Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 62 First Day of School Cleaning
Sunlight filtered through the dappled leaves, dappling the paths of the campus. Su Xuan, filled with anticipation for the new semester and a lingering sense of languor from the holidays, stepped into the long-missed campus.
Today is the first day of school, and upbeat music is playing over the school's loudspeakers, breaking the silence that has plagued the campus for days and announcing the official start of the new semester.
As arranged by the school, everyone was required to participate in the campus cleanup. Su Xuan arrived at the classroom, put down her schoolbag, and quickly joined her classmates in the work.
The boys took the initiative to do the heavy work of mopping the floor and moving tables and chairs. Their strong arms swung the mop, leaving clean marks on the floor. The tables and chairs were easily moved and arranged neatly in their hands.
The girls carefully wiped the windows and the blackboard. Su Xuan took a damp cloth and carefully wiped away the remaining writing on the blackboard. The white powder danced in the sunlight, like a group of little elves.
She turned around and wiped the window. The stains on the glass gradually disappeared under her wiping, and the view outside the window became clearer and clearer.
On the school playground, students from other classes were also busy. Some were sweeping fallen leaves, the brooms making a rustling sound as they swept across the ground, piling the golden leaves into small hills; others were clearing weeds from the flower beds, bending over and carefully pulling the weeds up by the roots, afraid of disturbing the growing flowers.
Su Xuan wiped the sweat from her forehead and looked at the classroom, which was gradually becoming cleaner and brighter, and a sense of accomplishment welled up in her heart.
Although the students were a little tired during the process, they were filled with laughter and joy, sharing their summer vacation experiences and discussing their plans for the new semester. The teacher also provided guidance, offering encouragement and praise from time to time.
As the spring cleaning drew to a close, the campus was transformed. Classrooms were neatly arranged with desks and chairs, and the windows were bright and clean, as if welcoming the new semester with open arms. The playground was lush with green grass, and the running track was spotless, awaiting students to run and play freely. Su Xuan and her classmates returned to their seats, feeling a little tired, but their eyes were filled with anticipation and enthusiasm for the new semester.
Just when everyone thought the cleaning was almost done, a scream suddenly came from the corner. The students rushed over and saw the mischievous Xiaoming standing in front of an old box, his face showing a mixture of fear and excitement. It turned out that while moving the box to clean the dust behind it, he had discovered a little hedgehog trapped between the box and the wall.
This little hedgehog was covered in sharp spines, curled up into a small spiky ball, with only two small, black eyes showing, watching the surrounding crowd warily.
The students immediately erupted in excitement. A few of the bolder boys wanted to get closer to observe, but were too scared to touch the hedgehog because of its sharp spines. The girls chattered amongst themselves, some saying how cute the hedgehog was, while others worried that it might hurt them.
Su Xuan had a sudden inspiration and suggested finding a cardboard box, carefully moving the little hedgehog inside, and placing it in the hallway outside the classroom for now. They would figure out a proper place for it after cleaning. So everyone got busy again, cleaning while frequently checking on the little hedgehog.
After the cleaning was finally finished, the homeroom teacher learned about the little hedgehog and said with a smile, "This is a 'special guest' for the new semester."
The teacher organized a discussion among the students about what to do with the little hedgehog. Some suggested putting it in the school garden, where there were many flowers and plants for it to hide in; others suggested contacting a nearby animal rescue center so that professionals could take care of it.
Just as everyone was having a heated discussion, the biology class representative stood up and said that the little hedgehog might have wandered in by mistake because the campus environment had improved and there was more food available, which also showed that the school's ecology was getting better and better.
He also gave a detailed introduction to the hedgehog's living habits and eating habits, which the students listened to with great interest.
Finally, everyone decided to find a safe corner in the garden for the little hedgehog, put some water and fruit there, and let it "settle down" on campus for the time being.
Many funny things happened during the process of settling the little hedgehog. Several classmates searched all over the garden for a suitable "home" for the hedgehog, and some of them accidentally got their clothes caught on tree branches, while others almost fell into puddles, which made everyone laugh.
Once everything was settled, the school bell rang. The students, filled with concern for the little hedgehog and anticipation for the new semester, entered their classrooms.
This first day of school became exceptionally memorable because of the unexpected appearance of the little hedgehog. Su Xuan was also secretly looking forward to what other interesting things awaited everyone in the new semester.
Upon hearing the tale of the little hedgehog, Cheng Ran and Meng Jiawei's curiosity was piqued, and they rushed to the garden as soon as get out of class ended. There, they saw the little hedgehog quietly curled up in a corner. Excitedly, Cheng Ran leaned closer to get a better look, but accidentally tripped over a branch and fell forward, nearly crushing the hedgehog. This startled the classmates nearby, who gasped in surprise. Meng Jiawei, meanwhile, laughed heartily, teasing, "Cheng Ran, are you going to give the little hedgehog a close hug?!"
Cheng Ran got up, her face flushed, and playfully punched Meng Jiawei in feigned anger. Afterwards, the two of them joined the "Little Hedgehog Guardian Group."
Cheng Ran volunteered to design a more comfortable home for the little hedgehog. He brought some wooden boards and old fabric from home and devoted himself to tinkering in his spare time. Meng Jiawei was responsible for handing Cheng Ran tools, but he was always clumsy, either knocking out nails or tearing the fabric crooked, which led to another round of laughter and playful antics between the two.
Once, they wanted to give the little hedgehog a bath, thinking it would make it cleaner and cuter. So, they carefully put the little hedgehog into a small basin of water, but the little hedgehog didn't seem to appreciate it and kept struggling in the water, splashing water and wetting Cheng Ran and Meng Jiawei's clothes.
After finally finishing their bath, when they were drying the little hedgehog with a towel, the hedgehog's quills got caught on the towel again, and they couldn't pull it off no matter what they did. The two of them were so anxious that they were covered in sweat. In the end, they were able to solve the problem with the help of other classmates.
When the little hedgehog went missing, Cheng Ran and Meng Jiawei were more anxious than anyone else. They searched along the school wall several times, calling out the little hedgehog's name as they searched, their earnest expressions making it seem as if the little hedgehog could understand their calls.
Meng Jiawei even climbed the wall to look outside the school, but accidentally tore his clothes. Cheng Ran below laughed so hard he couldn't stand up straight, but there was a hint of worry in his laughter.
After the little hedgehog left, Cheng Ran and Meng Jiawei channeled their enthusiasm for the hedgehog into environmental protection activities. Cheng Ran used her artistic talent to create a series of beautiful environmental protection posters, which were then displayed in various corners of the campus.
Meng Jiawei organized an environmental knowledge competition, and together with Cheng Ran, they mobilized their classmates to participate, creating an environmental protection craze on campus. Although the little hedgehog was no longer there, they gained friendship and growth in the process, making campus life more colorful.
