These past two days, I've been busy preparing gifts for the children, leaving early and returning late.

Xu Jin seemed to be busy with something, so we didn't see each other much; it was quite peaceful.

Before I knew it, it was the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the Happiness Orphanage. I ate breakfast and took my medicine early and went out.

I bought the gifts for the children at the mall and had the mall staff deliver them to the orphanage immediately.

The orphanage was located in the northern part of the suburbs, a relatively remote area with low prices, making it a suitable place for the orphanage to thrive.

When I arrived at the orphanage, I immediately noticed the things hanging on the outside of the walls, on the trees, and on the fence, and a smile involuntarily crept onto my lips.

Teacher Li Jingtao must have put a lot of thought and effort into doing things with the children.

As soon as I entered the orphanage, I came face to face with Su Jinyun, who was standing in the courtyard.

She stared at me coldly and said sarcastically, "You're here really early. If you had come any later, you could have had lunch."

"It's true that I didn't start as early as you."

I replied gently, which made Su Jinyun roll her eyes in annoyance.

Seeing that things were getting out of hand, Teacher Li Jingtao immediately stepped forward and smiled to ease the atmosphere, "Why do you two still bicker like you did when you were kids?"

"Hmph, I don't care to argue with someone like him."

After saying this in a sarcastic tone, Su Jinyun turned and left.

Soon a group of children surrounded her, smiling and talking to her—

"Sister Jinyun, you look so beautiful today!"

"Sister Jinyun, it's been so long since you've come! Xiaoli has missed you so much!"

"Sister Jinyun, we've prepared a gift for you!"

……

Under the barrage of questions from a group of children, Su Jinyun quickly forgot the unpleasantness that had just occurred and blended into the group of children.

What gift did you prepare for me?

"Sister Jinyun, can you guess?"

One of the children looked at Su Jinyun innocently, his big eyes blinking, and Su Jinyun's heart softened at the sight.

Just then, Li Jingtao's gentle voice rang in my ears, interrupting my attention.

"Nan Chen, are you sick? You look terrible."

I was slightly taken aback, clearly not expecting him to ask that question suddenly.

After I came to my senses, I gently shook my head and denied it. "I'm not sick. It's probably because I've been busy lately and haven't been getting enough rest, so I don't look well."

"If you're busy, give yourself more rest and don't push yourself too hard."

After speaking gently, Li Jingtao clapped his hands vigorously at the group of children surrounding Su Jinyun not far away, "Children, do you remember the gifts we prepared for Sister Jinyun and Brother Nanchen?"

"remember."

"Of course we remember."

The children's voices answered in a lively and energetic manner.

Li Jingtao said with a smile, "Then let me hurry up and take out the gift now, otherwise Brother Nanchen and Sister Jinyun will get anxious."

"it is good."

The children happily echoed this sentiment before scattering and running into the room.

Soon, the slightly older children came out carrying a birthday cake, saying, "Happy birthday, Brother Nanchen!"

When I heard this, I froze on the spot, never expecting them to give me such a surprise.

Before I could react, Su Jinyun and I were surrounded by two groups of children, who were smiling and handing us all sorts of handmade gifts.

"Brother Nanchen, look at the gift I made for you!"

"Brother Nanchen, I made a birthday card, and it even includes a picture of our orphanage!"

"Sister Jinyun, don't be disappointed, you have a gift too! I folded a whole bottle of little stars for you."

"I made a bracelet for Sister Jinyun, look!"

My heart warmed, and I reached out to pat the head of this child, then the head of that child. "Thank you, children. I really like the gifts you gave me."

As soon as I finished speaking, Su Jinyun's happy voice rang out from not far away—

"Children, you are so kind to me, you have prepared so many gifts for me."

Li Jingtao watched everything unfold gently, then suddenly turned to me and said, "Nan Chen, many years have passed since then. You should let it go."

"How can you break free from your shackles if you don't let go of the past?"

Upon hearing this, I tightened my grip on the gift slightly, opened my mouth as if to speak, but didn't know what to say.

Many years ago, on my birthday, my teacher, Lin Wanruo, died to save me.

She could have had a brilliant and wonderful life, all because of me. Otherwise, she would be a very popular teacher now.

How can I forgive myself for this?

Li Jingtao reached out and gently patted my shoulder. "That wasn't your fault. It was Wanruo's choice. You're lucky to have survived. It's what Wanruo truly wanted to see."

"For so many years, you have secretly provided so much help to our orphanage. It's really unnecessary to trap yourself and blame yourself for the past over and over again."

"We should all look forward and make the future even brighter."

I gripped the gift tightly, but loosened my grip slightly upon hearing those words.

Suddenly, I couldn't help but ask, "Professor Jingtao, don't you hate me?"

Li Jingtao was taken aback when he heard this, as if he hadn't expected me to ask so bluntly.

He gave a bitter smile, looked up at the sky not far away, and his voice suddenly became very low, full of sorrow.

“At first I hated you. I was in unbearable pain because my lover died to save you. I wish my lover could have been more ruthless and selfish, so that she might still be alive.”

"Then one day, I dreamed about her."

“She gently touched my face, smiling brightly, just like I remembered. She said, Jingtao, the children are innocent. They didn’t want that to happen either. They wanted me to live. You can’t blame the children.”

"Saving them was my own choice. I hope they can have a brighter and better future, so please don't hate them, okay? Because I also hope you can live well, live well in my place, and help more children."

When Teacher Li Jingtao got to this point, his eyes reddened slightly, and he gently wiped away the tears in his eyes. "After that dream, I started preparing to open this orphanage. I saved many children. When I see the children's innocent smiles, it's like seeing her standing next to me smiling."

"Nan Chen, Wanru is truly a wonderful girl. She deserves my lifelong remembrance."

I was horrified, but nodded in agreement.

"Yes, Teacher Wanru is a very good teacher. If it weren't for her, Jinyun and I wouldn't be where we are today."

Later, Su Jinyun and I received all sorts of gifts from the children, and we went into the room together. We laughed and joked together, and cut the cake together.

I smiled as I accepted the cake from one of the children, and exclaimed, "Thank you, kids! This has been the happiest birthday I've ever had!"

"You're welcome!"

The children answered me in unison, their faces beaming with smiles.

After taking a bite of the cream cake, I couldn't suppress the churning in my stomach, so I forced myself to turn to Teacher Li Jingtao and say, "You guys play first, I'm going to the restroom."

"Go."

Li Jingtao said something kind and friendly, and then continued playing with the children.

I rushed to the bathroom and dry-heaved over the toilet.

After a while, I weakly supported myself and walked out of the bathroom.

"Are you OK?"
