Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 182 Anger Outside the Ward and Conflict at Home
The ICU ward door was tightly closed, like an impenetrable barrier, completely shutting out the chaos and noise of the outside world. Inside, there was only a deathly silence, so quiet that you could hear the slightest sound of air moving. The stark white light poured down without reservation, like a merciless probe, shining directly on Su Xuan's lifeless face.
She lay quietly on the hospital bed, like a wax figure stripped of its soul, lifeless. The oxygen mask, like an invisible net of confinement, covered most of her face, revealing only her skin, which looked as if it had been repeatedly assaulted by frost. It was almost transparently white, without a trace of blood, like a lake frozen for a long time in winter, so deathly still that it sent chills down one's spine and a sense of despair arose spontaneously.
The surrounding medical equipment flashed with a cold, piercing light, like signals from another icy world. The monotonous, heart-wrenching ticking sound was amplified infinitely in this almost suffocating silence, each tick like a heavy hammer blow striking the heart.
The sound was like the tolling of a clock on a countdown to fate, each strike precisely gripping the hearts of everyone present. It seemed to be using its last strength, its feeble rhythm to pull at Su Xuan's life, which teetered like a candle in the wind, on the verge of extinction. She was trapped in the dark abyss of unconsciousness, her body tightly enveloped by thick, inky darkness, completely unaware of the turbulent waves raging outside, like a lonely island forgotten by time and the world, utterly alone and helpless.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the hospital corridor, hurried and rapid footsteps approached from afar, the "tap-tap" sound echoing back and forth in the empty and long corridor, weaving a rhythm full of urgency and anger.
Dong Haoying and Meng Jiawei, their faces contorted with rage, appeared particularly heavy in the dim light, as if burdened by endless anger and resentment. They moved with hurried steps, like two black lightning bolts carrying raging fury, charging straight towards Cheng Ran with unwavering momentum.
Dong Haoying's eyes widened like copper bells, burning with a raging fire that seemed to possess the power to devour everything, as if it could instantly ignite the surrounding air, turning it into a scorching sea of fire. His chest heaved violently, each breath heavy and labored, as if suppressing a super volcano about to erupt, as if the pent-up anger would burst forth at any moment.
The anger and discontent emanating from his eyes were like countless sharp blades, capable of tearing a person to pieces. Meng Jiawei clenched his fists tightly, his knuckles turning sickly pale from excessive force. He exuded a chilling aura, like a giant volcano about to erupt, silently accumulating and suppressing endless energy. Just standing there, one could feel the overwhelming and terrifying power of his presence.
"Cheng Ran, what the hell are you doing!" Dong Haoying was the first to lose control of his pent-up anger, shouting at the top of his lungs. His voice trembled slightly with rage, tinged with an undeniable hoarseness, like the furious roar of a raging lion, making the surrounding air tremble slightly. "Su Xuan is lying there, her life hanging in the balance, and your wife is still pulling those shady tricks behind her back!"
Cheng Ran's brows furrowed deeply, his expression a complex mix of panic and helplessness flashing across his face. He was about to speak in his defense when Meng Jiawei, like a chilling, piercing arrow, coldly interrupted him: "Don't try to make excuses for yourself. So what if you and Su Xuan are divorced? Nianci is your biological daughter. That blood is thicker than water, an ironclad rule that no one can change. Just for Nianci's sake, you need to keep a close eye on your current partner. You absolutely cannot let her bully Su Xuan so recklessly and wantonly!"
Cheng Ran's lips parted slightly, attempting to speak, but his throat felt as if it had been sanded, dry and painful, and he couldn't utter a single word. His eyes were bloodshot, filled with deep helplessness and exhaustion, as if he were being suffocated by the burdens of life.
Seeing Cheng Ran's seemingly innocent expression, Dong Haoying's anger flared even more fiercely, the veins on his temples throbbing. He took a large step forward, his entire demeanor menacing, his index finger pointing directly at Cheng Ran, the tip almost touching the other's nose, and shouted, "Say something! Don't play innocent here. You think you haven't heard a thing about your wife's shameful affairs? Don't try to fool me!"
Meng Jiawei stood to the side, coldly snorting, his arms crossed over his chest, exuding an aura of unapproachability. He spoke slowly but deliberately, each word like a knife: "Cheng Ran, if you don't give us a satisfactory explanation today, this won't be so easily forgotten. Su Xuan is still in the ICU, her life hanging in the balance, teetering on the brink of death. And you, you let your current wife stir up trouble outside. Don't you forget, you are Nianci's father, and you were once husband and wife with Su Xuan. Search your conscience; don't you feel any remorse?"
Cheng Ran sighed heavily, his voice filled with bitterness and helplessness. He spoke slowly, his voice low and hoarse: "I know in my heart that I have been trying to find a way to deal with this, but she... she is too stubborn and won't listen to reason. She won't listen to my advice at all."
"You won't listen to advice? Are you really that spineless? You can't even control your own wife!" Dong Haoying was instantly enraged, angrily interrupting Cheng Ran, her eyes reddening with emotion. "Don't you know how much Su Xuan has sacrificed for you? Now she's suffering in a hospital bed, and you're letting her suffer like this, how can you bear it!"
Cheng Ran's face turned deathly pale in an instant, devoid of any color. He slowly lowered his head, gripping his hair tightly with both hands, as if trying to vent all the pain in his heart. His voice trembled with anguish: "I didn't want this either. I've argued with her countless times, but she doesn't take it seriously at all. She even said that Su Xuan brought it on herself."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jiawei's eyes flashed with undisguised disgust, his brows furrowing into a tight knot. He spat out, "She brought this on herself? How could she say such heartless things? Su Xuan is almost dead, and she can still be so cold-blooded!"
Just then, Cheng Ran's phone rang abruptly, its shrill ringtone particularly jarring in the tense atmosphere. He instinctively pulled out his phone and glanced at it; his already grim expression instantly darkened, like the sky before a storm.
Dong Haoying and Meng Jiawei exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with doubt and wariness, as if they sensed something bad was about to happen. Cheng Ran hesitated for a moment before pressing the answer button.
In an instant, a sharp and shrewish female voice came from the other end of the phone, like a blade slicing through the air: "Where the hell have you been? Get back here right now, the house is a complete mess!" Cheng Ran's hand holding the phone trembled slightly uncontrollably. He looked up at the two angry-looking people in front of him and said in a low voice, "I'm at the hospital, something urgent has come up and I can't leave."
"The hospital? You went to see that bitch again? I'm warning you, if you dare to have anything to do with her again, I'll never forgive you!" The voice on the other end of the phone became increasingly shrill and high-pitched, almost bursting through the phone's receiver, making people's eardrums ache.
Dong Haoying and Meng Jiawei both heard it clearly. Dong Haoying could no longer hold back. She snatched the phone from Cheng Ran's hand and shouted angrily into the other end of the line, "Watch your mouth! Su Xuan is on the verge of death, struggling between life and death, and you're spouting nonsense here. Do you have any humanity at all?!"
There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone, followed by a piercing sneer: "Who do you think you are? Who gave you the right to tell me what to do? Cheng Ran, if you don't get back here right now, I'll smash everything in the house!" With that, he slammed the phone down.
Cheng Ran looked utterly dejected, like a punctured balloon. Her legs gave way, and she slumped weakly into a chair, covering her face with her hands. She seemed to have lost all her strength, muttering to herself repeatedly, "What should I do... what should I do..."
Looking at Cheng Ran, who was slumped in his chair as if he had lost his soul, Dong Haoying felt a surge of contempt and pity for him, though the burning anger in her heart had not completely subsided. Suddenly, he kicked the stool beside him with a loud crash, the sound echoing jarringly in the otherwise empty and desolate corridor, as if tearing a hole in the oppressive atmosphere.
"Look at yourself now, such a pathetic and useless person! When you and Su Xuan walked down the aisle, you weren't this timid and irresponsible!" Dong Haoying shouted angrily, her voice full of disappointment and frustration.
Seeing this, Meng Jiawei slowly squatted down to meet Cheng Ran's gaze. His tone softened slightly compared to before, but his words still carried an undeniable firmness: "At this point, simply running away won't solve anything. You must make a tough decision: whether you intend to continue to indulge your current partner's reckless behavior, or to stand up for Su Xuan and seek justice, while also carefully considering Nianci's future."
Cheng Ran slowly raised his head, wiping his face vigorously with both hands, as if trying to wipe away all his weariness and confusion. A resolute glint flashed in his eyes, as if he had finally made up his mind: "I know in my heart that I really can't continue living like this in a daze. I'm going back now and will speak frankly with her. Whether she agrees or not, I will make her stop these utterly absurd behaviors."
“I hope you can keep your word.” Meng Jiawei said as he stood up and gently patted Cheng Ran’s shoulder. “If she is still stubborn and refuses to give up, don’t worry, we will definitely not sit idly by. Su Xuan is our best friend, how can we just stand by and watch her be bullied?”
Cheng Ran took a deep breath, as if gathering all his strength, then stood up and carefully straightened his clothes, the action seeming to cheer himself on. "I'm going back now. I have to get this matter completely resolved today, no matter what." As soon as he finished speaking, he strode resolutely towards the elevator.
Dong Haoying and Meng Jiawei watched Cheng Ran's retreating figure, their hearts filled with complex emotions, a mixture of feelings that were difficult to describe. "Can he really handle this matter smoothly?" Dong Haoying couldn't help but ask, a hint of worry in her eyes.
"I hope so." Meng Jiawei frowned, his expression grave. "However, it's better to be safe than sorry, so we still need to prepare in advance. I'll contact a lawyer right away to see if we can provide Su Xuan with some practical and effective protection from a legal perspective."
“Okay, I’ll go ask Su Xuan’s attending physician to see if there have been any new changes in her condition recently.” After Dong Haoying finished speaking, the two hurriedly walked in completely different directions, each busy with their own affairs concerning Su Xuan.
When Cheng Ran returned home, he pushed open the door and was greeted by a chaotic and devastated scene. Things were scattered everywhere, a complete mess, as if a fierce fight had just taken place.
His current wife sat on the sofa, her face contorted with anger, glaring at him fiercely. "So you know how to come back?" she yelled, her voice sharp as fingernails scratching a blackboard, sending chills down his spine.
Cheng Ran took a deep breath, trying to calm her agitated emotions and make her tone sound gentler: "Let's talk this out calmly."
"What are you going to talk about? How exactly did you get entangled with that bitch and remain in this mess?" She stood up abruptly, hands on her hips, striking an arrogant pose, her eyes filled with resentment and dissatisfaction.
"Enough!" Cheng Ran suddenly raised his voice, his tone filled with unprecedented authority and anger. "Su Xuan is still lying in the hospital, her life hanging in the balance, struggling on the brink of death, and you're here making trouble and causing a ruckus. Don't you have any compassion or humanity?"
"Compassion? When she took you away from me, did she never consider my feelings at all!" She instantly lost control of her emotions, shouting hysterically, her face contorted and ferocious, as if she were completely blinded by hatred.
“We’re divorced now. All the grudges and resentments of the past are in the past. Let them all drift away with the wind. My only hope now is that you can let go of your malice and resentment towards Su Xuan. She is Nianci’s biological mother. For Nianci’s sake, we can’t treat her like this anymore.” Cheng Ran tried her best to suppress her anger and keep her tone calm and sincere.
"Hmph, why should I listen to you? Unless you completely sever all ties with her and never visit her in the hospital again!" Not only did she not back down, but she went even further, proposing even more demanding conditions, her eyes revealing a ruthless determination to achieve her goal.
Cheng Ran gazed silently at the woman before him, who had become so unfamiliar and so stubborn, and a sudden, indescribable sorrow welled up within him. He knew perfectly well that this negotiation was destined to be anything but smooth sailing, and the road ahead would be fraught with thorns and obstacles. But he had already made up his mind that no matter how many difficulties and obstacles he would encounter, no matter how arduous the struggle would be, he would fight for a fair and just outcome for Su Xuan and Nian Ci.
