Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 37 Happy New Year!!
In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, Su Xuan was filled with anticipation. She imagined her family sitting together, laughing and chatting, sharing the joy of reunion.
Perhaps she's looking forward to that sumptuous New Year's Eve dinner, a table laden with delicious dishes, their enticing aromas filling the air. She might also be looking forward to wearing new clothes, welcoming the new year with a fresh look.
The streets outside the window gradually became lively, red lanterns were hung high, and the festive atmosphere grew stronger. All of this filled Su Xuan with anticipation for the upcoming New Year.
Unfortunately, Su Xuan's expectations were dashed.
Her parents couldn't come home for the New Year. This news chilled her heart like a winter wind. She looked out the window at the brightly lit streets, but the festive atmosphere now seemed jarring.
She recalled the joyful times she had spent with her parents during the Lunar New Year in previous years, and a sense of indescribable loss welled up inside her. Without her parents' company, this New Year was destined to be somewhat lonely.
However, life must go on, and Su Xuan can only try to find her own warmth and happiness in this unusual New Year.
Although Su Xuan felt disappointed that her parents couldn't come home for the Lunar New Year, she didn't wallow in sadness. She started preparing gifts for her friends in advance. Su Xuan carefully selected each gift, imagining the surprised and delighted expressions on her friends' faces when they received them.
She might choose a wonderful book for a friend who loves reading, or prepare a favorite record for a friend who loves music. She incorporates her blessings and care for her friends into these gifts, hoping to share warmth and joy with them during this special New Year.
While preparing gifts, Su Xuan gradually found some comfort. She knew that even though her parents were not by her side, she still had a group of close friends to accompany her through the New Year.
Su Xuan carefully wrapped each gift, tying each bow with extra care. She took these gifts, brimming with love, and went door-to-door delivering them to her friends.
When her friends received the gifts, their eyes sparkled with emotion and surprise, and they warmly embraced Su Xuan. Surrounded by her friends, Su Xuan temporarily forgot the regret of her parents' absence. Everyone decided to prepare a special New Year's Eve party together, and each person busied themselves with their assigned tasks. Su Xuan was in charge of decorating the venue; she hung up ribbons and balloons, filling the room with a festive atmosphere.
On New Year's Eve, Su Xuan sat alone under the warm lamplight, a faint loneliness permeating the air around her.
While talking to Chen Yanzhu, Su Xuan heard bursts of cheerful laughter and the clattering of mahjong tiles coming from the other end of the line.
Chen Yanzhu excitedly described to Su Xuan the amusing stories of her relatives playing mahjong, who had won a big hand, and who was watching anxiously from the sidelines. Su Xuan listened with a smile, as if she could see the lively scene, the whole family sitting around the mahjong table, enjoying themselves immensely.
Chen Yanzhu also specially mentioned that she had saved a special snack for Su Xuan, which she would mail to her after the New Year. It was a niche snack that only the two of them liked, which warmed Su Xuan's heart.
When I spoke with Chen Cheng, he was in his own courtyard, surrounded by the sounds of fireworks. Chen Cheng excitedly recounted how he and his brother carefully set off the fireworks, how they bloomed into colorful flowers in the night sky, some streaking across the sky like shooting stars, others blossoming like layers of flowers.
As he spoke, he called out to his younger brother to come and greet Su Xuan as well. His brother's innocent voice came through the microphone, wishing Su Xuan a Happy New Year. Su Xuan listened, tears welling up in her eyes, moved by this pure blessing.
Rong Yixin's phone call was filled with a warm family atmosphere, with the songs and dance music from the Spring Festival Gala playing in the background on TV.
Rong Yixin told Su Xuan that there were several new dishes for the family's New Year's Eve dinner this year, which her grandmother specially learned to make in preparation for the New Year.
She meticulously described the appearance and taste of each dish, from the colorful and fragrant braised carp, symbolizing abundance year after year, to the sweet and soft eight-treasure rice, representing family reunion and happiness. As Su Xuan listened, the image of Rong Yixin's family sitting together enjoying the food flashed through her mind, and she was filled with envy.
You Siqi's voice was always full of energy as she eagerly shared the New Year's gifts she had received with Su Xuan. There was a beautiful notebook with delicate gold foil patterns and fine paper; there was an adorable plush toy, the soft touch of which seemed to be transmitted through the phone; and there was a set of beautiful paintbrushes, which she couldn't wait to use to create beautiful paintings.
Every time You Siqi mentioned a gift, she would marvel at the thoughtfulness of her family. Su Xuan was genuinely happy for her. They also chatted about what they would draw if they were to paint together, whether it would be dazzling fireworks or a reunited family.
Finally, I spoke with Dong Haoying. She was in the kitchen making dumplings with her family. She had her phone aside, and I could hear their laughter and the sounds of rolling out dough and filling dumplings.
As Dong Haoying made dumplings, she chatted with Su Xuan, each dumpling containing a different blessing: health, happiness, and wealth. She also wished Su Xuan all the best in the new year and looked forward to making dumplings together again next time they met.
Su Xuan could imagine those plump dumplings being made in everyone's hands, carrying the beautiful expectations for the new year. She whispered "Happy New Year" into the phone, hoping that Dong Haoying and his family would be happy.
After hanging up the phone, Su Xuan sat quietly by the window, watching the dazzling fireworks bloom and disappear in the night sky.
Just before midnight, Meng Jiawei called. Su Xuan looked at the name flashing on the screen, a wave of warmth and anticipation washing over her.
"Xuan'er, Happy New Year!" Meng Jiawei's energetic voice came through the receiver, carrying his unique enthusiasm and dispelling the lingering loneliness in Su Xuan's heart.
Su Xuan could hear some noise on the other end of the phone, including children playing, firecrackers, and the prelude to the New Year's bells in the distance.
Meng Jiawei excitedly told Su Xuan about the lively scene at his home, where the elders were busy preparing for the New Year's ceremony in the courtyard.
They hung red lanterns high, which swayed gently in the night breeze, radiating a festive glow.
The table was filled with various offerings, each carrying a beautiful wish for the New Year. The rising smoke filled the air with a mysterious and solemn atmosphere.
He also told Su Xuan that he and his brothers had just set off a particularly long string of firecrackers. The crackling sound was deafening, and the firecrackers exploded into brilliant sparks in the night sky, scattering like shooting stars across the darkness.
The younger brothers laughed and shouted amidst the sound of firecrackers, their little faces flushed red, their eyes filled with excitement and anticipation for the New Year.
"Xuan, do you know? When I was setting off firecrackers, I was thinking, if only you were here, we could run together, scream together, just like when we were kids." Meng Jiawei's words carried a hint of regret, but were also full of longing for the past.
As Su Xuan listened, childhood memories of playing with Meng Jiawei surfaced in her mind. Back then, they would always wander through the streets and alleys together during the Chinese New Year, holding sparklers and drawing bright circles, carefree and with laughter filling every corner.
Meng Jiawei continued, saying that there's a special family tradition when the clock strikes midnight: elders give red envelopes to younger family members, each with a golden "福" (fortune) character on it, symbolizing abundant blessings. He laughed and said he was ready to show off his skills and grab as many red envelopes as possible.
"Oh, right, I also have a surprise for you. You'll find out when we meet after the New Year. It's definitely something you'll like," Meng Jiawei said mysteriously. Su Xuan pressed for details, but he wouldn't reveal it. The two of them guessed and laughed on the phone.
As midnight approached, both ends of the phone fell silent, seemingly waiting for the New Year's bells to ring. When the melodious and solemn chimes echoed from all directions, and fireworks simultaneously burst across the night sky, Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan shouted into the phone at the same time, "Happy New Year!"
In this moment where fireworks light up the sky and festive bells ring out, their friendship, like the dazzling New Year scene, is eternal and precious, transcending distance and warming each other's hearts.
