Chapter 53 A Song of Different Paths Leading to the Same Destination

When Shiho Miyano saw Vodka hang up the phone with a stiff expression, her heart sank. She guessed that something might have happened to Gin as well, which would make their situation even more dangerous.

"How are you?" Shiho Miyano asked gravely. She lowered the gun and flexed her wrist. The recoil from the bullets had left her hand slightly numb. They were now almost at the seaside, but a deep trench carved out by the freshwater river flowing into the ocean blocked their escape route. If this continued, they might soon find themselves with nowhere to go.

Vodka's current thoughts are as follows: Su Dai is vague about the purpose of coming here + Gin has something important to do but did not tell him the details + the two of them are together now → the two of them are going to carry out a mission together and keeping it from him.

Huh? Huh? Does that mean I'm no longer the eldest brother's most trusted subordinate?

Seeing Vodka remain silent, Shiho Miyano's sense of foreboding intensified, and she raised her voice, asking again, "Vodka, what did Gin say?"

"Huh? Oh, oh." Vodka finally snapped out of his daze. "Big Brother is with Su Dai, Su Dai said they'll be here soon..."

Having received a definite answer, Shiho Miyano stopped worrying about why Vodka had looked so grief-stricken. She leaned against a tree, using it as cover to fire at the crowd. The dim light made it difficult to hit their targets, especially since they had been alive just moments before… Shiho's gun, originally aimed at Kimie Shimabukuro's forehead, veered slightly, the bullet grazing her ankle and causing her to stumble and fall to the ground.

The two struggled on like this until they ran out of bullets and were forced to the cliff by the sea.

Shiho Miyano slumped down, lowering her gun. She turned to look back; the biting sea wind ruffled her clothes and lifted her brown bangs, revealing weary eyes. The rocks beneath her feet were slippery and cold, and behind them lay a cliff about ten meters high. The scene below was indistinct in the night; only the sound of crashing waves against the precipice, causing rocks and gravel to fall, could be heard. It seemed as if, at any moment, the entire cliff would be torn apart by the raging ocean.

"Do you want to jump?" Shiho Miyano asked Vodka, trying to keep her voice calm.

Both of them knew that below were raging waves, perhaps filled with hidden reefs, and that jumping in would mean certain death. However, the mutated humans were only a few feet away from them, and some were already rushing towards them on all fours.

When Akihara and Gin arrived, this was the scene they witnessed.

It was too late. They were too far away, probably nearly a hundred meters, and their voices were drowned out by the sound of the tide. How could they... save them? Meanwhile, their situation was also dire; a vast swarm of sea creatures was closing in from behind.

Gin stopped, raised his gun, and pointed it at the edge of the cliff. This time, Akihara didn't stop him. The little Kaiji in his arms struggled violently, waving its tentacles as if trying to tell Akihara something. Akihara squatted down and put the little Kaiji on the ground.

It drooped its tentacles in frustration. Although he couldn't understand what it meant, Akihara chuckled and patted Little Hai Si's head. "Tell me what you want to say later."

Meanwhile, Gin's finger was already silently on the trigger. The sky was pitch black, the sea wind howled fiercely, and the distance seemed impossibly vast. Either of these factors would be fatal distractions for the shooter.

However, in the darkness at the edge of the cliff, a beam of light suddenly shone. It was Vodka; he noticed the approaching swarm of sea creatures in the distance and, consequently, Gin not far away. He quickly turned on his phone's flashlight; the light was dim, but enough to point Gin to his target.

Gin didn't hesitate any longer. He pulled the trigger, the hammer struck the primer of the bullet, and flames burst forth, propelling the bullet whistling through the barrel. It flew nearly a hundred meters away, and the ensuing gunshot instantly drowned out all other sounds. "Bang—" The crazed human who had rushed towards Vodka and his group convulsed and fell to the ground. Beretta's bullet had struck him squarely in the temple. He struggled a few times and then fell still.

Just as Gin was about to fire his second shot, a sudden change occurred. A faint, ethereal chant seemed to come from the distant seabed, causing everyone present who was of sound mind to have a strange feeling: if mermaids really existed in this world, then their singing must be like this.

All living things froze in that instant, including the humans who had been frantically chasing after them, and the pursuing sea monsters. Shiho Miyano suddenly found herself able to see the monsters' exact features and every detail, even the deep furrows in the cliff face and the tiny crabs, no bigger than fingernails, scurrying past. A silvery light silently streamed down, illuminating every tiny corner, making everything impossible to hide, revealing every minute detail.

Shiho Miyano looked up, and there it was… the moon? The sky, which had been shrouded in thick, dark clouds, was now torn open by the moonlight. Then the crack grew wider and wider, and the dark clouds, along with the darkness on the ground, were driven away, and the moon rose. The moon was solemn and bright, silently overlooking the farce unfolding on earth.

Shiho Miyano thought she must be seeing things, otherwise how could she see two moons in the sky?

Bathed in moonlight, the sea shimmered, blurring the horizon where sky met sea. Suddenly, a colossal black shadow leaped from the surface, its form resembling an ancient mosasaur lingering in mid-air for a moment before submerging again. Even a fleeting glimpse was enough to inspire awe and trepidation, as if gazing upon a god.

“…Ishar-mla…” the humanoid Kaiji, who had once been the human Takenaka Koichi, murmured. The shock in his eyes faded for a moment, followed by fanatical devotion.

Gin was the first to react. He didn't know what new anomaly had occurred, but he knew this was a good opportunity. He wanted to take advantage of everyone's attention being drawn to the strange phenomenon to get closer to the cliff edge. However, someone beat Gin to it and brushed past him.

It was Su Dai… yet it didn't seem like Su Dai. At this moment, under the silvery glow of the twin moons, his hair seemed to be dyed silver-white by the moonlight, cascading down his shoulders. His facial features had become softer, his features more handsome and androgynous. And his eyes, which had somehow changed from their original black to a dark red, were now completely different.

As Gin fired, Akihara stood up, popped a few more spicy candies into his mouth, and then pieced together all his points, along with the 20% off card, to finally redeem the ability of his first six-star operator since arriving in this world.

Turbid Heart Skadi.
