slightly trembling eyelashes betrayed her inner turmoil. Each question was no longer just simple words and numbers to her; it was a life-or-death hurdle that would determine whether she could wash away her shame and rewrite her destiny. She kept telling herself, "I must stay calm. I must do well this time; I can't repeat this mistake." But her disobedient heartbeat grew increasingly rapid, like a war drum pounding, causing her tension to rise steadily.
When answering fill-in-the-blank questions, her hand gripped the pen stiffly, writing slowly. Each word and number seemed like a small boat tossed about in a stormy sea, finally settling on the test paper with great difficulty. She tried hard to recall the knowledge points from the textbook; those once vague concepts now appeared like stars flickering in the night sky, sometimes visible, sometimes hidden. When she encountered a difficult question, her brow furrowed instantly, as if gripped tightly by an invisible hand. She felt as if the air around her had solidified, and the rustling sound of her classmates writing was like a death knell, each sound making her heart pound. She frantically searched her mind for possible solutions, like a child lost in a dark, boundless maze, fear and panic spreading through her. "I think I've seen this question before, but which page in the textbook is the relevant information?" Her brow furrowed even more, large beads of sweat rolled down her forehead, her eyes widened, staring intently at the question, not missing a single detail, her gaze filled with anxiety and helplessness. "That's it, it's on that page, I remember now!" She breathed a sigh of relief, but the tension only eased slightly, and her hands were still trembling as she wrote the answers on the test paper.
Next came the calculation problems. Her hand trembled slightly as she picked up the pen. The scratching sound of her writing on the scratch paper, listing each step, was like the snapping of branches in a storm, making her heart clench. She checked her calculations repeatedly, her eyes scanning every detail for any potential error. Each equal sign carried her earnestness and hope, as well as her fear of failure. She remembered how she had lost so many points on calculations in her past life due to carelessness; she couldn't afford to make the same mistake again. "2 + 3 equals 5, I can't make a mistake with the carry-over here. That's where I made the mistake last time," she muttered softly, her voice trembling slightly, her lips pale. Her eyes were fixed on the numbers and symbols on the scratch paper, as if they were the most precious and fragile things in the world. Her pen moved quickly across the paper, but the tension made each stroke feel like walking a tightrope, one wrong step and she would fall into the abyss of failure.
When doing reading comprehension exercises, she read the article word by word, feeling as if the words were mischievous little sprites jumping around before her eyes, making it difficult to grasp the main points. She tried hard to concentrate, attempting to immerse herself in the text, as if she were the protagonist, experiencing the joys and sorrows within. But the tension was like an invisible hand, constantly tugging at her thoughts. She searched for clues in the text, marking them lightly with her pencil, but her hand trembled slightly, as if out of control, making the marks crooked and uneven. She was like a boatman adrift on a vast ocean, searching for a glimmer of hope. When answering questions, her language was concise and clear, each sentence tightly focused on the theme, like precise keys, but her heart pounded: "Is my understanding correct? Will the teacher accept my answer?" The tension made every word feel incredibly heavy, making writing extremely difficult.
When the essay topic appeared before her, Su Xuan's lips curled into a slight smile, trying to bolster her confidence. She recalled recent moments in her life, those beautiful instants playing like slides in her mind, but her nervousness made these images somewhat blurry. She tried to let her thoughts flow freely, her pen dancing rapidly across the exam paper, but the speed seemed to mask her inner unease. The words she wrote were like leaping musical notes, playing a song of renewed striving, yet those notes were tinged with nervous tremors, weaving a seemingly wonderful yet unsettling world within the essay's lines. "I want to write down my truest feelings, to let the teacher see my progress," she silently repeated to herself as she wrote, but the constant cold sweat and trembling hands made her feel that this exam was an adventure on the edge of a cliff; one wrong step and it would be all over.
The bell rang, signaling the end of the exam. Su Xuan put down her pen and let out a long sigh of relief, but the exhaustion after the tension left her feeling weak all over. She knew that this time, she had given herself a satisfactory answer sheet. This was her first battle since her rebirth, and she had fought tenaciously against her nervousness with hard work and wisdom, hoping to rewrite the fate of this monthly exam.
