Chapter 40 Gao Lishi Offers Advice

After leaving Dongling Temple, Xiao Huanling let Liuyun take him galloping freely across the deserted wilderness. He had to deal with and vent his various emotions on his own until night fell and a bright moon hung high in the sky. Only then did he slowly ride back to Dongling Temple.

"I went out for a walk to clear my head, did that make me feel any better?"

As soon as Xiao Huanling climbed over the wall into Huanqing Residence, he saw Shi Yan standing under the night sky, smiling at him.

Xiao Huanling was stunned for a moment when he didn't expect Shi Yan to be waiting for him to return. It took him a long time to find his voice.

"You're waiting for me."

Shi Yan remained noncommittal, simply smiling as she looked at him.

"It's getting late, get some rest. I'm going back to my room to sleep."

Upon hearing this, Xiao Huanling immediately replied with an "okay".

Shi Yan was relieved to see that he had returned, but she was indeed a little worried because Xiao Huanling had gone out alone and had not returned.

After confirming that there was nothing unusual about the other party, Shi Yan said goodbye to Xiao Huanling and went back to her room.

The next day, Shi Yan woke up a little later than usual. After washing up, she asked Xiao Die, who had styled her hair and put on her crown, to invite Xiao Huanling to the Flower Pavilion for breakfast. Unexpectedly, as soon as she arrived at the Flower Pavilion, Xiao Die, who had gone to invite Xiao Huanling for breakfast, rushed in with a letter in a hurry.

"My lady, it seems that Young Master Xiao has left. This is the letter I found on the table."

Shi Yan took the letter and opened it to read. It contained only a few lines, but it was full of sincere feelings. Xiao Huanling expressed his gratitude for saving her and taking care of her, and said that he would treat her as his own family. He told Shi Yan not to worry, and that he was just going home.

After reading the letter, Shi Yan felt a little empty inside. She was surprised that she had developed feelings for Xiao Huanling and was therefore reluctant to part with him. However, she quickly returned to normal and greeted Xiao Die for breakfast as if nothing had happened.

She understood all too well the principle that gatherings and separations are inevitable; she was merely a passerby in this era, so there was no need to worry about anything.

Li Longji, unable to sleep well after returning to the palace, even skipped the morning court session.

Gao Lishi saw that Li Longji looked worried and was filled with anxiety.

"Your Majesty, if you have any worries, you can tell this servant. Please don't keep them to yourself."

Gao Lishi's eyes stung with tears, his heart ached terribly, and he was overjoyed to see the emaciated emperor.

Li Longji was indeed very distressed. He had gone to see Yang Yuhuan yesterday, thinking that the beauty would be deeply moved, but to his surprise, she was cold and kept avoiding his advances. He didn't know how to win Yang Yuhuan's heart. He, who was always confident, was at a loss and was filled with worry.

He couldn't understand why, despite being the emperor, possessing the wealth and power of the world, he couldn't win Yang Yuhuan's heart. He longed for her, yet couldn't bear to punish her, and forced himself on her without restraint. Yang Yuhuan ignited his deep-seated desire to conquer, and he was willing to do anything to make her submit to him, love him, respect him, and regard him as her heaven.

"Lishi, I can subdue any foreign enemy and make the people of the world bow down and submit, but why can't I get what I want from her?"

Li Longji's bitterness was palpable, and Gao Lishi couldn't help but blame Yang Yuhuan in his heart for not knowing how to be worthy of his favor.

"Your Majesty, what is your request? Please tell this servant."

Li Longji pondered for a moment, then squinted at Gao Lishi, who looked respectful and seemingly full of confidence, and voiced his inner desires.

“I want her to come into the palace. She is far away outside the palace, and I cannot alleviate my longing for her. Only when she enters the palace will she understand that she can go nowhere but by my side.”

"If we're close enough, I'll always find a way to please her. With her by my side every day and the highest honors bestowed upon me, I don't believe she won't develop feelings for me."

"Do you have a way to get her to agree to enter the palace sooner? Even if it means silencing the world, she can still enter the Tai Zhen Temple to cultivate."

Li Longji's words were full of longing for Yang Yuhuan and his inability to obtain her. As a loyal servant of the emperor, Gao Lishi quickly came up with a plan.

"Your Majesty, I have heard that Lady Taizhen is quite close to her cousin and sister. Perhaps she will heed the advice of her brother and sister."

After a moment's thought, Li Longji asked.

"But they're just cousins, do their words really have any effect?"

Seeing Li Longji's doubts, Gao Lishi gave a humble smile.

"Your Majesty, you have no idea what kind of person my wife's cousin is, or what kind of ambition he has. If he learns of an opportunity to rise to the top, he will definitely seize it."

"When the lady was first betrothed to Prince Shou, he traveled a great distance to find her and acknowledge their kinship. The lady accepted him as her cousin and called him brother. He was also a good person, so the lady valued him quite a bit."

“My lady comes from the Yang family. She represents not just herself, but the vast family behind her. How could the Yang family resist the temptation of receiving the Emperor's favor? Sending a member of the Yang family to negotiate might change your mind. Then Your Majesty will be able to get what you want.”

Li Longji also felt that Gao Lishi's words made sense.

"Where does her cousin live now, and what's his name?"

Gao Lishi respectfully replied.

"Your Majesty, my wife's cousin, named Yang Zhao, currently resides in Chang'an. It is said that he is also Zhang Yizhi's nephew."

Li Longji's eyes narrowed.

"Oh……"

"Since you speak so eloquently, go out of the palace and deliver my oral decree to him. If he does well, I will reward him."

Gao Lishi did not inquire about the details of the imperial edict, as he already knew the emperor's intentions perfectly well.

"This servant will leave the palace immediately to convey His Majesty's oral decree."

He bowed and left.

When Gao Lishi arrived at Yang Zhao's residence, it was already more than half an hour later. Upon seeing the commotion, the gatekeepers and servants rushed forward to greet him. Upon learning of Gao Lishi's identity, they dared not neglect him and led him into the hall of Yang's residence to sit down. They then immediately informed the steward to go and invite Yang Zhao.

While Gao Lishi was drinking tea in the hall, Yang Zhao was writing in his study. He didn't think much of it when he heard that a distinguished guest had come to the steward's house, but when the steward told him that it was Gao Lishi, the emperor's personal eunuch, his expression changed instantly and he strode out of the study and headed towards the front yard.

"The presence of Eunuch Gao in my humble abode truly brings honor to my humble dwelling."

Yang Zhao (Yang Guozhong) stepped forward with a smile and exchanged pleasantries with Gao Lishi, but his heart was pounding.

Gao Lishi glanced at Yang Zhao (Yang Guozhong), and smiled amiably.

"I have come on His Majesty's orders. Please dismiss your attendants."

Upon hearing this, Yang Zhao's heart jumped. He ordered everyone else to leave before trying his best to remain calm and looking at Gao Lishi.

"I wonder what imperial edict Your Majesty has for me."

For the first time, Yang Zhao was given a name by the emperor and had the honor of hearing the emperor's edict. He was excited but also felt uneasy.

Gao Lishi saw his fearful and apprehensive appearance but had no particular reaction. He simply embellished Li Longji's thoughts and passed them on to Yang Zhao (Yang Guozhong) in the form of an oral decree.

Upon hearing this, Yang Zhao (Yang Guozhong) was first shocked and then overjoyed. With such a great opportunity to rise to prominence right in front of him, how could he not seize it? He immediately expressed that he would certainly live up to the emperor's trust and would not disappoint him.

Having received a satisfactory reply, Gao Lishi offered some words of encouragement before leaving the Yang residence to return to the palace and report back to Li Longji.
