The anti-Qing movement began with the looting of the Eight-Nation Alliance.
Chapter 30 Sir, times have changed
After an unknown amount of time, Shen Lian felt his arms were sore and weak, and he could no longer hear the sound of arrows being shot.
"Stop! Cease fire! Stop fire now!"
Hearing Shen Lian's shout, everyone finally stopped firing.
"Check your weapons and ammunition, and report how many bullets you have left!"
"Young Master, I have eight shots left. I have twelve shots... I... I only have three shots left!" The last voice was Shen Xiaohu's.
"You spendthrifts! Can't you be a little more frugal! These bullets cost a tael of silver each, every shot costs money!" Shen Lian cursed. Of course, he wouldn't mention that he himself only had ten bullets left.
Unexpectedly, after just one battle, each person's fifty rounds of ammunition were almost used up. Even the landlords wouldn't dare use them like that!
"Distribute the bullets evenly. Is anyone injured?" Seeing that no one spoke, Shen Lian breathed a sigh of relief. He stood up and prepared to go out to check.
"Young Master, let me go!" A man stepped forward. His name was Shen Dong, and he was also a servant of the Shen family. He was usually quiet, and Shen Lian rarely paid attention to him.
Seeing the young man's composed demeanor, Shen Lian nodded. "Be careful!"
Shen Dong went out to observe for a while and returned; "Young Master, I think I've driven the bandits away!"
"Alright! We'll all go out and check it out, keep a close watch. Tan Ya, you guys stay here for now."
Shen Lian led his men out of the cabin, and it was indeed very quiet outside, indicating that the robbers had already left.
"Lu Da, how are you?" Lu Da was struggling to sit up from under the ship's railing, an arrow stuck in his thigh.
"It's nothing, young master, just an arrow in my leg." Lu Da grinned widely.
Shen Lian stood at the bow of the boat and looked towards the shore. He could vaguely see some people lying in the grass on the bank. The two small boats in front were gone, and only one of the two small boats behind remained, floating on the water.
Sir, times have changed!
Five or six corpses were floating on the water, one of which drifted right in front of Shen Lian. This guy had been shot in the head; the bullet had blown his skull open, revealing his white brain matter.
A strong fishy smell wafted over, and Shen Lian immediately felt his stomach churning. He couldn't hold it in any longer and leaned over the gunwale, vomiting violently. Shen Lian threw up his dinner from the night before and only stopped when his stomach was empty.
"Young Master, rinse your mouth and wipe it!" Xiao Yue'er nervously brought over a cup of water and a towel.
Shen Lian took the cup, rinsed his mouth, and then vigorously wiped his face with a towel. He had made a huge fool of himself today; out of so many people, he was the only one who had thrown up.
It's really not his fault. He's a modern person living in peacetime; he's never experienced anything like this before. He didn't realize how intense the fighting was, but once it stopped and he saw the corpses all over the ground, it was unbearable.
"Immediately carry Lu Da into the cabin for treatment. To avoid unnecessary trouble, Captain, set sail and leave this place as soon as possible," Shen Lian ordered sternly.
Seeing Shen Lian's stern face, no one dared to laugh at him, and they quickly began to clean up the battlefield.
Shen Lian returned to the inner cabin and hurriedly asked Yue'er to help him find clothes to change into, as he was soaked in sweat from the intense battle. Yue'er first used a wet towel to wipe Shen Lian's body, and only after seeing that he was indeed unharmed did she feel completely relieved.
"None of you know how to treat injuries?" Shen Lian came out after changing his clothes and saw a group of people helplessly watching Lu Da Shou. Shen Lian couldn't help but shake his head, although he had never treated injuries before. But he had seen it in TV shows and movies before.
Shen Lian went back to his room and took out a bag, and then asked Yue'er to get scissors and strong liquor.
"Everyone, learn from this! Hold down Lu Da's hands and feet first."
Shen Lian first tore open Lu Da's trouser leg, cut off one side of the arrowhead with scissors, then grabbed the arrow shaft and pulled it out in one swift motion. Lu Da groaned in pain.
"It's only just begun! Just bear with it a little longer, hold him down tight. Remember, for external injuries, you must first clean the wound with strong liquor to prevent bacterial infection." Shen Lian said, and began to wash Lu Da's wound with strong liquor. Lu Da was in so much pain that he was trembling all over, his hands and feet flailing around. If there hadn't been five or six people there, they really wouldn't have been able to hold him down.
After the blood and dirt from the wound were washed away, Shen Lian took out the Yunnan Baiyao he had prepared and sprinkled it on the wound, then wrapped it with gauze.
"Alright!" Shen Lian clapped his hands and stood up, and only then did the others release Lu Da, who was covered in sweat.
"Don't get the wound wet these next few days. I have some Western medicine pills I brought back from abroad. Taking a few a day should be enough." As he spoke, Shen Lian handed Lu Da a small paper packet containing twenty amoxicillin pills that he had brought with him.
"Thank you, young master!" Lu Da's eyes reddened with gratitude. He had thought that with his injury, especially on this ship, his leg was probably ruined. He hadn't expected Shen Lian to personally treat his injury and give him precious Western medicine. He secretly vowed to be loyal to the young master to the death.
"Yes! I've seen your bravery. Take good care of yourself and recover well. I'll be looking to rely on you in the future!"
"Everyone fought bravely today, killing and wounding dozens of bandits, while only Lu Da suffered a minor injury. It can be said that we have won a great victory. I have decided to reward everyone with twenty taels of silver!"
"Wow! Great! Thank you, young master! Thank you, young master!" Everyone was overjoyed to hear about the reward.
"Lu Da deserves the greatest credit, and he was also injured, so add twenty taels."
The reward money was cashed out on the spot. For convenience, Shen Lian had Uncle Fu exchange some silver dollars for him and keep them with him.
Looking at the piles of silver dollars in their hands, everyone grinned from ear to ear. Lu Da, in particular, felt as if he were in a dream; he had never seen so much silver in his life, and his thoughts were in turmoil.
In order not to dampen everyone's enthusiasm, Shen Lian refrained from pointing out the shortcomings. "We'll discuss them later!"
"What do you think of this group of bandits today?"
The group discussed the issue at length, offering only empty praise about how easily the opponent could be defeated. Nothing of substance was said. Only Lu Da remained silent, frowning and seemingly deep in thought.
"Lu Da, you have more experience in the ways of the world, what do you think?"
“Young Master, everything else is normal, but these bandits are going a bit too far. Normally, if they encounter someone tough, bandits will just say a few nice words, take some benefits, and leave. They won't linger, much less fight to the death. Because they simply can't afford to fight.”
"These bandits still rushed at us despite our heavy firepower. It didn't seem like a robbery; it seemed more like they were seeking revenge," Lu Da muttered.
"Seeking revenge? I've only been here a few days and haven't offended anyone. Could it be an enemy from the original owner's past?"
"Uncle Lin, you've been with our family for decades! Do we have any enemies?" Shen Lian turned to ask Shen Lin.
"I don't know about the people on the battlefield before, but since the master came to Linqing, he has always been kind to everyone. I haven't heard of him having any enemies!"
That's strange. Who the hell wants to kill me? Is it just to rob me and then kill me to cover it up? Shen Lian pondered, stroking his chin.
