Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 30 An Unexpected Encounter
Su Xuan stood at the connecting point between the train carriages, gazing at the scenery rushing past the window, tears still welling in her eyes. The scene of parting with Meng Jiawei at the train station replayed in her mind like a movie; every glance, every word, caused her immense heartache. She thought that this farewell might be the last time they would see each other, perhaps because some people, once missed, are gone forever.
Just then, she heard familiar footsteps behind her. Su Xuan thought it was her imagination, but the sound grew closer, and then a slightly surprised voice rang in her ear: "Su Xuan?" She turned around abruptly, and what came into view was Meng Jiawei's familiar yet somewhat tired face. At that moment, time seemed to stand still, and Su Xuan's eyes widened, her face filled with disbelief.
Meng Jiawei looked at Su Xuan, his eyes gleaming with excitement. He said breathlessly, "I thought... I bought the wrong ticket and got on the wrong train, but I never expected... to meet you here." Su Xuan's lips trembled slightly, and it took her a while to find her voice: "Me too, this is unbelievable." The two smiled at each other, but tears welled up in their eyes at the same time.
Passengers came and went around them, but they seemed to be in a world where only they existed. Meng Jiawei gently took Su Xuan's hand, and the warm touch gradually calmed Su Xuan's heart. They walked to their respective seats, sharing the little episodes and their reluctance to part after their separation. The train sped along the tracks, and their hearts drew closer and closer in this wonderful reunion. The sadness of parting at the train station was slowly diluted by the joy of reunion, replaced by anticipation for accompanying each other on the unknown journey ahead.
Su Xuan's eyes widened, filled with surprise and curiosity. After pulling Meng Jiawei to sit down by the window, she asked impatiently, "How did you end up on this train?" Meng Jiawei scratched his head, a shy smile on his face, and replied, "I hadn't noticed before. After we parted ways at the train station, I looked at the tickets carefully while waiting for the train and realized that the places we're going to are all under the jurisdiction of Dazhou. We just hadn't talked about the specific districts and counties of our hometown. I didn't expect it to be such a coincidence."
Su Xuan covered her mouth, her eyes sparkling with surprise: "Really? We're from the same hometown! I never knew before." Meng Jiawei smiled and nodded: "Yes, maybe it's fate. I didn't realize it when we were in school, but I found out at this moment of separation and reunion."
Su Xuan looked out the window, sunlight streaming onto her face, illuminating her smiling eyes: "It seems this journey won't be so lonely. I was sad about parting with you, but now we can walk together for a while longer." Meng Jiawei looked at Su Xuan, his gaze softening yet firm: "Yes, no matter what, this is a kind of luck. We can see the scenery of our hometown together, even if we're from different districts and counties, there must be similar beauty in them."
As the train continued its journey, their conversation gradually shifted from this serendipitous encounter to hazy yet cherished memories of their hometown. Each memory shone like a bright star in their hearts, illuminating this surprising and delightful journey.
As the train clattered along, Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei felt increasingly relaxed.
They decided to play a number guessing game. Su Xuan thought of a number and asked Meng Jiawei to guess it. Meng Jiawei's first guess was far off, so Su Xuan playfully gave him a hint, "This number is smaller than your guess, and it has nothing to do with the train's speed." The surrounding passengers were amused and some couldn't help but offer Meng Jiawei suggestions. Amidst the laughter, Meng Jiawei finally guessed the number correctly. He pretended to be annoyed and said, "I should have guessed this from the beginning! You misled me!" Su Xuan stuck her tongue out at him.
Later, a snack cart passed by. Meng Jiawei ran to buy two buckets of instant noodles. When he came back, he imitated a common sales pitch on trains, "Come on, beautiful lady, this is a special instant noodle for this train. You won't get one if you miss it." Su Xuan was amused by his comical appearance and laughed so hard she almost fell over. When she took the instant noodles, she didn't forget to play along, "Then I must try this special delicacy."
As the train passed through a tunnel, darkness enveloped the carriage. Someone started singing a classic old song. Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei joined in, their voices echoing in the darkness, connecting everyone's hearts. When the train emerged from the tunnel and light returned, they saw the joy radiating from each other's faces, as if the train had transformed into a moving castle of happiness.
Later, a child was playing with a toy car in the aisle and accidentally let it roll under their seats. Meng Jiawei helped pick up the toy car and even played a chasing game with the child. Su Xuan watched them from the side, constantly smiling and cheering the child on. The whole carriage was filled with a joyful atmosphere.
The train swayed rhythmically as Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei sat facing each other and began to chat about interesting things from their respective hometowns.
Su Xuan laughed and said, "There's an old pond where we live. In the summer, the lotus leaves are so dense and beautiful. Once, my friends and I secretly picked lotus leaves to use as umbrellas, but the owner found out and chased us for a long time. We were laughing as we ran. Thinking about it now, it was so silly and cute." Meng Jiawei listened, the scene flashing through his mind, and he couldn't stop laughing.
Meng Jiawei also got excited: "The Spring Festival in my hometown is so lively. Dragon dance teams parade through the streets and alleys. One year I really wanted to touch the dragon, so I got very close. As a result, the dragon dancer accidentally swept me with the dragon's tail, and I fell on my bottom. Everyone around me laughed so hard, and I couldn't help but laugh too." Su Xuan covered her stomach, laughing so hard that tears were almost coming out.
They chatted more and more enthusiastically, attracting the attention of other passengers who listened to their stories. Su Xuan talked about the markets in her hometown, filled with a dazzling array of snacks, including sugar paintings that seemed like magic to the craftsmen. Meng Jiawei described the wild fruits in the mountains of his hometown and the happy times he and his friends spent searching for them. Laughter echoed in the carriage, filling the journey with warmth and joy. They felt closer to each other, as if these stories had led them into each other's memories of their hometowns.
The train came to a stop, and Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei followed the flow of people out of Dazhou Station. The area outside the station was bustling with activity, and familiar local accents and the air carrying the scent of their hometown greeted them.
“Looks like we all have to go to the bus station to catch a bus,” Su Xuan said to Meng Jiawei. Meng Jiawei smiled and nodded, “Yes, let’s go together.” They dragged their luggage and walked towards the bus station.
On the way, they saw a street vendor selling their childhood favorite roasted chestnuts, steaming hot. Meng Jiawei ran over and bought a bag, handing it to Su Xuan: "Try it, is it still the same taste as before?" Su Xuan peeled one and put it in her mouth; it was sweet and soft. "Mmm, still the same old taste."
Upon arriving at the bus station, they found it bustling with people. After a struggle to find a place to queue, they shared their anticipation of returning home. Meng Jiawei, looking at the bus schedule, said, "I hope our buses come soon. I really want to see how things have changed back home." Su Xuan, equally eager, said, "Yes, everything feels so wonderful coming back, especially with you." The noisy surroundings seemed unable to dampen their spirits; both their hearts were filled with joy at the prospect of returning home.
They stood quietly in line, surrounded by the noise of people and announcements.
Su Xuan gently nudged Meng Jiawei and said with a smile, "What do you think our family's reaction will be when they see us? I can already imagine my parents' surprised and happy expressions. They might even prepare a huge feast." Meng Jiawei also smiled, "My parents will definitely be very surprised too. They might even pull me aside and ask me all sorts of questions, like how I've been doing outside."
After a while, Meng Jiawei looked at Su Xuan's suitcase and said, "What local specialties did you bring back? I didn't prepare much, just some trinkets from around the school." Su Xuan blinked and said, "I brought some local snacks from near our school, but I ate quite a bit of them. I hope my family won't mind. Oh, and I also brought warm scarves for my grandparents."
Su Xuan remembered something and looked up at Meng Jiawei, asking, "Do you remember the fireworks we used to watch during Chinese New Year when we were kids? They were so colorful and beautiful. I wonder if there will be any this year?" Meng Jiawei's eyes revealed a hint of nostalgia. "Of course there will be. We can set off fireworks together again, just like when we were kids, and make wishes under the fireworks." They were immersed in the beautiful memories of celebrating Chinese New Year in their hometown, eagerly anticipating the upcoming reunion.
