Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 25: Deciding to Have a Serious Talk
Su Xuan stood under the camphor tree on campus, dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves and falling on her, but she had no heart to appreciate it. The note she clutched tightly in her hand was slightly damp with sweat; it contained Meng Jiawei's phone number. She knew those numbers by heart, but had never had the courage to dial them. They hadn't spent much time together in a long time, and that sense of estrangement left Su Xuan feeling empty, as if she had lost her most precious treasure.
They used to be so close, sharing snacks during breaks, chasing and playing on the playground; their laughter still seems to echo in her ears. But from some point on, it was as if an invisible veil separated them, and they drifted further and further apart. Su Xuan knew that if things continued like this, they might never be able to go back.
Thinking of this, she took a deep breath, took out her phone, and dialed the number with trembling fingers. The moment the call connected, Su Xuan's heart jumped into her throat. "Hello?" Meng Jiawei's voice came through, still so familiar, yet seemingly carrying a hint of unfamiliar indifference.
"Jiawei, it's me, Su Xuan. Can we meet and talk?" Su Xuan tried her best to keep her voice steady, but she couldn't hide her nervousness.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, then Meng Jiawei replied calmly, "Okay, see you at the usual place."
The usual spot was a small park near the school, a place filled with many memories for them. Su Xuan arrived at the park early and sat on the bench where they used to sit together. The flowers around her were still in full bloom, colorful and vibrant, but Su Xuan had no heart to appreciate them. She kept rubbing her hands together, her eyes fixed on the park entrance, every passing figure making her heart race.
Finally, Meng Jiawei appeared. He was wearing a simple gray T-shirt and black sweatpants, his hands in his pockets, as he slowly walked over. Su Xuan looked at him, her eyes slightly red.
“It’s been so long since we’ve sat together like this,” Su Xuan said softly.
Meng Jiawei looked away, nodded slightly, and said nothing.
Su Xuan bit her lip and continued, "Jiawei, I feel like we've become so estranged. If we don't have a good talk today, the next time we meet might be at our junior high graduation ceremony. There will be so many people there, and we might just have to say hello quickly. After that, we'll go to different high schools, and we might only be able to meet online. That feeling... I really don't want it to be like that."
Meng Jiawei's eyes flickered slightly. He was silent for a moment, then slowly said, "We are all growing up, and many things have changed."
"But our friendship shouldn't change!" Su Xuan said, somewhat agitated. "We've been through so much together, how can it just change like this? Did I do something wrong to upset you?"
Meng Jiawei sighed and turned to look at Su Xuan. "It's not your problem. I'm just a little confused. I've had some family issues lately, and I'm feeling very complicated. I didn't know how to talk to you about it, so I chose to run away."
Su Xuan felt a slight pang in her heart. She grasped Meng Jiawei's hand and said, "Whatever's wrong, you can tell me. Haven't we always relied on each other?"
Meng Jiawei felt the warmth of Su Xuan's hand, and a long-lost smile appeared on his lips. "I'm sorry, it was my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you away."
Su Xuan smiled, tears welling in her eyes, "It's okay, as long as we can still have a good chat like this, there's nothing we can't get through."
A gentle breeze stirred, and the flowers swayed softly, as if they too were happy for their reconciliation. They sat on a bench and began to share their innermost thoughts, just as they had done countless times before, the barrier between them gradually dissolving in their sincere conversation.
Su Xuan's eyes burned with a mixture of anger and resentment. She strode up to Meng Jiawei and blocked his path. "Meng Jiawei, you stop right there!" Her voice trembled slightly, yet was incredibly firm.
Meng Jiawei's body stiffened abruptly. He slowly raised his head, looking at Su Xuan's flushed face, a hint of panic flashing in his eyes. "Su Xuan... I..." He tried to explain, but didn't know where to begin.
"Why? Why did you suddenly stop playing with me? Weren't we doing so well before?" Su Xuan's eyes reddened, tears welling up in them. She bit her lower lip tightly to keep the tears from falling.
The air around them seemed to freeze, and Meng Jiawei felt his heart almost stop beating. He dared not look directly into Su Xuan's questioning gaze, his eyes darting away to the ground beside him. There was a small pebble there, which he kicked lightly with his foot, trying to ease his inner tension.
After a long silence, Meng Jiawei took a deep breath, as if summoning immense courage. "I... I've been wanting to tell you something." His voice was low and hesitant.
Su Xuan frowned slightly, her eyes full of doubt. "What did you say? Tell me!"
Meng Jiawei's lips trembled slightly. He remained silent for a while before slowly saying, "I... I've realized my feelings for you have changed. Every time I see you, my heart races, and I get very nervous. I don't want to just be friends with you anymore." His face flushed slightly, as if saying these words had taken all his strength.
Su Xuan was stunned; she hadn't expected this reason. "You... what are you saying?"
Meng Jiawei looked up at Su Xuan, a hint of pain in his eyes. "I like you, and this feeling is growing stronger. But I'm scared. I'm afraid that if I show my feelings, we won't even be able to be friends anymore. I don't want to lose you, even if it's just as a friend."
Su Xuan felt a mix of emotions, unsure how to respond. "So you're choosing not to play with me? Do you think that will solve the problem?"
Meng Jiawei lowered her head. "I really don't know what to do. Every time I'm with you, those complicated emotions well up inside me. I'm afraid I won't be able to help but blurt out what's on my mind and then mess everything up."
"You're so foolish!" Su Xuan finally couldn't hold back her tears. "How could you give up on our friendship because of this uncertainty and worry? We can face this change together!"
Meng Jiawei's eyes also welled up with tears. "I'm afraid you'll hate me, that you'll feel I've ruined our relationship. I don't want my feelings to cause you any trouble."
"But what you're doing now is really bothering me!" Su Xuan said, choking back tears. "We could have been doing so well, but you've suddenly become so distant from me. Have you even thought about how I feel?"
The wind blew around them, ruffling their hair, but it couldn't dispel the complex and tangled emotions between them. Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan stared at each other, their eyes filled with pain and confusion. They were both heartbroken over this uncertain relationship and the friendship they had almost lost.
Suddenly, Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu appeared before Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei as if they had sprung from underground. Dong Haoying, dressed in a cool denim outfit, walked with a confident stride. Beneath her black baseball cap, her eyes gleamed with curiosity and excitement, a mischievous smile playing on her lips, seemingly quite intrigued by the awkward yet dramatic scene before her. Chen Yanzhu, on the other hand, wore an elegant dress. She took light, quick steps, her hair swaying slightly with each step, her face revealing undisguised surprise.
Dong Haoying spoke first, his voice tinged with a hint of teasing: "Oh ho, what's going on here? Why are you gazing at each other so affectionately?" As he spoke, he raised an eyebrow at Meng Jiawei, his eyes full of mockery.
Chen Yanzhu gently tugged at Dong Haoying's sleeve and whispered, "Don't be like that. It feels like they're talking about something very important." Her gaze shifted between Su Xuan and Meng Jiawei, a hint of worry in her eyes, as if she was afraid their sudden appearance would ruin something.
Su Xuan was taken aback by the sudden appearance of the two people. She hurriedly wiped away her tears, a hint of embarrassment and anger flashing in her eyes. "What are you doing here?" Her voice was hoarse, still trembling with sobs.
Meng Jiawei seemed to have been abruptly pulled out of a world that was just the two of them. He frowned, a hint of displeasure in his eyes as he looked at Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu. "It's none of your business. You can leave." His tone was somewhat stiff, as he just wanted to quickly return to the heartfelt atmosphere he had just shared with Su Xuan.
Dong Haoying persisted, taking a few steps forward to approach Meng Jiawei. He patted Meng Jiawei on the shoulder and lowered his voice, saying, "Brother, we saw everything. If you have any troubles, feel free to tell us. Maybe we can help." Although his eyes still held a hint of teasing, there was also a touch of sincerity.
Chen Yanzhu stepped forward and stood next to Su Xuan, handing her a tissue and saying gently, "Su Xuan, if you want to cry, just cry. We're here. No matter what happened between you two, we're still friends." She gently held Su Xuan's hand, trying to offer her some comfort.
Su Xuan took the tissue, glanced gratefully at Chen Yanzhu, but shook her head. "No need, this is between us, you wouldn't understand." Her gaze returned to Meng Jiawei, a hint of helplessness in her eyes. The atmosphere she had just painstakingly built up had been disrupted by the sudden appearance of these two, and she didn't know how to continue her conversation with Meng Jiawei.
Meng Jiawei looked at Su Xuan, then at Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu, and felt a surge of irritation. He didn't know how to deal with the situation, and just hoped that the two of them would leave quickly so that he and Su Xuan could clear up what was on their minds.
The appearance of Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu was like two pebbles thrown into a calm lake, having a multifaceted and complex impact on the relationship between Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan.
From the perspective of breaking the atmosphere, Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan were immersed in an emotionally complex situation, at a crucial moment of revealing their true feelings and questioning each other. Dong Haoying's teasing words, such as "Oh ho, what's going on here? Why are you gazing at each other so affectionately?" instantly shattered this solemn and private atmosphere. Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan seemed to be abruptly pulled from their own world, their newly accumulated emotions instantly dissipated, and both were somewhat at a loss. The complex emotions conveyed in their previous eye contact also experienced a brief break.
From an emotional development perspective, this interruption hindered their potentially deeper communication. Su Xuan had been preparing to discuss the issues arising from Meng Jiawei's special feelings for her, but the sudden appearance of the two disrupted their progress. Her initial mix of anger, helplessness, and a touch of heartache towards Meng Jiawei was replaced by embarrassment and shame. Meng Jiawei's hard-won confession and explanation to Su Xuan was also forced to a halt. His dissatisfaction with Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu was palpable, as their presence made him worry that Su Xuan would become even more withdrawn, thus jeopardizing a potential opportunity to grow closer.
In terms of outward expression, their relationship became somewhat delicate in front of Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu. Dong Haoying's teasing attitude and behavior made Meng Jiawei feel as if he had been stripped naked and displayed in public, making him more cautious in handling his relationship with Su Xuan. Su Xuan, on the other hand, felt more embarrassed in front of Chen Yanzhu, having just argued and shed tears with Meng Jiawei. Having such private emotions witnessed by others made her somewhat restrained in Meng Jiawei's presence. While Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu's concern was well-intentioned, it also added a layer of apprehension to Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan in handling their relationship. They had to consider the two women's views on their relationship and the potential impact, making its future even more unpredictable.
After the brief chaos caused by Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu's appearance, Su Xuan took a deep breath and broke the deadlock. She looked at Meng Jiawei, the shame and indignation in her eyes gradually fading, replaced by a hint of determination.
“We shouldn’t stop just because they’re here.” Su Xuan’s voice wasn’t loud, but it was clearly audible in the slightly awkward atmosphere. Meng Jiawei was slightly taken aback, then a spark of hope ignited in his eyes.
He took a step forward, getting closer to Su Xuan, ignoring Dong Haoying's curious and inquisitive gaze and Chen Yanzhu's gentle yet worried eyes. "Su Xuan, I really don't want to lose you because of my stupidity, whether as a friend or... in some other more important capacity." Meng Jiawei's voice trembled slightly, every word filled with sincere emotion.
Su Xuan's lips curled up slightly, tears welling in her eyes, but this time they were tears of emotion. "I don't want to lose you either. We can't let those unfounded worries ruin our relationship." She reached out and gently took Meng Jiawei's hand, just as naturally as they had done countless times before, only this time the handshake was more solemn and cherished.
Seeing this, Dong Haoying's playful expression vanished, replaced by a relieved smile. He knew the bond between the two was so deep that it couldn't be easily broken. He patted Meng Jiawei on the shoulder and said cheerfully, "Brother, cherish it, don't do anything foolish again."
Chen Yanzhu stepped forward, her eyes shining with emotion. She gently hugged Su Xuan and whispered in her ear, "I'm so glad you two were able to resolve this; this is true friendship." Su Xuan hugged Chen Yanzhu back and nodded with a smile.
Meng Jiawei looked at Su Xuan, his eyes filled with love and relief. "No matter what difficulties we face in the future, no matter what others say, I will never leave you again." Su Xuan replied with a smile, "We will face them together, and no one can separate us."
At this moment, the sunlight seemed to shine even brighter, bathing them in its glow, as if cheering for their reconciliation. The surrounding air also became warm and sweet. Dong Haoying and Chen Yanzhu witnessed this beautiful moment. They knew that after this ordeal, Meng Jiawei and Su Xuan's relationship would be even stronger, like steel tempered by fire, their bond would withstand any storm.
