Otherworldly Companions: Every Handsome Man is Extraordinary
Chapter 9 Territorial Affairs
The next few days were quite leisurely. Lin Yi and Fan Qingyin didn't go out to work until after the wedding banquet, when they had seen off all the guests.
These days, they mainly familiarize themselves with the affairs of their home and territory, accompany Jiang Yu on inspections of the territory, and manage the personnel and economy within the territory and manor. They need to master and become familiar with all these tasks before they officially go out to work, so that even if they are not in the territory for work in the future, they can make proper arrangements.
Lin Yi himself was a military commander, and he was most skilled at training and leading people. He was responsible for training guards, security of the manor, and the security of the territory.
As for economic taxes and personnel transfers, they are currently all under Fan Qingyin's jurisdiction, because he will be staying in the manor for a relatively long time and is very likely to become a divine messenger of the territory or the surrounding area, which will make it more convenient for him to handle affairs.
Jiang Yu didn't want to become like other traditional women, spending their days looking beautiful and living a life of luxury under the pampering of their husbands. That made her feel no meaning or value in her life, like a legendary hen that lays golden eggs. Everyone feeds her the best food, the sweetest morning dew, and builds her the most magnificent chicken coop in the world, but all of this is just so that the hen can lay golden eggs.
The hen is a domestic fowl; she can be happy as long as she has enough to eat and wear. But Jiang Yu is a human being, a woman who can think and has emotions. What she needs more is the satisfaction of her spiritual world and the need for self-actualization.
This is a world incredibly friendly to women, effortlessly satisfying the first four needs in Maslow's hierarchy of needs: physiological, safety, social, and esteem needs. Yet, it is also incredibly cruel; for women, the sole purpose of their existence, and the greatest value they can realize, is procreation.
Jiang Yu didn't like this. She didn't want to be a caged canary, or a hen that lays golden eggs forever.
When Jiang Yu went out to inspect the territory, he learned that his territory was rich in pearls and also had a very rare transparent coral.
The waters off Hollandpool are known for producing pearls of exceptionally high quality, often yielding large, perfectly round, and beautifully colored gems. Some rare, colorful baroque pearls can even be found. Transparent coral is a specialty of this region, as it is almost completely invisible on the seabed, making it very difficult to mine. Only the most experienced pearl divers can find it.
Jewelry crafted from such transparent coral is even more translucent than crystal, making it highly sought after by women and extremely valuable. It's fair to say that 90% of Hollandpool County's income comes from these two sources.
When Jiang Yu subtly suggested that she wanted to try managing and coordinating these two fiscal and trade revenues, Fan Qingyin was very surprised.
In his view, this was too hard on women. No woman would ever want to do such tedious and difficult work because no matter which husband was in charge, the final income would go into the woman's account, and they could just sit back and enjoy the fruits of her labor.
"Qingyin, I just want to find something to do. You see, I'm idle anyway, so I might as well learn from you while you're still unemployed. I'll start by being your assistant. If I learn well, I can help you with some of the work. I think it's really tiring for you to go out to work and then come home to worry about so many things." Jiang
Yu sat at the table and looked at the thick stack of documents and reports piled on Fan Qingyin's desk, as well as the faint blue circles under his eyes, and knew that he had been working a huge workload these past few days.
“Xiaoyu, I don’t feel it’s hard. This is the ability and obligation that your husband must have. I have been trained in this since I was a child, so that one day I can be a match for a partner like you and help you continue the glory and honor of your family. This is just the beginning. After all, I come from another empire, and the nature of my family is completely different from yours. It just takes a process of adaptation.”
Fan Qingyin put down her quill pen, stood up, and went to Jiang Yu's side to pour her a cup of tea.
"Qingyin, will my request put you in a difficult position? Will it make others question your work ability?" Jiang Yu took Fan Qingyin's hand and made him sit next to her, realizing the crux of the problem.
“I don’t care what others think, Xiaoyu. I don’t want other wives to enjoy the leisure time that you don’t. While other wives are enjoying delicious food and life, you still have to face these tedious documents and deal with these things that shouldn’t take up your energy. I don’t need anyone to say anything, but as your husband, I will feel that I have failed in my duty.”
Fan Qingyin grasped Jiang Yu's hand in return, preventing her from leaving, and pressed her hand against her cheek. "I'm very happy that you care about me and feel sorry for me."
Unexpectedly, Fan Qingyin made such a move, and the temperature around them seemed to rise instantly. Fan Qingyin's icy blue eyes remained as calm as ever, but looking at her now felt like burning her skin. Jiang Yu felt flustered and hurriedly withdrew her hand, almost stepping on her skirt when she stood up.
"Well, anyway, I still want to help you out a bit, even if it's just taking a little time each day to sit next to you and do what I can. I'll go check the kitchen; it seems they made your favorite seaweed salad today."
Jiang Yu rushed out of Fan Qingyin's room in a panic, patted her flushed cheeks, and thought to herself that the men in this world were simply too unfair. Then she went to the kitchen to check the dishes for the day so that she could add the iced seaweed dish in time.
Little did she know that Lin Yi had witnessed her entire series of actions. When he saw Jiang Yu come out of Fan Qingyin's room with a flushed face, Lin Yi's usually bright sea-blue eyes dimmed.
Meanwhile, Fan Qingyin, who remained in the room, gently clenched her hand, which still seemed to retain warmth. Her lowered eyelids concealed her icy blue eyes, hiding a trace of disappointment within. She quickly composed herself, regaining her usual calm and collected demeanor, and went back to handling her affairs.
