Chapter 185 Rong Huai's First Meeting 2 Brother-in-law 1
The rain poured down like a waterfall, pelting the ground and splashing up countless transparent flowers that seemed to bloom and wither in the air. The whole world was shrouded in this dense drizzle, blurring visibility.
In such terrible weather, Catherine and Rong Huaizhi drove slowly into Karolide and parked the car in the spacious and open area of Chang'an Palace. Due to the heavy rain, Catherine and Rong Huaizhi had to get out of the car in a hurry.
The moment Catherine stepped out of the car, a gust of wind, accompanied by large raindrops, hit her in the face. She shivered and stumbled. However, before she could regain her balance, a strong hand reached out and pulled her into a warm and firm embrace.
Catherine looked up in surprise, and there stood Rong Huaizhi's handsome and concerned face. He bent down slightly and picked her up without hesitation. This sudden action caught Catherine completely off guard, and a look of surprise flashed across her face for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure.
Perhaps because she already knew and trusted Rong Huaizhi to a certain extent, Catherine did not struggle or resist much. On the contrary, she naturally and skillfully stretched out her arms and gently wrapped them around Rong Huaizhi's neck, snuggling together like an intimate couple.
Rong Huaizhi hurriedly carried Catherine, stumbling and staggering as they ran. They looked extremely disheveled, as if they had just experienced a thrilling adventure. The rain relentlessly lashed at them, causing their hair to cling wetly to their cheeks, water droplets constantly streaming down their faces. The hems of their clothes were also soaked, with glistening water droplets dripping down, forming small puddles on the ground.
Finally, Rong Huaizhi, panting heavily, rushed to the corridor of Chang'an Palace. He had just steadied himself and was about to catch his breath when he heard a loud bang behind him. The door had been flung open! There stood Catherine's brother, Hilbert, his tall, imposing, and elegant figure like a cold, imposing mountain blocking the doorway. Although his face was pale and unhealthy, it couldn't diminish the charm emanating from his exquisitely sculpted features. Especially striking were his deep, ocean-blue eyes, which shone like dazzling jewels.
At this moment, Hilbert was wearing a simple black short-sleeved shirt, yet the taut muscle lines beneath were clearly visible. The veins on his powerful arms bulged slightly, appearing and disappearing as if they were about to unleash astonishing energy, giving him a formidable presence. His icy blue eyes, like cold stars, gleamed with undisguised scrutiny and displeasure, his sharp gaze sweeping back and forth between Rong Huaizhi and Catherine, as if trying to see right through them.
In that instant, Catherine's gaze met that of her brother Hilbert. Her heart clenched as if gripped by an invisible hand, and she instinctively tried to break free from Rong Huaizhi's warm embrace.
Rong Huaizhi seemed to sense Catherine's thoughts. He gently set her down, his movements as tender as if handling a rare treasure. However, as his feet touched the ground, a slightly awkward smile appeared on Rong Huaizhi's handsome face, like a child who had done something wrong and was at a loss. He then chose to remain silent, simply standing there quietly, waiting for what might happen next.
Catherine noticed her brother Hilbert's terribly grim expression and felt a pang of guilt. She spoke somewhat embarrassedly, "Brother, what are you doing here? I remember you said you were going to the studio to paint." Hilbert frowned slightly, not immediately responding to his sister's question. Instead, he silently stepped aside to let them enter. However, despite this, his gaze never left Rong Huaizhi's back, like a sharp ray, following him closely, not missing a single subtle movement.
Seeing her brother's cold attitude, Catherine couldn't help but complain, "Brother, don't be so cold! You're scaring people!" Hearing his sister's complaint, Hilbert just snorted coldly, "Hmph, I'd like to see what kind of person could make my precious sister run out in the pouring rain without a care in the world!" His tone was full of dissatisfaction and doubt, clearly showing his deep prejudice against this suddenly appearing Rong Huaizhi.
Hilbert took a deep breath, as if trying to suppress the rage burning within him, but even so, the words that came out of his mouth still carried an undisguised anger: "Catherine Nore Lancaster! Do you even understand your own condition? You're a patient through and through, you need to take good care of yourself! And yet, you're out here running wildly in this pouring rain, just for that man? Is he really worth you humiliating yourself like this? It's clearly him who has wronged you, not the other way around!"
Upon hearing this, Rong Huaizhi and Catherine both looked ashamed. They knew in their hearts that their behavior was indeed inappropriate, so neither of them dared to respond. They just stood there silently, like two children who had made a mistake and were waiting to be punished.
After stepping through the magnificent golden gates of Chang'an Palace, Hilbert strolled forward. He casually took two snow-white towels from a servant and tossed them behind him with a flick of his wrist. Startled, Rong Huai hurriedly reached out and caught the flying towels. Without thinking, he quickly draped one of the towels over his head, hastily drying his wet hair, and cautiously followed behind Hilbert and Catherine.
Meanwhile, Hilbert strode forward with his arms crossed and his posture upright. He appeared to be looking straight ahead, but his eyes never left Rong Huaizhi. From head to toe, inside and out, Hilbert scrutinized Rong Huaizhi as if he were a criminal. With each step of his gaze, Hilbert became increasingly certain that the man before him was the same man he knew from years ago. Thinking this, his impression of Rong Huaizhi grew even more hostile.
For a moment, the entire hall fell silent, save for the soft footsteps of the three figures echoing in the empty space. The surrounding air seemed to be affected by this oppressive atmosphere, as if solidified into a heavy, leaden weight, pressing down on everyone's hearts. The tension characteristic of a first meeting spread silently through the small space like an invisible wisp of smoke.
About ten minutes passed. The elevator doors beside the three slowly opened, and they entered one by one. With a slight swaying sound, the elevator quickly ascended and finally arrived at the floor where Catherine lived.
After exiting the elevator, the three continued down the beautifully carpeted corridor. Another ten minutes or so passed before they finally stopped in front of an ornately decorated door—this was Catherine's room.
Just then, Hilbert looked at Catherine with a serious expression and said in an unquestionable tone, "Have him go to my room to take a good bath later, and you should also go back to your room and take a hot bath. You mustn't catch a cold! If your condition worsens, our return to China will probably have to be postponed even further."
