Rebirth of a Farmer's Dad

After chatting with Liu Tao, Luo Feng finally understood the truth of the matter.

To be honest, Liu Tao is a pitiful man. He's in his thirties, and because his family is poor, he can't even find a wife. Since his family is struggling to make ends meet and he doesn't have much earning power, Liu Tao has lowered his standards for a partner. In his words, he just wants a woman willing to spend the rest of her life with him.

Fortunately, hard work pays off. Although Liu Tao's family wasn't well-off, he had a kind heart and was always willing to lend a hand to any chores that needed help. Because of his good relationships with others, everyone secretly helped him with his marriage.

Perhaps it was divine intervention, or at least that's what he said. Through introductions from villagers, he quickly found a wife. She was a high school teacher in the county, but because her husband had died young and she had a daughter, the surrounding villagers labeled her a jinx. Rural people are inevitably superstitious. In their eyes, such a woman was destined for a bad end.

Fortunately, Liu Tao doesn't care about this at all. He's already in his thirties, and it's already great that he has a wife willing to be with him. As for the daughter the woman brought with her, Liu Tao loves her just as much. Anyway, he has no children of his own, so he'll just raise her like his own daughter.

This family's life was originally harmonious and happy. Frankly, as long as you don't care about other people's opinions, you can live a carefree life. But their happiness was short-lived. Liu Tao's daughter contracted a strange illness, suffering from a persistent high fever, and ultimately couldn't be saved. With their daughter gone, the remaining couple was naturally devastated. They thought time would heal their deep wounds, and perhaps after having new children, all of this would be forgotten.

However, Liu Tao's wife was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. In today's world, this might not seem like a serious illness. But let's not forget that current medical technology is relatively underdeveloped. In other words, with today's medical standards, a cancer diagnosis often means simply waiting to die at home. Furthermore, this already impoverished family simply couldn't afford the high costs of treatment. In other words, poverty became the final shackle that ultimately led to their demise.

Under these circumstances, Liu Tao could only stay at home with his wife, waiting for her to die. Although he tried everything to cheer her up, nothing worked. Now, the doctor has clearly told him that his wife doesn't have many more days to live.

It was only then that Liu Tao suddenly remembered that due to their family's dire financial situation, they hadn't held a wedding banquet or anything like that. Their marriage was less about being married and more about simply settling down together. No one had cared about any of this before, but as his wife lay dying, Liu Tao suddenly realized that if she were to leave him, he would be all alone in the end.

Because of all the things he and his wife had gone through, Liu Tao always felt he owed her so much. Putting aside everything else, he at least owed her a proper wedding. When they insisted on being together, almost both families disapproved of the marriage; not a single person even came to offer their congratulations. This had always been a thorn in Liu Tao's side. Now that his wife was nearing the end of her life, he felt he should find a way to give her a decent wedding, at least to let her take some wedding photos, so that he would have something to remember her by when he thought of her in the future.

After inquiring around the county, Liu Tao finally chose Luo Feng's wedding courtyard. The previous matchmaking event had been a huge success, known to everyone, which had brought considerable popularity to the wedding courtyard. Liu Tao naturally came because of its reputation.

However, he was so poor that he had almost exhausted all his wealth on medical treatment for his wife and daughter, and his house was empty except for what he could sell. He simply couldn't afford to pay. That's why Liu Tao kept hesitating in front of the wedding venue. On the one hand, he really had no money, and on the other hand, he didn't want to let down his wife who had been with him for so long. Caught in this dilemma, he could only spend a long time in this state of hesitation.

"Do you know how much it costs to put together a wedding? Besides, we don't have any professional photographers here, so you'll have to find someone else if you want to take wedding photos." After listening to his story, Luo Feng thought for a moment and slowly said.

"I know, but I also know that your place is the most famous in the county, and I don't want my wife's wedding to have any regrets," Liu Tao said somewhat sadly.

"I understand how you feel, but I also have my own difficulties."

Hearing Luo Feng's words, a look of despair appeared in Wang Tao's eyes. Perhaps in his view, this ending was something he had long anticipated. He silently turned and left, leaving behind the words, "Thank you, I won't come again."

"Wait, what are you planning to do?" Luo Feng sensed something was wrong with him and asked.

"Go back and stay with my wife, let's wait to die together." Liu Tao's voice was hollow; he was completely desperate at this point.

"You..." His answer left Luo Feng momentarily at a loss for words. Although he didn't want to get involved in this mess, he never imagined that his words would drive someone to a dead end. Even if he had never met this person before and didn't know them at all.

Perhaps it was the conscience hidden deep within Luo Feng's heart that ultimately led him to change his mind.

"I'm afraid I can't afford to throw you a wedding for free. But I can help you take a wedding photo for you and your wife." Luo Feng made this concession because, in his opinion, he could afford to take a photo.

"This is already a pretty good ending, isn't it?"

"That's true. My wife told me that one shouldn't be too greedy."

At this moment, a slight smile finally appeared on Liu Tao's face; at least he wasn't as suicidal as before.

"Alright, hurry up and tell me where you live? I'll be able to find you once I've found a photographer." Luo Feng stepped forward and patted Liu Tao on the shoulder, saying to him.

"Can you hurry up? The doctor said my wife won't last more than a few days," Liu Tao said, his eyes pleading.

"I know that, I'll try to be as quick as possible." Since he had decided to help, Luo Feng naturally had no reason to refuse.

Next, Liu Tao told Luo Feng her detailed address, and the two agreed that Luo Hong would bring a photographer to their home three days later to take wedding photos.

Luo Feng believes the biggest purpose of this photo is to provide Liu Tao with a keepsake when he thinks of his wife. Therefore, he feels the two didn't need to make any preparations; for a couple like them, formal attire seems superfluous now. As long as they always cherish each other, what else matters? At least, that's what I think.

The reason I told Liu Tao it would be in three days was twofold: firstly, I had things to take care of, and secondly, I needed enough time to find a photographer. These days, getting a photo taken is a rare thing; there are only two photo studios in the entire county, and you have to make an appointment in advance.

Regardless of the outcome, this is all I can do for Liu Tao. I guess it's a good deed I can do, and I hope it brings me peace of mind.
