Magical Journey: The Other Shore Blooms on the Other Shore

Chapter 46 Beatrice, the Witch's Capital

Professor Slater, a C-rank character among the Snow Guards, is the pinnacle of Beatrice's power, aside from the A-rank [Snow Maiden] and the B-rank [Fool]. He is also the only male character among the ten Snow Guards.

He certainly has his own outstanding qualities; otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to become one of the Ten Snow Guards, let alone climb to the position of C-rank.

His magical skill level was, of course, at the bottom of the entire Snow Guard group. In fact, any magician who became a witch would have a higher level of magic than him, which was only natural.

But this did not prevent the Empress from praising him; he was respectfully addressed as the Imperial Advisor by the Empress.

In his youth, he improved a great deal of magic, enabling many male mages, those with insufficient magic power, to use some advanced magic. Of course, witches could use these spells even faster and with less magic power.

Without a doubt, he was a genius in magical research. No, calling him a genius would put even the so-called geniuses of Beatrice to shame. Professor Slater was a giant in magical technology at the entire Beatrice level.

Besides magical improvement, he also focused on witch training. For Beatrice, due to some external pressure, the quantity and quality of witches were the top priority, and Slater had already made outstanding contributions in this regard.

Although his methods tarnished his honor, his achievements deserve recognition.

But ultimately, for Beatrice, these so-called methods don't even deserve to be called a stain on the word.

Professor Slater had hundreds of wives.

It's an astonishing number, isn't it? In fact, this is only what the authorities know; there are several more behind the scenes, perhaps even he himself can't keep track of them all.

But can a magical oddball like him even experience love?

Hmm... perhaps he had some before his first wife passed away. But he probably didn't have any after that. He called the wives he married his collection; most of them were beautiful magicians, and of course, there were about ten witches among his more than one hundred wives.

My friend, you should know that in many countries, even a witch cannot produce one. Witches are generally used as strategic weapons in many kingdoms.

Among Slater's wives were about ten genuine witches.

It's unclear whether these witches volunteered or not, but Slater certainly had the ability to make them volunteer, even if they didn't.

Are these so-called collections for pleasure and enjoyment? Professor Slater certainly wasn't that idle; he was naturally engaged in research on life.

Many of the children born from these collections have become pillars of Beatrice's family, while many more have naturally become experimental subjects of this lifeless magical freak, and dying on the experimental table is a common occurrence.

That concludes our introduction to Professor Slater for now. To sum it up, in a world governed by normal values, he would be a scoundrel for whose sins even a hundred deaths wouldn't be enough to atone for.

But here, in Beatrice, he is now one of the pinnacles of Beatrice worship.

Let's look at the harp. After Slater bought it, the harp naturally became a subject of his experiments.

The goal of the experiment is simple: to teach magic to people who have no magic power. That's absurd, isn't it?

But in Slater's mind, this was entirely possible. If he completed this research and enabled those useless people without magic to use magic, he would be the most outstanding scientist in the entire history of Beatrice, and perhaps in the whole world.

He will push down the elusive [Snow Woman] and become a top-tier Snow Guard in no time.

The people of Beatrice will remember his deeds for generations to come.

Everyone will remember his great name—Slater.

Slater had already experimented on several test subjects. He had studied the mechanism of magic triggering for half his life but still couldn't figure it out. However, he did manage to figure out one thing.

Witches can sacrifice something important in their lives to gain a lot of magic power. Ultimately, magic power and life force are related, but whether they are inseparable is no longer important.

Then, a brilliant idea was born in Slater's mind.

If a person directly burns their life force, can they then use magic?

He was initially overjoyed, but the results of the several experimental subjects he found were disappointing. Most of them could not withstand the high-pressure extraction of their life force and died of sepsis without exception. Not a single one could even survive three days of the experiment.

This greatly dampened Slater's enthusiasm for research. After all, if he couldn't even tolerate this level of life drain, how could he possibly activate magic?

Even Slater would become disheartened after one experiment after another, and one failure after another.

He wouldn't put all his eggs in one basket, so he designated the project 871 and handed it over to his researchers (many of whom were his children).

Slater himself went to tackle other magical technology barriers. If he couldn't produce results, his Class C status would be in jeopardy under the fierce competition. Therefore, he had to temporarily give up personally supervising Project 871 and devote himself to completing other research.

Qin was one of the many experimental subjects in this Project 871.

Upon arriving at this secret laboratory, he was to cooperate with the researchers.

Qin was injected with some kind of drug, probably a sedative, in a daze, and then pushed to the blood-stained experimental table. The mechanical device automatically put on Qin's head, and in an instant, sharp spikes grew from the hood and stabbed into Qin's head.

"Ah—ah—" Qin screamed naturally; he was only three years old.

But Qin's screams did not elicit any pity from the researchers; instead, they were thrilled.

“This child can hold on!” they exclaimed.

No child could muster the strength to cry out under the life-draining power of this research machine; they convulsed for a moment before falling into a coma.

"Quickly—increase the speed a bit, see its limit, be careful not to kill it!" The researchers were in a flurry of activity, busily adjusting the parameters of the equipment. The complexity of these magical devices meant that perhaps only the professionals here could operate them with such ease.

"Ah—" Qin's cries echoed throughout the entire laboratory.

Before long, Qin could no longer hold on and fell into a deep coma.

Once she faints, she can no longer feel pain, whether it's mental or physical pain. All of that disappears, and this must be the happiest moment for Qin.
