Transmigrated into Conan, his ability is Rhodes Island
Chapter 33 Crisis
The main hall of the dojo was bustling with activity, people coming and going, clinking glasses and exchanging toasts. The swords that the dojo had always had still hung on the walls, along with a plaque bearing the Chinese character "道" (Tao) in the center of the hall. The rest of the hall had been cleaned up, and there was a long table covered with a red velvet cloth on the side, with some champagne and snacks, giving it the feel of a banquet hall.
Akihara carefully dodged those who bumped into him, scrutinizing the faces of passersby while searching for an inner room that might hold secrets. He found nothing of the inner room, but spotted his target, Yamamoto Kazuo, standing not far away. His face was gloomy, his eyes sunken, and while not particularly burly, his muscles were well-defined, befitting his position as the leader of the Kawasaki gang. He was chatting with a fat man in a suit beside him, occasionally letting out a sinister smile.
Akihara looked away. Killing such a notorious yakuza boss was no big deal for him, but he had to leave it for last in the mission. Otherwise, if it caused a commotion, it would be difficult for him and Amuro Tooru to gather clues.
He picked up a few snacks and popped them into his mouth, then strolled leisurely to the back of the hall, where a corridor connected to the backyard. The old corridor was eerie, but fortunately, guards were stationed every now and then, and the presence of people diluted the ghostly aura. Of course, the word "fortunately" was only for tourists who actually came to enjoy the scenery; for an uninvited intruder like him, it was certainly not a good thing.
Akihara peered down the corridor, where a heavy, dark wooden door stood at the end. Above the door was a plaque identical to the one in the main hall, inscribed with the words "Ichigo Ichie" (一期一会). A small wooden sign next to it thoughtfully indicated that the room's name was "Meditation Room" (陽夢間). Judging from the level of dust on the floor below the door, it was frequently opened and people were constantly going in and out. However, a thick iron chain, as thick as a baby's arm, was now hanging above it, securely locked with an old-fashioned padlock. Such tight security was hard not to arouse suspicion.
The backyard was bathed in sunlight, filled with birdsong and the chorus of insects. To a person with low emotional intelligence, this place was overgrown with weeds and dilapidated; even after renovation, it would only be a facade of grandeur masking underlying decay. To a person with high emotional intelligence, however, it was about connecting with nature and preserving its original, natural state. Qiuyuan glanced again at the security personnel standing guard on both sides of the corridor, then quietly entered the backyard. He spotted a cicada chirping merrily on a small boxwood leaf and caught it with one hand. The cicada began to struggle restlessly, emitting a pitiful cry. Qiuyuan pinched its wings, forcing it to quiet down.
This time, having learned from his earlier mistake of having his floating dumpling seen by the waiter, he made sure to blend the cicada's color into the environment. He then went back down the corridor, found the guard furthest from the door, and gently pulled open his collar—throwing the struggling cicada inside.
The system covered its face, feigning disbelief. "Snatch the bamboo shoots! Even the iron-eating beasts have nothing to eat!"
The guard screamed and dropped his gun as if he'd been electrocuted, then started performing a "street dance" routine on the spot. The other guards who were standing in the corridor, seeing this, thought something was wrong and rushed over to help.
Akihara thoughtfully pulled up Ethan's yo-yo string 20 centimeters off the ground. In an instant, the people who rushed over to help were all knocked over. The cicadas' mournful chirping was not even as loud as the noise they made.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Akihara approached the wooden door, took out a box of matches he had taken from the kitchen, crushed the red part of the match head and stuffed it into the keyhole, then struck a match and held the flame toward the keyhole.
A soft popping sound rang out, but it was drowned out by the noise behind her. Akihara leisurely removed the padlock, lowered the chain, and slipped inside.
……
Amuro Tooru's situation wasn't as smooth as Akihara's. Unlike the other guy who lacked martial ethics, without the support of supernatural abilities, he could only try to minimize his presence as he moved through the hall full of guests toward the back corridor.
However, his outstanding appearance could not be concealed by simple disguise and a pair of sunglasses. He had not taken two steps when he was stopped by an elegantly dressed middle-aged woman.
Amuro Toru lowered his head slightly to look at the face of the woman opposite him, who was slightly shorter than him. She had a typical Eastern face, with well-proportioned bones and soft facial features, but her eyes could not hide her ruthlessness. Those eyes seemed to be able to see into people's hearts... He quickly searched his mind for this person and suddenly remembered a piece of information he had seen when he was still in police academy.
The only female leader among Japan's major gangs... She has been in power since the early 90s, and may have referred to herself as the "Godmother" due to the impact of foreign culture...
When he thought of this title, he felt no sense of mockery, because in the Japanese underworld, women are often marginalized. Even the wives and daughters of gang members only receive slightly better treatment than servants. In such an environment, becoming the head of a major gang requires not only extraordinary courage but also ruthless methods. It seems he needs to be careful.
Thinking of this, Amuro Tooru quickly put on a polite and respectful smile and greeted the person who stopped him before they could speak.
……
Akihara slipped into the inner room and temporarily deactivated his optical invisibility.
He began to look around the small room. The wooden floorboards creaked as he walked, and a red rug, perhaps made of wool, was spread on it. The room was dimly lit and flickering, kept illuminated by a few still-burning candles. Judging from the thickness of the candles and the length of their burnt-out sections, they had probably been lit about 30 minutes earlier.
It seems the previous person hasn't been gone for very long? Could that person be Yamamoto Kazuo? Thirty minutes ago... around the time I first infiltrated, I wonder if Morofushi Kagemitsu saw when the target, Yamamoto, entered the hall.
He didn't dwell on the question for long. He continued to peer into the room, following the light. The candles providing the light were neatly arranged on either side of a table deep inside. Upon closer inspection, the table appeared to be an altar. In the center of the table was a mirror facing the entrance, giving it a strong religious feel.
Based on Akihara's usual understanding and the stories told to him by Operator Suzuran, the mirror, the jewel, and the sword are the three most famous sacred treasures in Japan, representing the legendary Yata no Kagami, Yasakani no Magatama, and Kusanagi no Tsurugi. The Japanese believe that the very act of a mirror reflecting people and objects signifies its mystique and magic, hence the many beliefs and legends surrounding mirrors, saying they can bring good fortune, reflect the human heart, expose the nature of demons, and foresee life, death, fortune, and misfortune.
He picked up the mirror and examined it closely. It was indeed a low-magic, materialistic world. The image he had briefly conjured seemed completely unrelated to this ordinary mirror. The only difference from typical bronze mirrors was the pattern on the back—it resembled two mermaids. Calling them mermaids was a bit of an exaggeration; they were more accurately described as fish-men or fish monsters. After confirming there was nothing special about the mirror, Qiu Yuan casually put it back.
The most eye-catching element in this room is undoubtedly the impressive screen behind the altar. The screen appears quite ancient, its paint somewhat faded, its overall color yellowish—though this could also be due to the candlelight. Painted in the style of ukiyo-e, the screen depicts a turbulent sea, and atop the blue and white waves stands a white-haired woman in neon-colored classical clothing. Her face is turned to the side, and unlike the gentle, alluring expressions of women in typical ukiyo-e works, her expression is sacred and solemn, yet perhaps due to the lighting, it also appears somewhat eerie. Beside her, various fish peek out from the surface, seemingly following this sea goddess-like woman.
The system followed his gaze, examining the ukiyo-e print. The somber lighting, the eerie imagery, and the room's unusual soundproofing made even this silicon-based being uneasy. Seeing Akihara staring at the screen in silence, it nudged him. "What's wrong? Is there something wrong with this painting?"
Akihara lowered his hand, which had been habitually resting on his chin as he pondered, and his deliberately lowered voice echoed in the small space. "I have a guess, but I hope it's not true... Rather than that, let's see if there are any other clues." After saying this, he went around to the back of the screen, which was separated from the wall by only a thin line, leaving a narrow gap for one person to pass through. The screen almost completely blocked out the candlelight, so he could only grope along the wall in the darkness.
"Ah, just as I thought." As he touched it, he suddenly let out a soft exclamation. The wooden wall was made into a hinge, and as he pulled it outward with his fingertips, the hidden compartment opened, revealing a safe buried deep in the wall.
"Great! Quickly take what's hidden inside, then let's leave as soon as possible!" The system hesitated for a moment before finally expressing its feelings. "This place gives me a very bad feeling..."
“Okay.” Qiu Yuan readily agreed. “All you have to do is perform a telekinetic retrieval and store the contents into your system space, and the first step of our mission will be successfully completed.”
The system responded with a string of dots, expressing its exasperation: "That function doesn't exist! Only items that your body can touch can be stored in the system space!"
"Then let's just take this safe with us. I remember Bourbon is quite good at picking locks."
The system reluctantly removed the safe from the wall and put it into its own space. As a result, Qiuyuan suddenly stopped his action of preparing to disappear and push the door open again. Instead, he bent down and pressed his ear against the door to listen to the sounds outside. His reliable appearance just now disappeared instantly, and the corners of his mouth curled up again, revealing a happy expression.
"We're not leaving yet, we're waiting for someone." Then, as if on a whim, he asked the system to take out the safe again, and started fiddling with the safe's lock with a matchstick.
So when Bourbon finally broke free from the "godmother's" enthusiastic invitation, and after luring away the guards at the door, he finally pushed open the door to the meditation room and saw Akihara sitting on the floor, holding a square iron lump in his arms, and hammering on the iron lump by candlelight.
Akihara looked up, raised an eyebrow, and greeted Amuro Tooru, whose expression was momentarily filled with surprise and uncertainty.
"Bourbon, you're finally here! Why were you so slow? Did you run into some rich woman on the way who wanted to keep you as a gigolo?"
Amuro Tooru: It's hard now, my fists are hard.
He took a deep breath, trying to ignore Su Dai's provocation—Akihara was absolutely right. He had been so worried about that "godmother" just now, but after their conversation, the "godmother" implied that she wanted Amuro Tooru to switch sides from the Yakuza group and join her, promising him endless wealth and luxury. Amuro Tooru was speechless, but he couldn't show it on his face. After several maneuvers, he finally managed to shake her off and reach the backyard corridor.
Distracting the guards was a piece of cake for him. He was still wary of someone inside because of the half-locked door, when he pushed it open and saw this guy who had been slacking off and leaving from the start. Could someone tell him why Su Dai just swaggered into the finish line like he'd been waiting for him for ages?
He looked Akihara up and down, making sure the man wasn't pretending, and his tone was full of disbelief. "How did you manage to sneak in?"
Akihara gave him a shushing gesture. "A secret makes a man man." He decided to say this before Vermouth, so that he could claim the patent on the phrase. "Anyway, Bourbon, here you go." He pointed to the safe he had been fiddling with for a while.
Amuro Tooru, who hadn't expected Su Dai to confess honestly anyway, was successfully diverted from the conversation. He squatted down, quickly assessed the type of the old-fashioned safe, took a wire from his pocket, and began fiddling with the keyhole while turning the dial with one hand and listening to the sounds.
With a crisp "click," the safe door was easily opened.
The system in Qiu Yuan's mind scolded him with great pain: "Look at Bourbon, and then look at you!"
However, Akihara, the one being disliked, was plotting in his mind how to get Bourbon to voluntarily join Rhodes Island.
System: ...I thought you had forgotten this setting.
Amuro Tooru took out a thin brown paper file folder from the safe. He didn't open it immediately, but rummaged around inside for a moment. This time, he took out a seashell-shaped object.
"What is this, a craft?" Amuro Tooru asked.
"Let's see what's in the file folder first." Akihara's smile gradually faded, and that unpleasant suspicion lingered in his mind.
Amuro Tooru didn't delay any longer. He opened the file folder, inside which was a yellowed page that looked as if it would crumble at the slightest touch. He glanced at it and frowned, saying, "It's all Chinese characters; it's hard to understand when they're connected. Perhaps we should continue with the mission for now and discuss it further back at the organization..."
Akihara interrupted the other person, took the paper, and slowly read the words on it in Chinese: "In the distant continent of mermaids, there are creatures resembling fish, their bodies covered in hard shells, wielding soft appendages. They move slowly, lacking intelligence, yet their severed limbs can regenerate, their tenacity in life is remarkable. Some people eat their flesh, gaining some of their characteristics, making their bodies stronger, their limbs more powerful, and their regenerative abilities improved. The natives call them children of the sea, considering it a gift from the ocean." As he uttered each word, his expression grew increasingly solemn.
Amuro Tooru was completely confused, but judging from Akihara's expression, he knew something was wrong. "So, what does this mean?"
"It means there's an aquatic creature that can grant people extremely strong regenerative abilities when eaten, called 'Child of the Sea'," Akihara translated briefly.
As he said this, Amuro Tooru felt a blur before his eyes, and before he knew it, a transparent ampoule had appeared in Akihara's right hand.
At this moment, Akihara disregarded laboratory regulations. With a gentle snap, the bottle neck shattered. He picked up the bottle and sniffed it, and the familiar, vibrant sea scent wafted towards him.
“Haha, ‘Child of the Sea’.” Akihara laughed, but there was no smile in his eyes. “Who came up with that name? Isn’t it just ‘Sea Heir’?”
“Hai Si?” Amuro Tooru chewed on the strange word.
“I’ll explain later. We need to get back quickly and stop them from drinking the ‘sake’ that Yamamoto Kazuo prepared.” As he spoke, the opened ampoule disappeared from his hand, replaced by a loaded gun.
"Why..." Amuro Tooru wanted to ask something more, but was interrupted by Akihara.
Akihara looked directly into Amuro Tooru's eyes, his expression more serious than ever before. "Otherwise, a global biohazard crisis will begin."
