Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 49 Returning from Illness
Cheng Ran returned to school after recovering from his illness, sunlight shining on his slightly pale face. As soon as he stepped into the school gate, a familiar figure under the old sycamore tree warmed his heart—it was Su Xuan.
Not far away, Meng Jiawei was also watching him, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
Su Xuan held Cheng Ran's notes from the class in her hand, her eyes fixed on the direction of the school gate, her gaze filled with anticipation and worry.
The moment she saw Cheng Ran, her eyes lit up, shining like stars in the night sky. A smile appeared on her lips, revealing two deep dimples, and her joy was as radiant as a blooming flower.
She walked briskly towards Cheng Ran, a gentle breeze ruffling her hair, a few strands dancing around her cheeks, carrying a faint floral fragrance that lingered around Cheng Ran.
"Cheng Ran!" Su Xuan's voice trembled slightly, filled with the excitement of a long-awaited reunion. "You're finally back! You don't know how much the school felt without you these past few days."
Cheng Ran looked at Su Xuan, his eyes filled with emotion. He grinned, revealing his white teeth. "Yes, I'm back, Su Xuan. I've been so bored these past few days, I really missed school."
Just then, Meng Jiawei walked over and patted Cheng Ran on the shoulder. "Hey, brother, are you all better now? Everyone's been thinking about you." His tone seemed warm, but his eyes darted between Cheng Ran and Su Xuan for a moment.
Su Xuan handed him the notebook, gently patted it with her other hand, and said, "This is what I organized for you. You missed a lot of material because you were sick. Look, I wrote down every single point in detail, and I also found extra examples from several reference books. Those colored sticky notes are the important ones, so it will be much easier for you to review them."
As she spoke, she flipped through her notebook, showing Cheng Ran the carefully marked content. The handwriting in the notebook was neat and beautiful, and each line was like a work of art that had been carefully crafted.
Cheng Ran took the notebook, gently stroking it. He could feel the warmth of Su Xuan on the paper, as if he could see Su Xuan diligently writing and organizing under the lamp. "Su Xuan, thank you. How much time did this take you?"
"It's okay, as long as you can catch up with the lessons quickly. By the way, how are you feeling now? Have you fully recovered?" Su Xuan frowned slightly, her eyes full of concern. She looked Cheng Ran up and down, as if checking a precious treasure for any flaws.
"I'm much better now. Look at me, I'm full of energy!" Cheng Ran said, jumping up and down a couple of times to show off her vitality.
Meng Jiawei pursed his lips and said, "You should really thank Su Xuan. She stayed up a lot of nights for your notes."
The two walked side by side to the classroom, with Su Xuan chattering about the interesting things that happened at school along the way.
As they passed the playground, Su Xuan pointed to the track, her eyes sparkling with memories. "When you weren't here, running laps in PE class felt like something was missing. You used to run so fast, like the wind. Every time you ran in front, your back looked so cool, and the students behind you would shout that they wanted to catch up with you. You have no idea how fun that scene was."
Cheng Ran responded with a smile, the image of everyone running together on the playground flashing through his mind, "Haha, once I've fully recovered, I'll run with everyone again, and it'll definitely be a lively scene."
Meng Jiawei followed behind, shouting loudly, "Let's have a race then and see who's faster!"
As Cheng Ran entered the classroom, her classmates crowded around her, bombarding her with questions about her condition. Su Xuan stood to the side, a relieved smile on her face, her eyes never leaving Cheng Ran. Her gaze reflected both her joy at Cheng Ran's recovery and her satisfaction with the friendship between classmates.
The school bell rang, and Cheng Ran returned to his seat. The moment he opened his bag, he found a small box inside containing homemade cookies from Su Xuan, along with a note: "Welcome back. I hope you're healthy and happy every day." Cheng Ran turned to look at Su Xuan, who winked and playfully made a "shh" gesture, signaling him to focus on the lesson. That day, Cheng Ran felt that everything on campus was full of life, thanks to the company of Su Xuan, Meng Jiawei, and his classmates.
After class, Meng Jiawei approached Cheng Ran and said seemingly casually, "Su Xuan is really good to you. You're a lucky guy."
Cheng Ran smiled but didn't speak. He knew Meng Jiawei's words had a hidden meaning. Meng Jiawei then lowered his voice, "But you'd better not let her down, or I won't let you off the hook." Cheng Ran looked at him helplessly, "What are you talking about? We're just friends."
Su Xuan, who was watching them from the side, walked over and asked, "What are you talking about? You're being so mysterious." Meng Jiawei chuckled, "Nothing, just saying that your notes are amazing, Cheng Ran has to repay you properly." Su Xuan rolled her eyes at him, "You're so good at talking nonsense. I'm helping Cheng Ran voluntarily."
During lunch break, Cheng Ran was reviewing his notes in the library when Su Xuan arrived and sat next to him. Just as they were studying quietly, Meng Jiawei ran over with a basketball, "Cheng Ran, come on, let's go play basketball, don't just stay here all the time."
Cheng Ran hesitated, wanting to spend more time catching up on his studies. Su Xuan said from the side, "Go ahead, you're feeling better now, and some exercise is good for you. You can review your studies later." Cheng Ran thought for a moment, then got up and left with Meng Jiawei.
On the court, Meng Jiawei passed the ball to Cheng Ran while saying, "Do you like Su Xuan? I think she treats you quite differently."
Cheng Ran missed the ball, and it rolled quite a distance. He paused for a moment, then said, "No, we're just classmates and friends. Don't make wild guesses."
Meng Jiawei ran over to retrieve the ball, and when he came back, he patted Cheng Ran on the shoulder, "No matter what you think, if you hurt her, I'll never forgive you." Cheng Ran looked at Meng Jiawei's serious expression and felt a little uncomfortable.
After afternoon classes, Cheng Ran and Su Xuan were on duty together. Only the two of them were in the classroom, and the atmosphere was somewhat awkward. Cheng Ran swept the floor, and Su Xuan wiped the blackboard. Suddenly, Cheng Ran broke the silence, "Su Xuan, thank you for the cookies today, they were delicious."
Su Xuan smiled, "I'm glad you like it. I was so worried when you were sick, I was just thinking of making you something nice to eat when you came back." Cheng Ran looked at Su Xuan, a warm feeling welling up in his heart. Just then, Meng Jiawei suddenly appeared at the classroom door. Seeing this scene, his eyes dimmed, and he turned and left. Cheng Ran and Su Xuan were both a little embarrassed, unaware that a small youthful storm was quietly spreading.
Cheng Ran and Su Xuan exchanged a glance, then put down their brooms and chased after them. In the corridor, Cheng Ran called out to Meng Jiawei, "Jiawei, what's wrong? Don't misunderstand, we were just chatting."
Meng Jiawei stopped but didn't turn around. "I didn't misunderstand. I just suddenly remembered I have something to do, so I'll leave now." His tone was a little stiff as he hurried away.
Su Xuan walked over, looking at Meng Jiawei's departing figure with some worry. "He seemed unhappy. Did we make him angry?"
Cheng Ran frowned. "Perhaps the atmosphere we just had caused him to misunderstand. I'll find some time to explain it to him."
In the following days, Meng Jiawei intentionally or unintentionally avoided Cheng Ran and Su Xuan.
Cheng Ran felt this couldn't go on, so during a break between classes, he pulled Meng Jiawei to a corner of the playground. "Jiawei, we're brothers. Don't distance yourself from me because of what happened before. Su Xuan and I really have nothing going on, and even if we did, it wouldn't affect our friendship."
Meng Jiawei was silent for a moment. "I know I might be a little sensitive, but I just don't want to see Su Xuan get hurt. She's a good girl." Cheng Ran smiled. "I understand. I don't want her to get hurt either."
Su Xuan also noticed the strangeness between the two. She approached Meng Jiawei and said, "Jiawei, what's wrong with you lately? You and Cheng Ran seem to be acting strangely. The three of us have always been good friends, and I don't want our friendship to be ruined by some inexplicable thing."
Looking into Su Xuan's sincere eyes, Meng Jiawei scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly, "I know, I was being too petty. I will make up with Cheng Ran."
During a class activity, Meng Jiawei volunteered to team up with Cheng Ran. Together, they completed the task. During the activity, they smiled at each other, their previous awkwardness gradually dissipating in their laughter. Su Xuan, watching them from the side, also smiled happily.
The youthful stories on campus continue, their friendship has become even stronger after this minor setback, and the relationship between Cheng Ran, Su Xuan, and Meng Jiawei has become more subtle and precious.
