407. The Deceitful Human Heart 6
[Organizational Base]
The metal gate at the deepest part of the base opened from the middle to both sides. Rum walked in, and the young man inside turned around upon hearing the sound, looking at him with a provocative expression.
Rum's expression darkened, and he then greeted the giant eyeball on the wall inside the space: "Sir, I've arrived."
"Now that everyone's here, let's get to the point." The signature electronic male voice spoke up. "Rum, Duago says you arrested his informant without cause and tortured him. What's your explanation?"
Rum immediately realized that the kid was cunning and had come to complain first. He snorted coldly, staring at Jiang Jin with a sinister look, and said without changing his expression, "Sir, that person is not an informant at all. He is clearly a policeman colluding with Duyago. I arrested him for the safety of the organization. Duyago even raided my stronghold and set fire to try to destroy all traces in order to save this policeman. He must have something to hide!"
"I've got a damn thing to do." Before the man could even ask, Jiang Jin launched into a tirade, causing Rum's face to turn ashen. But Jiang Jin didn't care; he was the one who filed the complaint first, and he couldn't afford to show any remorse. "You arrested my man for no reason, and I rescued him, so what? You left him half-dead! If you hadn't been there, I wouldn't just have burned down your base, I would have burned you too, and scattered your ashes!"
When had Rum ever encountered someone so blatantly disrespectful? Pointing at Jiang Jin, he angrily said, "Sir, this boy is so arrogant; he clearly doesn't respect you!"
"Sir, I've been working diligently for the organization, but I'm terrified that someone might stab me in the back at any moment!" Jiang Jin feigned a wronged expression. "Since Senior Rum says I'm colluding with the police, there must be some evidence, right?"
The burden of proof lies with the person making the claim; he must not fall into the trap of having to prove his own innocence.
"Isn't the evidence obvious?" Rum narrowed his eyes. "That policeman is the evidence. I also have a recording of him admitting that you two were trading information."
“Who knows if your recording was edited?” Jiang Jin naturally wouldn’t admit it. “You say you have evidence? Well, I have evidence too. Binga is your subordinate, right? He also told me about Rum’s private dealings with high-ranking officials in the Metropolitan Police Department.”
Upon hearing Binga's name, Rum's face darkened. He knew this guy had betrayed him: "That's utter nonsense."
Jiang Jin spread his hands: "How come you say I colluded with the police and that's evidence, but I say you're just talking nonsense? Senior Rum, you can't be so hypocritical!"
"Alright. Then let me ask you, how did you manage to break out of the hospital surrounded by police when you assassinated Tsuchimon Kanghui?" Rum, true to his cunning nature, didn't lose his composure despite Jiang Jin's easy provocation. "According to my investigation, Matsuda Jinpei was also involved in that incident, wasn't he?"
Jiang Jin raised an eyebrow, not expecting Rum to have investigated something from so long ago. But it was like Consort Qi accusing Consort Xi—the accusation was correct, but the person was wrong.
The person he colluded with that time wasn't Matsuda Jinpei, it was the FBI!
"Brother Rum, are you getting senile? What's so strange about him being there as a policeman? Besides, I didn't even know him back then. He was actually the kidnapper I was trying to escape. If it weren't for that police uniform, it wouldn't have been so easy to break out."
The gentleman listened quietly as the two argued back and forth.
"Then how do you explain the Sakurai Group's situation? Not only did the deal you were in charge of fail, but the police had also stopped their investigation." Rum's question was very sharp. "The night you were injured, you went to see that policeman, didn't you? You revealed the inside story of Sakurai, which is why the First Investigation Division suddenly reported it again for investigation."
Jiang Jin didn't know if Rum had guessed by chance or if he had actually found out that he had been recuperating at Matsuda Jinpei's place when he was injured. But he had to admit that there were some things Rum could find out if he wanted to, so... he couldn't let him live any longer.
However, Rum miscalculated one thing, though it's unclear whether the person deliberately didn't tell him, or whether Rum was pretending not to know.
Jiang Jin dared to leak the information to Matsuda Jinpei because he was certain that the organization would not tolerate such double-crossing and would definitely take action.
He was merely using this as an opportunity for revenge, something that was tacitly approved by his superiors. It was later proven that his superiors did indeed adopt a direct approach, prompting the police to investigate the Sakurai Foundation with utmost zeal.
“Rum, regarding this matter, Duago did nothing wrong.” The words that spoke made Rum, who had been talking non-stop, stop. “Since Sakurai’s people did something like double-crossing, they have to bear the consequences.”
Jiang Jin thought to himself, "It seems that the gentleman had already begun to guard against Rum."
The peacemaker, or perhaps his ulterior motives, were more intriguing: "Alright, this was just a misunderstanding. I believe in Duago's loyalty, especially since it all started with a kid who's no longer a policeman. Duago—"
Jiang Jin's eyelids twitched, and then he heard the voice say, "You and Rum are both the most loyal members of the organization. You should both back down. Rum, stop harping on this. Duyago, go and deal with that kid."
Rum and Jiang Jin exchanged a glance. The former lamented that this was still not enough to resolve their grievances, while the latter was dissatisfied with the conciliatory attitude and the obvious intention not to make things easy for him.
If he doesn't want to take action, Rum certainly won't give up. Everyone has to look out for themselves, so he'll have no choice but to agree for now.
Just as Jiang Jin was about to speak, an unexpected person appeared—Vermouth arrived with Furuya Rei.
Vermouth entered and glanced at Jiang Jin with an air of detached amusement before stepping aside to let Furuya Rei out. Jiang Jin frowned; he wasn't sure what Furuya Rei was planning to do at this moment.
“Sir, Matsuda Jinpei is not only Toago’s informant, but also one of my men. I placed him next to Toago.” Furuya Rei began to fabricate a story without blinking. “As you should know, when I went undercover as a police officer, he was my classmate at the police academy. At that time, he was already my informant.”
Rum looked at Furuya Rei in disbelief. This was clearly an unexpected situation for him, and for a moment he was unsure whether Furuya Rei had made it up to help Jiang Jin or was telling the truth.
“Bourbon, sending you to the police station was a highly confidential matter, and you just blurted it out?” The man’s words carried a hint of displeasure, but Furuya Rei simply lowered his eyes and replied, “Everyone here is the most loyal to the organization, and someone the boss trusts. I don’t think anyone would casually reveal it or use it to make a fuss.”
Rum's face darkened; it sounded like he was being targeted.
Rei Furuya continued, "Jinpei Matsuda is of little use to Toago, but there are many things I still need him to do."
Rum scoffed, "I heard you and Duago have a pretty good relationship, right? Why are you suddenly saying that Matsuda is someone you planted next to him, someone you're spying on?"
If Matsuda Jinpei hadn't been deliberately approached by Jiang Jin, he probably would have been suspicious. So Jiang Jin was also curious about how Furuya Rei would answer.
Rei Furuya chuckled lightly, "Rum-senpai, I haven't been spying on anyone. I've just arranged for one of my trusted confidants to keep an eye on my friend. What's wrong with that?"
This "concern" didn't sound like ordinary "concern." Vermouth's blue eyes darted around, and she interjected, "Rum, I think you'd better stay out of the young people's business."
Rum's gaze lingered between Jiang Jin and Furuya Rei. He didn't quite understand Vermouth's deeper meaning, but judging from their expressions, Duyago was clearly surprised.
If he can stir up conflict between these two people, then he won't have gained nothing.
"Since Bourbon has said so, let's leave it at that for Rum."
