Return to before death

Chapter 55 A Human-like Dog

"Yes, it's at my house." Ye Ting nodded slightly. "If you need it, I can bring it to you here tomorrow morning."

The first half of her sentence was addressed to Yan Ran, but the second half was addressed to both of them.

She had seen through Yan Ran shortly after they met, but she couldn't say she trusted her completely.

Everything has two extremes. The fact that something is so easy to see through only makes people more suspicious. It's either really as it appears on the surface, or it's something that's hidden very well.

If it's the former, then Zhang Xinyi's incident has nothing to do with her at all; if it's the latter, then it's uncertain.

Moreover, Zong Zhengqing is the key person in this incident and Yan Ran's husband. Without something that Ye Ting can absolutely believe, she won't easily trust someone.

Sheng Xuanling had already persuaded her beforehand.

Therefore, she was more willing to believe Sheng Xuanling than Yan Ran.

"Then we'll meet here on time tomorrow. Don't wait up." As she said this, Sheng Xuanling glanced at Yan Ran almost imperceptibly, clearly indicating that she was speaking to her.

After Ye Ting left, Yan Ran sat opposite Sheng Xuanling, propping her head up with her hand and staring at him.

Sheng Xuanling turned her face away, but her burning gaze remained fixed on him.

"What are you looking at?" he couldn't help but ask. He should have left with Ye Ting after she left, since he still had a lot of things to finish.

But seeing that she showed no sign of leaving, I inexplicably stayed.

That's why the awkward scene that followed happened.

"You think you're handsome? Do you believe that?" Yan Ran rolled her eyes and blurted out a casual remark.

"I believe you." A single word escaped Sheng Xuanling's lips, his eyes crinkling slightly. "Because I'm handsome."

Yan Ran paused for a second, carefully examining the man in front of her, unable to tell whether he was being sarcastic or joking.

His sharply defined features and the cold aura he exuded made him seem unapproachable.

Moreover, he's wealthy, which certainly aligns with the aesthetic standards of modern women, making him the ideal husband candidate.

Unfortunately, she had no interest in this type of girl and even deeply despised it.

Just because he's good-looking and has power and influence, does that mean he can seduce women everywhere? Aren't women human beings and deserve to be abandoned?

"Looks like a hypocrite." She muttered under her breath, naturally not daring to let him hear. If he found out she was talking about him like that, the two of them would probably start arguing again, endlessly.

But Sheng Xuanling was a remarkable person, and her voice wasn't particularly soft, so he heard all four words but remained expressionless.

What are you muttering about all by yourself?

"I'm wondering if what Ye Ting just said is credible." Yan Ran's eyes darted around, and she quickly changed the subject.

As expected, Sheng Xuanling's expression returned to normal, and there was no longer any teasing in her. "You mean, she's untrustworthy?"

So she thinks the people he found are untrustworthy? She doubts his abilities?

That makes sense. If you can completely trust someone after less than an hour of contact, you're either naive or foolish.

It's obvious that Yan Ran is not a simple or foolish woman.

"We'll know tomorrow." Yan Ran ended the conversation with a single sentence, stood up, and said, "I have something to do, so I'll head back first and not disturb President Sheng's interest."

The second half of the sentence was emphasized particularly heavily, and the two would start arguing again at the slightest disagreement, which seemed to have become their daily routine.

The next day, at the same time, Yan Ran was playing with her phone, her eyes unconsciously glancing at the time. It was exactly ten o'clock. They had agreed not to wait for those who were late, but no one had come.

She tapped her fingers lightly on the table, wondering whether she should leave or stay and continue waiting.

She looked at the darkened phone screen, her brows furrowing in displeasure. What was going on with them?

Her phone suddenly lit up, and she quickly looked down. It was a text message from Sheng Xuanling.

"Come to Mufeng Garden immediately."

He simply gave her the address, without giving any reason—it was indeed his usual tone.

She didn't reply, picked up her bag, and walked slowly towards the door, hailing a taxi at random.

"Miss, where are we going?"

"Mufeng Garden".

She leaned back in her chair, looking tired, and rubbed her temples as her body gradually relaxed.

"Oh dear, wasn't there just a murder at Mufeng Garden? Do you live there?"

The driver slapped his forehead, as if remembering something, and turned to look at her with a puzzled expression.

"No, just get there. If you don't want to drive in, you can park outside." Yan Ran didn't even look up, her voice was soft, almost inaudible if you didn't listen carefully.

The driver stopped talking and quietly drove his car.

For taxi drivers like them, the worst thing to do is talk too much. They could easily offend some important person with a careless remark and bring about their downfall.

And since he was the kind of person who couldn't keep quiet, and Yan Ran's meaning was already very clear, he naturally didn't dare to say anything more.

They traveled in silence. As Yan Ran watched the scenery outside the window recede into the distance, she inexplicably thought of Zong Zhengqing, and a pang of sadness welled up in her heart.

She almost risked her own life to save him, and even lost Tangtang's life in the process, but he did nothing.

Tangtang died because of him! How could he be so heartless!

A mist rose before her eyes, her nose stung, and she gently closed her eyes. Tears silently slid down her cheeks, dripping into her collar, feeling cool.

"Miss, here we are."

After an unknown amount of time, the driver's voice appeared in Yan Ran's ears again.

After walking quite a distance, she realized that Sheng Xuanling hadn't given her the exact address, only telling her to come to Mufeng Garden.

But Mufeng Garden is a medium-sized residential community with countless residents.

If we keep searching like this, we might not find them even by nightfall.

Yan Ran picked up her phone to make a call and ask, but Sheng Xuanling appeared in her line of sight. She put down her phone and followed after him.

"You called me here because it's related to the person who died here?" She grabbed his hand, breathing heavily.

He acted as if he hadn't seen her at all. If she hadn't realized something was wrong and quickened her pace, she might not have been able to catch up.

Yan Ran's gaze unconsciously swept downwards; those legs were so long, no wonder she walked so fast.

She looked at her legs again; they weren't particularly short, so why couldn't she catch up? She had to jog to barely keep up.

"Ye Ting lives here."

His eyes revealed no emotion; he simply stared at her coldly.

Yan Ran felt like the two of them were strangers meeting for the first time, asking each other's names, and then never speaking again.

However, the thought only flashed through her mind, and she immediately grasped the key point in the words.

Ye Ting lives here? And someone just died here. Could it be that the person who died was Ye Ting?
