Traveling to Ancient Times: My Space Contains Weapons

Chapter 4 Selling Rice at the Gate of Qingyun City

"Chu Chen, are you looking for death? If you keep talking nonsense, believe me I'll call the casino to come and collect the debt tomorrow."

Seeing that Chu Chen had openly revealed his affair with the village chief's wife, Ma San threatened him viciously.

At this moment, Second Uncle pulled Chu Chen and headed towards Qingyun City.

"Why bother talking to someone like that? You've already been harmed enough by him."

He muttered curses as he walked away, talking to Chu Chen.

My second uncle's name was Chu Dazhuang. When he was young, he joined the army and was wounded in the leg, so he was sent back to Mashan Village.

After returning home, he stayed at home and farmed diligently, living a simple and frugal life.

Chu Chen was pulled along by Chu Dazhuang like a little chick, and soon they disappeared at the village entrance.

Mashan Village is more than 20 miles away from Qingyun City.

The two men, one a cripple and the other a man who had just been killed and revived, moved at a snail's pace.

The two walked for about three hours before arriving outside Qingyun City.

Chu Chen exclaimed that he couldn't take it anymore after walking such a long distance, as he was already injured.

Upon reaching the city gate, he was so exhausted that he collapsed to the ground.

"You should exercise more. You're exhausted like a little chick after such a short walk."

Without giving him a chance to catch his breath, Chu Dazhuang carried Chu Chen toward the city gate.

A long queue had already formed at the city gate. Chu Chen looked at Chu Dazhuang with a puzzled expression.

"Second Uncle, what's the point of queuing? Are they giving out washbasins?"

Before Chu Dazhuang could speak, the person in front of him chimed in: "You're from out of town, aren't you? You don't know you have to pay a city entry fee to enter the city?"

The man turned around and looked at Chu Chen, who was dressed in tattered clothes, and said...

You have to pay to enter the city? What kind of world is this?

He then turned to look at his second uncle, who also shook his head, indicating that he knew nothing about it either.

So, feeling awkward, he said to the woman in front of him, "Excuse me, ma'am, I'm from the countryside and I don't know the rules. May I ask how much it costs to enter the city?"

Which village in the countryside?

The old lady's question stumped Chu Chen.

My second uncle looked at me with a blank expression, thinking, "Aren't we from Mashan Village?"

"Um, it's just a small mountain village that's very far away. Auntie, you still haven't told me how much it costs to go to the city."

The old lady in front held up two fingers and said arrogantly, "Two coins each."

"Damn, that's expensive!" Chu Dazhuang exclaimed as he walked out of the crowd after hearing Chu Chen's name mentioned.

"Second Uncle, what are you doing? It's almost our turn, why are you going out?"

Chu Chen shouted.

"Do you have money?" Chu Dazhuang asked.

"I didn't, didn't you?" Chu Chen looked at Chu Dazhuang in confusion.

"The money is all with your second aunt, where would the money come from?"

Holy crap, turns out we walked for ages and couldn't even get through the city gate. This second uncle doesn't even carry any money with him when he goes out.

That's a joke. What farmer would carry around a bunch of copper coins in his pocket for no reason?

Besides, you need to have it...

"Alright, let's go back. We can't get into the city today." Chu Dazhuang said leisurely, then stretched out his hand to grab Chu Chen again.

Chu Chen dodged Chu Dazhuang's clutches.

"Just kidding, we've been gone for so long, how could we possibly go back?"

Chu Chen dodged his second uncle and said, "Besides, I came here to sell things. What would it look like if I went back?"

"What exactly do you want to go in there for?" Chu Dazhuang sat on the ground with a worried look on his face.

I visited Qingyun City when I was young, and back then there was no such thing as an entrance fee.

Chu Chen looked at the crowds coming and going at the city gate and then spoke.

"Second Uncle, wait here for me, I'm going to the outhouse."

After saying that, he headed towards the nearby grove of trees.

"Lazy people poop and pee a lot, even if they don't have to."

Chu Dazhuang cursed at Chu Chen and then plopped down on the ground.

Finding a secluded spot, Chu Chen slipped into the mall.

What should we sell?

After thinking for a long time, I finally found a small burlap sack containing about three kilograms of rice.

Then he strolled over and sat down next to Chu Dazhuang.

"Look, look, look! My second uncle took two liters of rice to get married, but his wife ran away. He's selling the rice cheaply now."

Chu Chen's shout startled Chu Dazhuang, who was pondering how to get into the city.

"You brat, where did your second aunt run off to? And where did she steal this rice?"

"Oh, don't worry about it..."

With that shout, several people quickly gathered around, grabbed Chu Chen's rice, and took a look.

"Hey sir, how much is this rice?"

Oh no, I had no idea about prices!

Chu Chen turned to look at Chu Dazhuang and quietly asked, "How much is the rice?"

Chu Dazhuang looked completely bewildered: "I've never bought it before. Who can afford this stuff?"

"Young man, I see your rice is of good quality. It's five copper coins a liter on the market, and you have about two liters here. How about twelve copper coins?" a man in his thirties said with a sly glint in his eyes.

Chu Chen looked up at him and thought, "Five coins, damn it." He thought to himself, "Are you kidding me?" But this was not the time for nonsense. They should go into the city first. Once they got there, money would still be an issue.

"Big brother, you're so generous, sell it!" Chu Chen shouted. Although he knew it would definitely fetch more than that, his only goal was to get into the city.

This startled Chu Dazhuang, who was standing nearby. "This brat doesn't even haggle over prices?"

The man happily handed over twelve copper coins, grabbed the sack, and disappeared into the crowd.

At this moment, the people next to Chu Chen and Chu Dazhuang shook their heads. Such good quality rice could be sold for twenty coins a liter.

"What an ignorant fool who's never seen the world."

"Of course! This kid just told me he's from the countryside. Do you even know which village he's from? He must be from the mountains."

"Sigh, what a waste of such good quality rice. If I had known earlier, I would have bought it for him long ago."

Two elderly women were exchanging information at the city gate.

Chu Chen completely ignored everyone and pulled his second uncle toward the city gate.

"Let's go, Second Uncle, into the city!"

Chu Dazhuang looked at Chu Chen with a pained expression; this kid hadn't lost any of his extravagant spending skills.

After queuing for almost half an hour, the two finally arrived at the city gate again.

Chu Chen took out four copper coins and successfully entered the city.

The two guards at the gate looked at the fool with disdain in their eyes.

Upon arriving in the city, Chu Chen realized just how vast the gap between the rich and poor was in this world.

The city was bustling with traffic, and the streets were filled with people dressed in finery.

The cobblestone streets were filled with all sorts of food.

The clothing store was filled with all kinds of clothes.

The aroma of meat wafting from the restaurant made Chu Dazhuang swallow hard.

"Second Uncle, we'll eat here in a bit," Chu Chen said arrogantly.

Chu Dazhuang looked at his incongruous attire and thought about the eight copper coins Chu Chen had left in his hand.

You're not that old, but you have quite the big ideas.

At this moment, the two stopped in front of a shop with a large "當" (meaning "to offer" or "to provide") written on it.

What are you doing here?

Chu Dazhuang asked in confusion.

"Wait here for me, I'll be out in a bit."

After Chu Chen finished speaking, he strode into the pawnshop.

"Go beg somewhere else, don't ruin my business."

The pawnshop clerk saw the ragged boy and waved him away.

"Are you sure you want to fire me? Aren't you afraid your boss will dock your pay and fire you?"

The waiter, seeing the man spouting strange words, also became interested.

"Oh, may I ask, young master, what kind of family heirloom do you want to keep?"
