Matsuda Jinpei's hand trembled as he clutched his phone.

As a bomb disposal expert in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Security Division, his hands, which had always been very steady, were now trembling as he gripped his phone tightly, his fingertips losing all color.

His memory of what happened afterward was somewhat hazy, perhaps due to his brain's self-protective mechanism. He only remembered insisting on rushing up the apartment building where the explosion had just occurred, but being stopped by his colleagues. In the end, they couldn't persuade him otherwise, and let him go up with the rescue team.

The elevator was destroyed on the 38th floor, and the rescue team had to climb the stairs one floor at a time. Before they were even halfway up, they heard several more explosions from upstairs, so the team members had to hold Matsuda Jinpei down and calm him down. After a few minutes, the explosions stopped, and the team members continued their ascent.

Fortunately, the stairwell to the target floor was not blocked by the collapsed ceiling and beams; it appears a small explosion occurred there, scattering brick and stone fragments everywhere.

Matsuda Jinpei gritted his teeth, forcing himself to remain calm. He and the rescue team traversed the ruins, exposed electrical wires crackling and sparking, and the fires caused by the explosions still burning. Police officers cleared roadblocks while extinguishing flames along the way.

"Wounded!" a police officer shouted. There lay an explosive ordnance disposal officer wearing a bomb suit and helmet, already in a deep coma, blood slowly trickling down his face through the gap between his helmet and his cheek.

They subsequently discovered other injured team members, and fortunately, they were all still alive when they were found.

A small glimmer of hope rose in Matsuda Jinpei's heart. What if? What if he, too, was lucky enough to survive? But a voice deep inside him kept denying his idea. Hagiwara was closest to the bomb, and that guy wasn't even wearing a protective suit... How could it be possible at such close range...?

He stopped in his tracks. A short distance ahead lay a person, motionless, as if lifeless. The light was dim, and the flames obscured his vision, but he recognized him at a glance as Kenji Hagiwara.

No, no, Hagiwara, he must!

Matsuda Jinpei's mind went blank. He instinctively walked towards Hagiwara Kenji, even tripping over a protruding steel bar along the way. He staggered a couple of steps and straightened up, as if regaining some of his senses.

“You, second-year graduate student…” Matsuda Jinpei stammered, not knowing what he was saying. As he approached, he could see a charred mess on the other man’s back, with burnt clothes stuck to his skin. He reached out his stiff, numb hand to check his friend’s pulse.

"Captain..." The team members who arrived later silently stopped behind Matsuda Jinpei.

Suddenly, Matsuda's previously blank gaze returned to its usual bright state. He could clearly feel the pulse beating strongly beneath his fingertips.

"Quick, Hagiwara is alright, carry him away!"

……

Downstairs at the apartment building, all the affected police officers were carried out of the building one by one and transferred to ambulances, which sped away in droves. Kenji Hagiwara, the last to be carried down, was placed in an ambulance and received basic first aid from paramedics.

Matsuda Jinpei initially insisted on going to the hospital with the ambulance, but after the medical staff assured him on their honor that Hagiwara was not seriously injured, he decided to stay at the scene to assist the police with the aftermath.

After completely extinguishing all open flames and properly resettling the affected residents, experts were temporarily called in to conduct a safety assessment of the damaged building. As these tasks were completed, the sun began to set.

Matsuda watched silently as unaffected residents returned to their apartments, a lit cigarette in his hand—a gift from his team member, one he didn't smoke. He began pacing anxiously until his phone, which he'd been holding, started vibrating.

He answered the phone almost as soon as it rang.

"Hello, this is Matsuda."

"Hello, this is Asahi Nagano Hospital. I am your friend Kenji Hagiwara's attending physician..."

"Doctor, how is Hagiwara?!"

"Don't worry, young man. Your friend is lucky; he's the least injured of the group that was brought in. He only has minor burns on his back and some abrasions and contusions on his elbows. He's awake now, and the first thing he did was ask me to call you so you wouldn't worry anymore."

Matsuda Jinpei let out a long sigh of relief; heaven knows how agonizing his afternoon had been. He couldn't imagine how he would explain it to Chisato if anything had happened to his friend. He didn't dwell on the doctor's description of the injury, only thinking that Hagiwara was lucky.

"Okay, please tell him to rest and recover. I'll visit him after I'm done."

"No problem. Oh, right, there's one more thing. He asked me to ask you if you saw a young man at the explosion site, wearing a white T-shirt and black pants."

Matsuda Jinpei then remembered this incident. He recalled that when he was on the phone with Hagiwara, the other end had indeed mentioned a person who had broken into the scene. He frowned and looked up at the apartment building where black smoke had stopped rising. He had already run back and forth to the scene many times; the rubble was still being cleared, but he was certain that no one was left.

"Okay, I understand. Tell him to rest and relax." Then he hung up the phone.

"Hello?" The doctor only heard a busy tone on the other end of the phone. He sighed; the young man on the other end had a rather impatient personality, even he could tell. He had clearly asked "Do you have it?" but the other person had replied "I know."

It's like asking "Yes or no" but getting the answer "or".

He shook his head, put down the landline phone, and turned to go back to the ward.

……

Matsuda Jinpei reorganized his team to go upstairs for the search and rescue, and he brushed past Akihara Kazumitsu on the middle floor.

Qiu Yuan was dressed in a hip-hop style casual outfit. He wore an orange hoodie with oddly shaped monkey heads printed on it, loose khaki casual pants, and a white baseball cap with the brim facing backward. His slightly long hair was tied up.

This was another outfit he had prepared in advance in the system space, striving to make a clear distinction from his original image.

The system's assessment is that you might share common ground with Shigeo Kageyama in terms of fashion sense.

He stayed on the 25th floor for a full four hours until the police allowed residents on the lower floors to gradually return home, at which point he slowly walked down. As he brushed past Matsuda Jinpei, he was looking down at Gin, texting him.

A policeman's intuition made Matsuda Jinpei pause for a moment. He slowed his pace, looked back at the hip-hop youth, but didn't find anything unusual. In the end, he looked away and continued the search for the young man in white with his team.

……

The young man in white walked along the streets of Nagano Prefecture. Nagano Prefecture is known for its developed agriculture and forestry, and is one of the few agricultural prefectures in Japan, often referred to as the "Kingdom of Horticulture." It boasts abundant alpine lakes and rivers, making it rich in tourism resources. It is also one of the ten prefectures that will be subject to a ban on the import of Japanese seafood by Ryumon Island on August 24, 2023.

System: Don't let anything that breaks the fourth wall slip in unnoticed!

The streets were deserted, the sun was slowly sinking, and thick, dark clouds rolled in. Every now and then, a police car would speed by with its siren blaring.

Akihara Kazuhiro looked up at the sky. The sky over Terra sometimes looked like this, but what followed was a cataclysmic cloud that would claim countless lives.

"It's going to rain," he murmured.
