Return to before death

Chapter 13 Conditions for Time Travel

"I worked as a journalist for a while, and paying attention to details is a professional habit," Yan Ran explained calmly.

"Have you ever thought about what kind of person you are who dares to go against the Sheng family? Do you know how much trouble getting involved in this matter will bring?"

"I... didn't think that much..." Yan Ran was bewildered. She really hadn't considered that much; she simply wanted to bring the murderer to justice.

"I didn't think about it today, but what about when they caught me in the hospital nine years ago?"

"I... it was just instinct."

"Stupid woman."

Sheng Xuanling cursed under his breath, but then he noticed the torn dress on her shoulder, revealing glimpses of her skin beneath the white gauze.

He took off his suit jacket and threw it to Yan Ran, saying, "The Sheng family will be here soon. Put it on if you don't want to lose face."

Soon, the bodyguards arrived with their men. Sheng Xuanling picked out a car, grabbed the driver, and threw Yan Ran into the passenger seat like a chick. "I'll take you home."

"Thank you."

The car ride was silent the entire way.

The car stopped at the gate of the Zong family's residence. Sheng Xuanling's deep eyes gazed at the dark night ahead, and he suddenly spoke, "You must save Zong Zhengqing?"

“He is my husband and my daughter’s father,” Yan Ran said earnestly, word by word. “I love him, and even if there is only a sliver of hope, I will never give up.”

“Sometimes blindly believing in love is foolish.” Sheng Xuanling took off the amulet around her neck and played with it in her hand. “I hope you won’t regret it.”

Yan Ran frowned. What did those words mean?

"When your husband comes back, help me save someone." He reached out, opened Yan Ran's hand, and solemnly placed the amulet in her palm. "That person is also very important to me."

Yan Ran gripped her only hope tightly. "Okay, I agree."

After returning home, Yan Ran quickly took off her evening gown and high heels, changed into casual clothes, sat at her desk, and, just like last time, gripped the amulet tightly, closed her eyes, and softly chanted "May all things be born."

Without any of the expected discomfort, she opened her eyes and saw a desk lamp, a desk, and a talisman in front of her.

Nothing has changed.

What's wrong?

She carefully recalled every detail of her last time traveling through time.

Last time, after she retrieved her husband's belongings, she found this amulet in the box. At that time, there was a transparent bag with the date 2008.10.22 written on it: "Items left at the scene of Sheng Xuanling's death."

It must have fallen into the box when the police station was packing things up, and she mistakenly took it home.

At that moment, she held the amulet, recited the words on it, and was transported back to the scene of her death.

Why?

Why did she not go anywhere else, but instead return to the scene of Sheng Xuanling's death?

Remains!

A thought suddenly flashed through my mind: could it be because of the remnants?

It was because these were relics left at the scene of Sheng Xuanling's death that she returned to the time of his death.

So, does that mean that as long as you carry the items you left behind, you can return to the scene of your death?

Feeling as if she had grasped the key to time travel, Yan Ran was filled with excitement. She hurriedly and absentmindedly dumped all of her husband's belongings onto the table. She grabbed her cufflinks and recited the incantation again, but it was still no use.

It was still the cold and lonely bedroom, still the dark night and the room where he was gone; nothing had changed.

Why on earth!

Yan Ran felt like her heart was about to explode. Was all her scheming going to end up being nothing but a waste of time and effort?

Is this amulet meant for one person only?

So it can only save Sheng Xuanling, and not others?

Disappointment, despair, and pain came crashing down on us. Just when hope appeared, it was shattered by fate.

It would have been better if she hadn't harbored any illusions in the first place, then she could have accepted his departure with peace of mind.

Hot tears fell in large drops. She seemed to have lost all her strength, and she lay face down on the table, her eyes unfocused as she stared at the amulet in front of her.

It was a small, square amulet that originally carried hope, but now it only brought bone-chilling cold.
