Chapter 23 Test
After having breakfast in the morning, they said goodbye to the landlady and headed to the main road to catch a horse-drawn carriage to the inner city.
I learned from the landlady that it would take at least several days to walk to the inner city, and people usually travel by horse-drawn carriage.
Watching the two walk further and further away, Ivan, who was standing at the door, lifted the hair that was covering his eyes, revealing a pair of sword-like eyebrows and bright eyes. His originally dull black eyes gradually became shiny!
The proprietress also came to the door, watching the two leave, and said jokingly:
"You wouldn't happen to have your eye on that girl, would you? That old man is so generous, he's not from an ordinary family. You should just give up!"
Ivan's face flushed slightly, but he said firmly:
"I've made up my mind, I'm going to Austin Magic Academy!"
The proprietress patted Ivan on the head.
"What are you daydreaming about, you brat? Go wash the dishes!"
Once on the main road, Gene hired a carriage for 1 silver coin, and the carriage slowly made its way towards the inner city.
The closer we got to the inner city, the more pedestrians with children we saw on the road. In the afternoon, we finally arrived at the city gate of the inner city.
Diana was somewhat surprised when she got off the carriage and saw the tents of different sizes erected around the city gate.
'They're doing a group camping trip here!'
As they were about to pass through the city gate, they were stopped by a soldier in silver armor wielding a long spear.
"Auston Magic Academy will begin accepting students in five days, and camping is not allowed in the inner city."
Gene was somewhat displeased.
"We'll go to the hotel."
The soldier looked the two men over again, but ultimately let them pass.
Diana finally understood why so many people were sleeping in the neighborhood; she guessed that hotels in the inner city were more expensive.
Once inside the inner city, the surrounding buildings became more 'luxurious,' mostly constructed of brick and stone, which was indeed much better than the wooden buildings in the outer city.
After spending the afternoon shopping and eating quite a bit of food on the street, Diana concluded that the food was generally mediocre and very expensive.
As expected, a night's stay at the inn costs one silver coin, but the environment is indeed much better, and the bed is very soft, so it's worth it!
Several days passed in the blink of an eye, and one morning Diana was awakened by a noisy sound outside her window.
I looked out the window when I got up, and the streets were bustling with traffic!
I glanced at the old man leisurely reading a book at the table and felt a little anxious.
"Grandpa Gene, isn't today the day for admissions to the Austin Magic Academy? Why didn't you wake me up earlier?"
Gene turned a page of his book, seemingly oblivious to everything else.
"No rush, the recruitment will last for three days, it's not too late to go tomorrow."
Diana tugged at his clothes, her eyes full of anticipation.
Then, following the crowd, they arrived at a manor where a long queue had already formed, and there were many luxurious carriages around.
Following the queue slowly forward was a bit boring. Looking around, I noticed another queue, but it only had a dozen or so people, which was much smaller.
Diana tugged at Ragen's sleeve.
"Grandpa Gene, there are fewer people queuing over there, let's queue over there!"
A man with a child behind them said self-deprecatingly:
"That's the line of nobles over there. It's already a blessing from the king that we commoners can even participate in the test."
Diana didn't care about any of that and went straight to the back of the line.
Gene stood to the side, and the people around him didn't pay much attention. After all, no civilian would be foolish enough to go there; being discovered would be a serious matter.
The man who had been explaining broke out in a cold sweat. Knowing it was better to avoid trouble, he said nothing.
As expected, the noble team was fast; it wasn't long before it was almost her turn. She was also very curious to see the people in front of her being tested.
The person being tested placed their hand on a rather large crystal ball, waited a moment, and nothing happened. The instructor, expressionless, said "failed."
A woman led her dejected child away from the line, and this process repeated itself, with expectation and frustration alternating in an instant.
On the noble side, someone succeeded. It was a green-haired boy who placed his hand on the crystal ball, and the crystal ball gradually emitted a blue light.
"Look! The crystal ball is glowing!"
"It's true! Nobles are indeed more likely to have an affinity for magic!"
The surrounding civilians started discussing it amongst themselves.
A middle-aged man wearing glasses, who was examining the nobleman, adjusted his glasses.
"Not bad, not bad, it's wind-attribute compatible and the brightness is just right. Let's go to the manor to rest first, and then we'll head to the academy together after this."
The green-haired boy bowed respectfully, after all, the status of teachers at Austin Magic Academy was no lower than that of ordinary nobles.
Diana's test was soon coming up, and only two out of the first ten or so people passed. The commoners' test went very quickly, but so far no one has passed.
Upon closer inspection of the crystal, there was nothing particularly special about it.
The instructor with glasses calmly said:
"Don't be nervous, just put your hands on it, and the attribute crystal ball will guide the elemental attributes within you."
Upon hearing this, Diana no longer hesitated and placed her hand on the crystal.
The moment my hand touched the crystal ball, I felt a suction force coming from the crystal, and several crystals of different colors inside my body lit up automatically!
Almost instantly, the crystal ball emitted a blinding red light.
The middle-aged teacher wearing glasses suddenly stood up from his seat.
"Perfect fire affinity! How is that possible!"
Wow! The light from her crystal ball is so bright!
"This is absolutely genius!"
Envious whispers and comments arose from all around!
Before the onlookers could finish their shock, the bright red crystal ball slowly dimmed, and then a dazzling blue light shone brightly again.
The instructor wiped his glasses in disbelief.
"Two opposing attributes perfectly compatible? How is that possible?!"
Then a scene he would never forget for the rest of his life unfolded.
After the azure light went out, green, purple, cyan, and black lights came on one after another, still dazzling!
A childish voice broke the silence.
"Um... does this mean I passed?"
The instructor, who had been staring wide-eyed, finally came to his senses.
"Approved, of course it's approved. You all rest here for a bit, I need to go back and inform the dean!"
After saying that, he mounted a white horse and rode off to the astonishment of the crowd.
Diana glanced at the many nobles who had lined up behind her to take the test, then looked at the empty chair in front of her, feeling a little embarrassed because they couldn't take the test.
Suddenly her eyes lit up, and she walked around the table and sat down in the chair.
"The next person can come and take the test!"
The noble children lining up had a row of question marks above their heads. What? They were going to take another test?
The group looked at another instructor standing to the side, who also looked puzzled.
He glanced at Diana, who was sitting at the table with only her head peeking out, and seemed about to say something but then suddenly remembered what had just happened. He swallowed hard and said nothing, which was taken as tacit agreement.
Seeing that the instructor didn't say anything, the chubby boy with yellow curly hair in front mustered up his courage.
"I...I want to take the test!"
Diana nodded in a serious manner.
"Hmm~ Don't be nervous, just put your hand on the crystal~"
The chubby boy hesitated before putting his hand on it, and when he found that the crystal didn't light up, he broke down and started yelling while holding his head!
Diana shouted:
"Quiet down! What's the rush! Put your hands on it and wait a bit longer, look at you, so impatient!"
The chubby boy was startled, wiped away his tears, and stammered:
"Am I...am I alright?"
"Just do the test, put your hand on it and wait a bit!"
The chubby boy placed his hand on the crystal again, and after a moment, the crystal ball suddenly emitted a faint yellow light!
The chubby boy stared in disbelief at the glowing crystal ball in his hand, and the instructor beside him was also somewhat incredulous!
Diana nodded with a mature air. In fact, she had already determined through her examination that the chubby boy had an affinity for the earth element.
"Hmm~ Not bad, passed, go to the back."
The chubby boy went around the table, knelt down, hugged Diana's legs, and choked out:
"Sis~ From now on, you're my real sister~"
A butler standing nearby was speechless. "Young Master Fitch, nobles cannot kneel so easily!"
Diana shook off the chubby boy clinging to her leg, and Fitch, without getting angry, got up and instructed the butler beside him:
"What are you all standing there for? How could you let my sister sit on such a hard chair? Go get a cushion, and also, prepare some dessert and tea!"
The butler hurriedly got into the carriage and brought out a luxurious cushion, followed by two maids carrying snacks and tea.
Fitch took the cushion and respectfully placed it under Diana's arm, asking:
"Sis, what's your name? I'll follow you from now on!"
Diana sat on the soft cushion and popped a pastry into her mouth. 'Mmm~ So delicious~'
He stuffed another one into his mouth and stammered:
"Wu...I...my name is Diana. You...you're not bad, kid. I'll protect you from now on~"
Fitch nodded repeatedly in approval.
"Um... can I start the test now?"
A boy in line timidly raised his hand.
