Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 43 Being followed
That evening, Su Xuan finished her evening self-study session as usual and walked home alone with her schoolbag on her back. The dim yellow light of the streetlights cast her long shadow on the street, and the surrounding silence was somewhat unsettling.
At first, Su Xuan didn't notice anything unusual. But as she walked, she vaguely felt that there were light footsteps following her at a leisurely pace.
She glanced back instinctively, but apart from a few passersby at a distance, there was nothing particularly suspicious on the street. Su Xuan thought she might be overthinking things, so she quickened her pace and continued walking home.
However, she hadn't gone far when the footsteps seemed to reappear, and the rhythm was almost identical to her quickened pace.
Su Xuan's heart skipped a beat. She turned around again and saw a person wearing a black hoodie not far behind her. The brim of the hood was pulled down so she couldn't see the face. The person was walking slowly with their hands in their pockets.
Su Xuan's heart suddenly raced, and a feeling of unease welled up inside her.
She continued walking forward, feigning composure, while keeping a constant watchful eye on her back. The person in the black hoodie seemed to sense Su Xuan's wariness and slowed their pace slightly, but still maintained a safe distance from her.
Su Xuan tried to calm herself down and think of a solution. She thought of calling her parents to come pick her up, but she was afraid that it might just be her imagination, and her parents would make a wasted trip and worry.
Just as she hesitated, the street grew increasingly dark because several of the streetlights in that section had broken for some reason.
Su Xuan's palms were sweaty, and she felt her breathing become rapid. She decided to turn into a nearby alley to see if the person would still follow her. If they did, then there was definitely something wrong.
Su Xuan quickly turned into the alley and ran forward as fast as she could in the dim light. But she hadn't run far when she heard hurried footsteps behind her. Clearly, the person in the black hoodie had also turned into the alley.
Su Xuan was both shocked and frightened. As she ran, she prayed in her heart that she could get out of the alley as soon as possible, or that she could meet someone she could ask for help.
Just when she was almost in despair, a convenience store with its lights on suddenly appeared in front of her.
Like someone grasping at a straw, Su Xuan ran towards the convenience store with all her might. She rushed inside, panting heavily, startling the clerk. Without bothering to explain, Su Xuan hurriedly ran to the window and looked outside.
The person in the black hoodie stopped at the alley entrance, seemed to hesitate for a moment, and then turned and slowly walked away.
Su Xuan finally breathed a sigh of relief, her legs went weak, and she almost collapsed to the ground. A shop assistant came over and asked her what was wrong. Su Xuan briefly explained what had happened, and the shop assistant comforted her and suggested that she have her family come and pick her up later.
Su Xuan nodded gratefully, took out her phone and called her parents. While waiting for them, her heart was still pounding, and she was still shaken by the terrifying moment.
After rushing into the alley, Su Xuan's heart was pounding in her chest, but her strong will to survive forced her to calm down quickly and think of a way to get rid of her pursuers.
As she ran, she kept an eye on her surroundings. Suddenly, she noticed that the entrance to an old residential building ahead was half-open. Without thinking, Su Xuan rushed over, gently pushed open the door, slipped inside, and carefully closed it behind her, trying not to make a sound.
She hid behind the door, barely daring to breathe, straining her ears to listen to the sounds outside. Soon, she heard the hurried footsteps of her pursuer echoing through the alley, growing ever closer.
Su Xuan covered her mouth tightly, afraid that making a sound would reveal her location.
The stalker stopped near the building entrance, seemingly looking around for her.
Su Xuan trembled with nervousness, silently praying that he would leave quickly. Just then, she noticed a string of wire balls hanging on the wall beside her, likely dropped by a resident of the building. A thought struck her; she gently picked up the wire balls and threw them forcefully upstairs.
The wire ball landed with a crisp sound, particularly jarring in the quiet stairwell. The stalker was clearly attracted by the sound; assuming Su Xuan had run upstairs, he immediately gave chase, his footsteps fading into the distance.
Su Xuan didn't dare to delay. After waiting a few seconds to confirm that the follower had gone upstairs, she gently opened the unit door, peeked out to observe, and seeing that there was no one in the alley for the time being, she quickly came out of the unit door and ran in the opposite direction from the follower.
After running for a while, she found a small courtyard ahead, filled with miscellaneous items. Su Xuan seized the opportunity, crouched down, and quickly slipped into the courtyard, hiding behind a tall pile of discarded cardboard boxes.
She had just hidden herself when she heard footsteps behind her again, and Su Xuan's heart jumped into her throat.
She peered through the gaps in the cardboard box and saw that the stalker had returned and was searching the alley.
Su Xuan tried to calm her breathing and make as little noise as possible. Suddenly, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket; it was her mother calling.
Su Xuan was startled. She hurriedly and frantically put her phone on silent, afraid that the ringtone would give her away.
Just then, a stray cat suddenly darted out from a corner of the yard and meowed. The pursuer's attention was immediately drawn to it, and he walked towards the stray cat.
Su Xuan seized the opportunity and slipped out from behind the cardboard box the moment the stalker turned around. She then ran towards the exit of the alley as fast as she could.
Finally, she ran out of the alley and onto a bustling main street. People were coming and going, and Su Xuan mingled in the crowd, walking quickly while occasionally glancing back to make sure her pursuer wasn't following.
Only after confirming that she was completely out of danger did Su Xuan breathe a sigh of relief. Her legs went weak, and she almost collapsed to the ground. She quickly found a safe place to stop, called her parents to let them know she was safe, and then waited for her aunt to come and pick her up.
Not long after, my aunt arrived in a hurry.
Seeing that Su Xuan was safe and sound, her aunt finally breathed a sigh of relief. She rushed forward and hugged her tightly, her voice trembling as she said, "I was so worried about you. I'm so glad you're alright. I'm so glad you're alright."
Su Xuan leaned against her aunt's chest, and her tense nerves finally relaxed completely. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she said with a hint of grievance, "Auntie, I was really scared just now."
Her aunt gently patted her back and comforted her, "Don't be afraid, it's all over now. Aunt is here with you."
Aunt brought Su Xuan home, where Uncle was already anxiously waiting at the door. As soon as they saw Su Xuan, they surrounded her, offering a barrage of concerned questions and comforting words.
That night, Su Xuan lay in bed, her body extremely exhausted, but the image of that person in the black hoodie kept flashing through her mind, and she couldn't fall asleep no matter what.
The moment she closes her eyes, the fear of being followed washes over her like a tidal wave, causing her heart to clench again.
The next day, Su Xuan forced herself to go to school.
During the break, she told a few close classmates about what happened the night before, and they all looked surprised and worried.
Everyone comforted her and even offered to walk home together after evening self-study sessions, which warmed Su Xuan's heart and made her appreciate the preciousness of friendship among her classmates.
From then on, Su Xuan was always extra careful when walking at night, and she was always accompanied by family or classmates.
That stalking incident became an unforgettable experience for her, constantly reminding her to pay attention to her own safety.
As time went by, the fear gradually faded, but Su Xuan became stronger and more independent as a result.
She knew that life could present unexpected dangers, and only by remaining vigilant, relying on the support of those around her, and using her own wisdom and courage could she better cope. Whenever she recalled that night, she was grateful that she had finally managed to escape her stalker, and thankful to everyone who had offered her help and care during her ordeal.
This experience has become a special mark on her path of growth, inspiring her to bravely face the future.
