Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 17 is happening again.
On the first day of school, sunlight, like golden threads, filtered through the dappled leaves, scattering shimmering fragments of gold on the ground. A gentle breeze, like a tender hand, caressed the campus of Yuanzhou Middle School, making the flowers sway gracefully like a group of joyful dancers, and filling the air with a fragrance of freshness and hope. Su Xuan, filled with trepidation and loneliness, felt as if she were in a vast fog, each step slow and heavy as she stepped through the unfamiliar school gates. The unfamiliar faces around her surged like a tide, making her feel like a lone boat adrift on a vast ocean, lost and helpless.
Meng Jiawei, wearing his signature baseball cap, stood quietly under the shade of a tall sycamore tree. Dappled sunlight danced on him, mirroring his excited and expectant mood. Beneath the brim, his eyes shone like stars in the night sky, radiating a mysterious and thrilling light. He was like a loyal watchman, standing in a prominent spot, his gaze fixed on the school gate, not wanting to miss a single figure that might be Su Xuan.
When Su Xuan appeared in his sight, Meng Jiawei's heart burst open like a firework. His smile, as bright as sunlight piercing through the clouds, dispelled all gloom. His white teeth gleamed in the sunlight, each one seeming to whisper of his inner joy. He waved his arms vigorously, the movements so exaggerated it seemed he wanted to transmit all his enthusiasm to Su Xuan. He shouted at the top of his lungs, "Su Xuan, we're here!" His booming voice, like a resounding bell, echoed through the bustling crowd, reverberating in every corner of the campus, startling several birds in the trees. They fluttered their wings and flew into the sky, seemingly infected by this enthusiasm.
The voice, like a sharp bolt of lightning, struck directly into Su Xuan's somewhat gloomy world. Her heart skipped a beat, and the confusion in her eyes was instantly replaced by surprise. Her heart, adrift like a lone boat, seemed to have suddenly found a harbor, a place to rely on. The gloom that had shrouded her heart began to dissipate in that instant, like snow meeting the warm sun, turning into glistening droplets that slid down her cheeks. The corners of her mouth involuntarily turned up, like a flower blooming in a gentle breeze, and her steps became lighter, each step feeling like walking on soft clouds, heading towards that source of warmth.
Dong Haoying stood by the flowerbed, its blossoms a riot of colors—fiery red, rosy pink, and snow-white—complementing his radiant smile. His laughter was as hearty as ever, like a clear mountain stream, echoing in the air and mingling with the rustling of the flowers in the breeze, creating a beautiful melody. He held a carefully crafted welcome sign, inscribed with "Welcome Su Xuan" in colorful ink, surrounded by drawings of their shared memories—the beach, the tents from their elementary school graduation trip, and scenes of them around a campfire. He held the sign high, waving it constantly, making it stand out in the sunlight, as if afraid Su Xuan wouldn't see it. Su Xuan's gaze fell on the sign, and memories flooded back, the fog that had clouded her heart beginning to dissipate. A smile unconsciously crept onto her lips, and her steps became lighter.
Chen Yanzhu, Chen Cheng, Rong Yixin, and You Siqi were also there. Chen Yanzhu and Chen Cheng held a bouquet of flowers, standing by the school fountain. The water spraying from the fountain formed tiny rainbows under the sunlight, dreamlike and enchanting. The bouquet of flowers was colorful, vibrant, and fragrant. Each flower represented their longing for and welcome to Su Xuan, with glistening water droplets clinging to the petals, as if they too were moved by this reunion. Su Xuan looked at the bouquet and felt a warm current flowing through her heart—the warmth of being remembered by her friends—completely relaxing her previously tense mood. Rong Yixin held up a painting she had drawn for Su Xuan. In the painting, Su Xuan wore a beautiful dress and stood among them, everyone's face beaming with happiness. She stood on a path in the schoolyard, the lush green grass beside it like a soft carpet spread across the earth. With delicate strokes, she depicted their deep friendship, the painting so lifelike it seemed to recreate that beautiful time. You Siqi, like a cheerful little elf, skipped and hopped across the sun-drenched school square to Su Xuan's side, embracing her tightly. Her silvery laughter rang in Su Xuan's ears: "Sister Su Xuan, we've finally waited for you!" Tears of excitement glistened in her eyes, tears of joy at the reunion, sparkling like stars in the sunlight. The moment Su Xuan was embraced by You Siqi, tears also welled up in her eyes—tears of happiness. She hugged You Siqi back tightly, her heart overflowing with emotion.
As if by prior arrangement, they waited for Su Xuan there. At that moment, Su Xuan froze, then joy welled up like a burst dam, and tears of surprise glistened in her eyes. It turned out they hadn't separated after all; a new story would unfold at Yuanzhou Middle School.
Filled with tension and anticipation, like a group of young soldiers about to learn their fate, they rushed towards the class assignment list with hurried yet somewhat heavy steps. Each person's brow was slightly furrowed, their eyes filled with anxiety, and their lips unconsciously pursed. The scene resembled a group of treasure hunters rushing towards a map containing clues to their loot; the surrounding air seemed to grow heavy, as if shrouded in an invisible pressure. Each person's heartbeat quickened with each step, the thumping sound particularly clear in their chest, like the beating of war drums.
Meng Jiawei felt his heart pounding in his chest. He silently prayed, "I must stay in the same class as everyone, especially Su Xuan. If only I could continue to be in the same class with her." A hint of unease appeared in his eyes, his hands unconsciously clenched and unclenched, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
However, as their eyes eagerly searched the class assignment list, the harsh reality, like a bucket of icy water, mercilessly extinguished the flames of expectation in their hearts. They weren't all assigned to the same class. This news cast a heavy shadow over their hearts, instantly turning their faces ashen. Some trembled slightly, their eyes filled with disappointment; others stood frozen in place, their gazes vacant, as if their souls had been ripped away.
However, Su Xuan, Dong Haoying, and Rong Yixin still managed to find each other among the densely packed names, and the three of them were assigned to the same class. In that instant, Su Xuan's previously dim eyes seemed to be lit up, shining brightly again, the light in them seemingly able to dispel all gloom. Her lips curled into a radiant smile, a smile like sunlight breaking through the clouds, warm and dazzling. She clenched her fist excitedly, her body trembling slightly, unable to contain her joy. Dong Haoying was initially stunned, then his face blossomed into a smile as bright as a blooming flower, almost reaching his ears. He clapped his hands excitedly, the loud "clap" breaking the quiet atmosphere, the cheerful laughter echoing in the air. His eyes sparkled with joy, like the most brilliant star in the night sky, or like a child who had received the most precious gift in the world, his face filled with excitement and exhilaration. Rong Yixin gently grasped Su Xuan and Dong Haoying's arms, her eyes suddenly brightening, sparkling like a clear spring. A happy smile spread across her face, sweet and warm, like a flower blooming in spring. She tilted her head slightly, her eyes filled with anticipation for her new class life, as if she could already see the fun-filled days to come.
When Meng Jiawei saw on the class assignment list that he and Su Xuan were not in the same class, his world seemed to fall silent instantly, and the surrounding noise gradually faded away. He was stunned at first, his eyes wide open, filled with disbelief, as if the class assignment result before him was an unsolvable puzzle. His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but it was as if something was blocking his throat, and he could not utter a sound.
Immediately afterwards, a deep sense of loss washed over him like a tidal wave. His shoulders slumped slightly, and his once straight back bent, as if an invisible burden had been placed upon him. His eyes became dull and lifeless, like bright stars suddenly obscured by dark clouds. The expectation and excitement that had once sparkled in his eyes vanished without a trace, replaced by endless loneliness.
His heart felt like it was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand, throbbing with pain. Memories of his time with Su Xuan kept flashing through his mind—the laughter during breaks, the afternoons spent discussing difficult problems, and Su Xuan's radiant smile on their graduation trip. How he wished he could continue sharing joy and sorrow with her in his new class, but now, that wish had shattered like a bubble.
His brows were furrowed tightly, forming a deep "川" (river) shape between them—an outward manifestation of his inner pain and helplessness. His hands clenched unconsciously into fists, his nails digging deep into his palms, yet he felt no pain, for the inner anguish far surpassed physical sensation. He stood there blankly before the class assignment list, classmates coming and going around him, yet he felt as if he were in another time and space, enveloped by loneliness and sorrow.
Meng Jiawei walked dejectedly towards the tuition payment line, his steps dragging, each one feeling like he was wearing heavy shackles. His head was bowed, his eyes fixed on the ground; the cheerful laughter of his classmates seemed like the sounds of another world, completely irrelevant to him. He clutched the payment slip tightly in his hand, the paper crumpled, mirroring the turmoil and pain in his heart.
Su Xuan, Dong Haoying, and Rong Yixin chatted excitedly as they walked towards another line to pay tuition. Su Xuan's face beamed with a happy smile, her eyes sparkling with anticipation for her new class. She walked briskly, her ponytail swinging behind her. Dong Haoying, as always, was carefree, constantly talking about the fun things that might happen in the new class. His steps were energetic, as if he couldn't wait to begin his new school life. Rong Yixin smiled gently beside them, occasionally chiming in with a few words. Her eyes were bright, and even the way she held the payment slip was so light and graceful.
The two lines heading in different directions seem to symbolize the different paths they are about to take in their campus life, filled with anticipation, disappointment, laughter, and sorrow, all intertwined in the process of paying tuition.
