Starting as a Wallfacer, his defection to the Three-Body Problem shocked the world.
Chapter 26 Life is tough, Taylor performs for money
"So, that's how it is?"
Three days later, in the Garden of Eden.
A young man joined Taylor as he fished.
“Yes, I have some guesses about Hines’ plan, but I still need him to do some things for me, so it’s not time to reveal the answer yet,” Lin Xuan said.
Taylor was shocked upon hearing this.
"So fast?"
Shock level from Taylor +15.
Taylor knew what Lin Xuan meant. He had already broken through the barrier with Hines, but for some reason, Lin Xuan had not yet revealed Hines' true plan to everyone.
"This guy is really terrifying."
Taylor thought to himself.
The Wallfacer Project has only been going on for less than a year, and Lin Xuan has already broken through the walls of two Wallfacers. No, according to the order, Hines is the third Wallfacer, and perhaps the plan has already been exposed by this guy as well.
Taylor was even more shocked when she thought about this.
If all of this is true, then the Wallfacer Project can now be declared a basic failure. Apart from Luo Ji, the other three Wallfacers have all had their plans deciphered by Lin Xuan.
What he didn't know was that Lin Xuan actually knew about Luo Ji's plan as well.
The reason Lin Xuan didn't say anything was that she didn't want to cause herself trouble.
Zhi Zi is still monitoring him. Luo Ji's plan to face the wall is a reverse plan; the fewer people who know about it, the less dangerous it is.
If she were to say that she had guessed Luo Ji's plan, the Trisolarans would probably spare no effort to hunt down Lin Xuan.
After all, his knowledge of the Dark Forest Law was more than ten times greater than Luo Ji's knowledge of its threat.
But Taylor suddenly realized what was going on.
"Wait a minute, Hines is useful to you, so you didn't choose to break through his barrier. Does that mean I'm useless?"
Taylor was the first Wallfacer to break through the barrier for Lin Xuan, and he did so so quickly, in less than a month, which made him very frustrated.
It's already over before I've even started anything.
Lin Xuan smiled. He couldn't very well say, "You were the first person to have your barrier broken in the original storyline. I'm afraid if I say it too late, it will be too late."
"The main problem is that your plan is too crazy. Once a lot of resources are spent on such a plan, it is very likely that the PDC will impose restrictions on the Wallfacers sooner. You didn't miss the Wallfacer hearing last time, and the attitude of your country's representative clearly showed that they had simply regarded the Wallfacers as a tool."
“That’s true.” Taylor let out a long sigh.
"Actually, I'm quite grateful to you. At least giving up the Wallfacer status is a kind of relief. A few days ago, I even submitted an application to the PDC to bring my family to live with us. When I was Minister of Defense, I was always busy with work and didn't have time to spend with them properly. Lin, this is all thanks to you."
Upon hearing this, Lin Xuan's lips twitched.
"You should avoid learning Chinese from Luo Ji in the future. That word doesn't have a good meaning. You should say 'thank you for being there.'"
Taylor shook his head.
"No, that's exactly what I mean. Since coming here, I've found that I've actually developed a bit of anticipation for your next move. I was really looking forward to seeing who your next person to break through would be. And now you're telling me that you're not breaking through anymore because they're still valuable to you. That sounds really hurtful."
Taylor handed a bottle of liquor to Lin Xuan.
“Sai came by once before, and she brought this wine. Ever since she stepped down as the rotating chair of the PDC, she seems much more relaxed. I asked her, ‘Why are you so relaxed? The threat from the Trisolaran world is still hanging over our heads like the Sword of Damocles.’ Guess what she said?”
She said, "We have done what we can. We don't seek success, but only to have a clear conscience."
Lin Xuan nodded slightly.
"That's great. No wonder you seem to be in much better spirits than before. I was even thinking of letting you try out the new gadget I made."
Taylor took a big gulp of liquor. The spiciness made him frown, but the stimulation made him feel like he was back in the early days of his military service.
"Wow, you actually managed to build it. I thought the PDC wouldn't agree to you spending so many resources to build a database."
"The PDC's reduction of the Wallfacers' rights is faster than I expected. As far as I know, they have already stopped allowing Radiaz to continue conducting hydrogen bomb experiments on Earth. Until the space elevator technology is completed, Radiaz can only conduct data simulations of explosion models."
Lin Xuan didn't actually know how to fish, but Taylor still got him a fishing set, just so he could accompany him to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
"As you can see, human resources are finite. Even if controlled nuclear fusion technology is eventually completed, it will still take several decades to achieve the engineering of converting other types of energy."
"By then, everything will have to change. Airplanes, cars, ships, and all energy-intensive machinery will have to be completely overhauled and redesigned in order to match the converted energy."
Taylor stated a fact.
"As humans adapt to this new technology and transform their industrial systems, they will also consume a lot of resources."
This was actually a harbinger of the subsequent "great downturn" era.
In the original storyline, in order to create more space forces and defense facilities in Earth's orbit, humanity extensively damaged the Earth's environment, leading to severe desertification and making it impossible to grow food.
After all, the biggest problem facing humanity is the Trisolaran fleet. What good is environmental protection in their eyes? You protect Earth so well, but in the end, won't you still have to give it to the Trisolarans?
Even in the end, proposing ideas about environmental protection was labeled as being a traitor to the ETO, making the political situation quite tense.
The direct consequence of this was that before the space force was even built, people almost starved to death.
This period of history is known as the "Great Depression".
Taylor, as expected of a Wallfacer, foresaw this situation that humanity would face several years in advance.
"Yes, I will be in charge of following up on this matter, so the process won't be too slow. As for the space elevator project, Wang Miao has already submitted more than a dozen feasibility plans to the PDC. Construction of the space elevator should begin after next year."
Lin Xuan eventually gave up on the idea of fishing. His fishing rod seemed to have plunged into a dark universe, and after waiting for a long time, there was still no response.
"What are you going to do?"
This is Lin Xuan asking Taylor, because in the original storyline, Taylor had already shot himself at this point, so Lin Xuan didn't know what he would do if he were alive.
"As for me? My plan is to spend my old age here peacefully."
"However, I feel that the PDC will not agree. They have roughly figured it out by now. I have stopped the Wallfacer Project, but my existence is the best explanation to the public."
Taylor took out a tablet, swiped the screen a few times, and brought up a movie poster.
That was the image of Taylor standing atop the building, wearing an exoskeleton suit.
"Hey, Marvel's superhero series, they asked me to film it. I also participated in some variety show interviews a few months ago. Lin, you have no idea, my popularity on the Internet is ridiculously high right now. There were even people who voted for me to run for president in the next election."
Lin Xuan immediately smiled.
"I thought that among us Wallfacers, Luo Ji was the most likely to be the one to do this kind of thing, but I didn't expect it to be you."
Life is tough, Taylor has to make a living by performing.
Taylor was a little embarrassed.
"This is my way of contributing to the Wallfacer Project. You know, about a third of the fees I receive from these commercial performances go to PDC as funding for the Wallfacer Project."
Taylor seemed to have thought of something, and then suddenly changed the subject.
"Oh, by the way, you might have been busy with other things lately and haven't been paying much attention to the news. PDC has launched a project called 'Project Stars' to raise more funds."
"Damn it, they're really old capitalists. They actually came up with such an outrageous operation. You can buy the ownership of a star for a few million in an auction, and you might never even be able to set foot on that star in your lifetime. It's like they picked up the money for free."
"At first, not many people bought it, after all, no one is stupid. But PDC said it was to deal with the Three-Body problem fundraising project, and everyone felt like they were being morally blackmailed. It would be unreasonable not to raise some money to buy one."
Lin Xuan smiled.
"Isn't this a good thing? At least it can alleviate some of the economic pressure within the PDC."
Taylor shook his head.
"It's just a drop in the ocean; that little bit of money isn't even enough for Luo Ji to spend in a day."
Lin Xuan was taken aback.
"By the way, what has Luo Ji been up to lately? I haven't seen him around."
"Well, ever since his wife got pregnant, the two of them have been traveling all over the world. I heard from the PDC staff that they apparently went to the Louvre to see an art exhibition. If we're talking about who's least affected by the Three-Body Crisis, it should be Dr. Luo Ji."
Lin Xuan nodded slightly.
This is consistent with the original plot.
"Well, since Luo Ji isn't here, I'll take my leave now. Mr. Taylor is welcome to visit China sometime."
Lin Xuan stood up and beckoned to Zhang Xiang, who was in the distance, to arrange a helicopter for her to return to the Red Coast Third Base.
Crisis Era 4, April.
PDC finally approved the feasibility study for the space elevator submitted by Wang Miao, and the space elevator project was officially launched.
The initial three space elevators were planned to be built on the equator, which would have made the construction much easier.
Wang Miao estimates that the first batch of space elevators can only reach a height of around low Earth orbit. Therefore, these three space elevators will be mainly used for experiments, and their carrying capacity will be slightly reduced.
However, just completing the base of these three space elevators will take at least three years.
Along with the space elevator project, a resolution was also approved by the PDC.
