Rebirth: Illuminating a Brilliant Life
Chapter 101 A Turmoil Arises from a Busy Case, Love Rebuilt Through Understanding
After the New Year, the two of them returned to Beijing. Su Xuan and Cheng Ran, carrying the warmth and longing for their hometown, stepped back into the hustle and bustle of this prosperous city.
Upon returning to her Beijing residence, Su Xuan immediately began unpacking, taking out all the local specialties she had brought from her hometown. Cheng Ran helped her along, and the two chatted and laughed, as if they had brought back the sweetness and warmth of the New Year with them.
"Su Xuan, look at this bag of your favorite hometown pastries. We can save them and enjoy them slowly." Cheng Ran smiled as he placed the pastries on the table.
“Okay, every time I eat this, it reminds me of the taste of home,” Su Xuan replied, her eyes full of happiness.
In the days that followed, they resumed their usual work routine. Cheng Ran would get up early every day to prepare breakfast, and then the two of them would go to work together. On the crowded subway, Cheng Ran would always hold Su Xuan tightly, afraid that she would be pushed around by the crowd.
After get off work, they sometimes go to the market together to buy groceries. When they get home, Cheng Ran is in charge of washing and chopping the vegetables, while Su Xuan cooks the meal. Although the meals are simple, they are full of the taste of home.
On weekends, they visit various attractions in Beijing. They might stroll among the red walls and yellow tiles of the Forbidden City, feeling the weight of history; or enjoy the tranquility of nature amidst the lakes and mountains of the Summer Palace. At each location, they take photos to commemorate their beautiful moments.
Once, they went to see a romantic movie. In the darkened theater, Cheng Ran gently held Su Xuan's hand, their hearts seemingly rising and falling with the plot. After the movie, they walked home hand in hand, talking about the touching scenes, their hearts drawing even closer.
However, life isn't always smooth sailing. Cheng Ran encountered a major project at work, which suddenly increased his pressure, often causing him to work late into the night. Su Xuan saw this and felt sorry for him. Every day, she would prepare a nutritious late-night snack for Cheng Ran when he came home.
"Cheng Ran, don't overwork yourself. Your health is the most important thing," Su Xuan said with concern.
"I know, darling, with you by my side, I feel that everything is worthwhile," Cheng Ran replied with a weary smile.
However, this peaceful tranquility was fleeting, ruthlessly shattered by the sudden pressure of work. Cheng Ran took on an extremely challenging and stressful case, and from then on, he seemed to be dragged into a rapidly spinning and never-ending vortex by a powerful force.
Day and night, he confined himself to his desk, facing the cold computer screen, sitting for long stretches of more than ten hours at a time. Under this intense work rhythm, his care and companionship for Su Xuan naturally became sparse and rare, like a beach after the tide has receded, leaving only endless desolation and loneliness.
One evening, filled with anticipation and love, Su Xuan meticulously prepared a sumptuous dinner in the kitchen. She carefully arranged the tableware, dimmed the lights, and tried to create a warm and romantic atmosphere, then waited happily for Cheng Ran to return home.
Time passed quietly, the heat of the food gradually dissipated until it was cold, and Cheng Ran dragged his heavy and tired body into the house.
"Why are you so late? The food I prepared with such care is already cold." Su Xuan could no longer suppress her grievances and disappointment, and her complaints were filled with longing and dissatisfaction for Cheng Ran.
“I’m busy with work. You know perfectly well that this case is of great significance to me.” Cheng Ran frowned, her voice unconsciously tinged with a hint of irritation from exhaustion.
“Work is important, but does that mean you can completely disregard your health? With you leaving early and returning late every day, what communication and warmth can we possibly have between us?” Su Xuan’s voice suddenly rose, and her emotions became increasingly agitated.
"Why can't you be a little more understanding of me? If this case fails, all my previous hard work and effort will be in vain." Cheng Ran was also blinded by anger and shouted back.
Startled by the sudden shout, Su Xuan trembled slightly, tears welling up in her eyes, her voice trembling with sobs: "I was just worried about your health, and you treat me like this." With that, she turned and rushed into the bedroom, the door slamming shut with a loud bang, as if separating their hearts into two different worlds.
Cheng Ran stood frozen, his gaze fixed blankly on the closed bedroom door, a wave of regret washing over him. He knew that Su Xuan's complaints stemmed from deep affection for him, but the immense pressure of the case had caused him to lose his reason and self-control in that moment.
In the days that followed, the two seemed to be shrouded in an invisible frost, falling into a cold and stifling cold war. Su Xuan was no longer as cheerful and intimate with Cheng Ran as before, and Cheng Ran was also too busy with the complicated matters of the case to spare any energy to soothe Su Xuan's wounded heart and resolve the conflict between them.
One day, Su Xuan finished a long day at work and dragged her tired body home. As soon as she stepped inside, she saw Cheng Ran bustling about in the kitchen. The dining table was laden with her favorite dishes, their colors enticing and their aromas irresistible, while a bouquet of vibrant flowers sat quietly nearby. Hearing the door open, Cheng Ran turned around, her gaze meeting Su Xuan's. A blush of embarrassment rose on her face as she slowly walked towards her.
"Su Xuan, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have lost my temper with you so impulsively. I know in my heart that everything you did was for my sake. This case is nearing its end, and I will definitely adjust myself from now on and not let work affect our lives anymore." Cheng Ran's eyes were full of sincere apology and remorse.
Looking into Cheng Ran's eyes, which were filled with weariness yet revealed utmost sincerity, Su Xuan's resentment dissipated considerably. She sighed softly and said gently, "I also have my faults. I should have given you more understanding and support, and been more considerate of the difficulties and pressures you face at work."
As they finished speaking, their eyes both reddened slightly. They slowly drew closer and embraced tightly. Tears streamed down their faces at that moment, as if trying to wash away all the misunderstandings and pain from before.
This minor incident, caused by work pressure, was like a sudden storm. Although it briefly disrupted the peaceful harbor of their love, it also made them realize more deeply the importance of cherishing each other after the storm. They truly understood that in the long journey of love, understanding and tolerance are like bright stars, illuminating each other's path forward, indispensable and invaluable.
