Return to before death

Chapter 50 Assembly Line

Yan Ran squatted down and gently coaxed him. Since he had mistaken her for Zhang Xinyi, she might as well play along and perhaps get some information out of him.

"I don't know what that bastard injected you with, I thought I'd never see you again." The man glanced at Yan Ran cautiously, then immediately lowered his head, like a child who had done something wrong.

"It's okay, I'm here, aren't I?" Yan Ran gently patted his head, patiently comforting him, "You'll feel better after a good night's sleep, I'll stay with you."

The man obediently closed his eyes, a lingering smile on his lips.

Yan Ran stood up, her eyes regaining their previous indifference.

"Is there something wrong with the hospital? Are they guinea pigs?" she murmured softly. Qin Zhiyuan, who was standing beside her, carefully noted her words. If what this man said was true, then the entire hospital involved was probably like an assembly line.

While he was still deep in thought, Yan Ran had already quietly left. This was within the jurisdiction of the police, and her involvement would easily arouse suspicion, even though she had once considered taking action in this direction.

The phone rang at that moment, and she glanced at it; it was Yu Xiao.

With four or five missed calls already on her phone, Yu Xiao must be extremely worried, knowing she left without even saying goodbye.

A rare gentle smile appeared on his face as he answered the phone.

"Ranran, why didn't you answer my calls? Do you know how worried I was? You brat, we're not done yet, why are you leaving? What if you get kidnapped? Where am I supposed to find you? And what exactly is your relationship with Sheng Xuanling? Your relationship is definitely not that simple. You need to explain it to me clearly."

Before Yan Ran could even speak, Yu Xiao rattled off a string of words, giving her no chance to reply.

She waited helplessly for Yu Xiao to finish speaking.

"Ranran, are you even listening to me?"

Seeing that Yan Ran hadn't spoken for a long time, Yu Xiao noticed something was wrong and immediately stopped talking, asking worriedly.

"My dear Miss Xiaoxiao, how am I supposed to answer that? Besides, you didn't even give me a chance to answer."

Yan Ran finally managed to speak, only to realize that she had nothing to say.

"I'm fine, I've come to the police station."

All she could tell them was that she was safe and sound; she didn't know what else to say.

"What? The police station? You hit someone?" Unexpectedly, Yu Xiao's tone did not soften but became even more worried. "You've been wronged these past few hours. It's all my fault for not noticing in time. Wait for me a little longer, I'll come and bail you out right away."

Yan Ran found it amusing. Even if someone got into trouble and ended up in the police station, that person wouldn't be her, but Xiao Xiao.

Compared to Xiaoxiao, she was completely outmatched.

In the past, Yu Xiao had been invited to the police station for questioning quite a few times because of fighting, but fortunately, someone always vouched for her, so she has been safe and sound all these years. The longest she has ever stayed in the police station seems to be only a few hours.

"Still laughing! You think you're right to hit someone? Just wait and see how I deal with you later!" Yu Xiao hung up the phone before Yan Ran could even explain.

She could only stand helplessly outside the police station, waiting for Yu Xiao to come over.

If she leaves now, Yu Xiao will definitely not be able to find her, and then she'll start nagging and complaining.

Yu Xiao rushed to the police station, only to find Yan Ran looking around leisurely, not at all like someone who had been to the police station.

She immediately realized what was happening, and her face involuntarily flushed.

This is really embarrassing.

"Xiaoxiao, I've been waiting for you here for a long time." Yan Ran didn't feel embarrassed at all, waved and walked towards Yu Xiao, as if nothing had happened.

Given this, Yu Xiao naturally chose to forget.

"Why are you at the police station?" She couldn't help but ask in a low voice, her curiosity piqued.

"Isn't it like you said? You'll end up in the police station if you hit someone." Yan Ran teased her deliberately, feeling a great sense of accomplishment when she saw her embarrassed expression.

It's rare to see Yu Xiao looking so embarrassed.

"You're not me, how could you be so reckless?" After all these years, if Yu Xiao still didn't know Yan Ran's temperament, then their status as best friends wouldn't be necessary.

So he blurted out a sentence without hesitation, which was exactly what Yan Ran wanted to hear.

"You're slandering me? Defamation is a crime. This happens to be a police station. Xiaoxiao, would you like to go in and take a look?"

"No... let's not, let's go home."

Yan Ran was led home by her arm. The journey was unusually quiet, and the two did not exchange a single word.

Yu Xiao was afraid that if she opened her mouth, she would be teased. She didn't know why, but ever since she got together with Ji Shuhai, she had become particularly thin-skinned.

Yan Ran was thinking about two things: the kidnappers that Zong Zhengqing and Sheng Xuanling had mentioned, but as for him personally, she didn't care at all.

A long time has passed, and there has been no progress on this matter.

Yan Ran's initial anticipation eventually turned into habit.

If we can't find it now, there will always be opportunities in the future.

Sheng Xuanling has not contacted her since that incident, so it seems that she has to find out the truth herself. Yan Ran lowered her head and bit her finger, thinking about the clues in her mind.

Zhang Xinyi's accident happened at the Zong family's hospital, so her death is definitely related to the Zong family. If the attending physician made a mistake, he will certainly be dismissed.

Hospital!

This is the scene of the incident. Did the police only conduct an autopsy and not investigate anything else? Or did they simply not find anything at all?

With this question in mind, she called Qin Zhiyuan. Others didn't know that she was going to divorce Zong Zhengqing, so she was still his wife and it was only natural for her to care about her husband.

"Mrs. Zong, are you here to inquire about the progress of the case again?" Because Yan Ran had been either making phone calls or going to the police station these days, Qin Zhiyuan had become quite familiar with her. His tone carried a hint of teasing, "I really envy President Zong for having a wife like you."

Yan Ran pursed her lips and chuckled softly, neither admitting nor denying it. At the moment, she still needed the identity of Mrs. Zong.

"Haven't there been any progress yet? My heart has been pounding like crazy these past few days, I always feel like something's going to happen." Yan Ran's words were just right, expressing both what she wanted to know and showing that she was a wife who loved her husband and hoped he would be safe and sound.

Qin Zhiyuan paused for a moment, his face turning serious.

"We haven't received any definite information yet, but the investigation is still ongoing. Please rest assured, Mrs. Zong, we will not wrong an innocent person, nor will we let any criminal go unpunished. The body was destroyed during the autopsy, which is enough to make us suspect Mr. Zong. We hope that Mrs. Zong will cooperate with us."

As he spoke, his sharp gaze swept over Yan Ran, seemingly questioning her enthusiasm for the case.
