Chapter 76 Guan Bo Exorcises the Demon
"What is the second test? Please tell me, Master. Oh, by the way, Brother Monkey asked me to give my regards to the Master, saying that he has missed him dearly after so many years."
Guan Bo now understands that when you don't have the leverage to reason with others, you shouldn't expect them to reason with you. However, he still needs to cultivate relationships, hoping that Bodhi Patriarch might soften his heart and let him off the hook.
"Hehe, you are indeed clever, you monster." Patriarch Bodhi laughed. "The second test is to have you protect Tang Sanzang through the calamity of Baoxiang Kingdom. If you haven't managed to get Tang Sanzang out of Baoxiang Kingdom safely by the time the monkey returns, then you've lost."
Guan Bo felt a headache coming on when he heard about this test.
He knew the story of Baoxiang Kingdom very well. Basically, Tang Sanzang foolishly stumbled into the Yellow Robe Monster's cave, intending to be captured and eaten. But Princess Baihua Xiu rescued him, saving him from certain death. He and his disciples escaped the cave and arrived in Baoxiang Kingdom. However, after hearing the King of Baoxiang's tearful tale, Tang Sanzang's compassion overflowed. Even though he knew his two disciples were no match for the Yellow Robe Monster, he still ordered them to exorcise the demon.
The result was a resounding defeat; Pigsy escaped, while Sandy was captured by the Yellow Robe Monster.
The yellow-robed monster, annoyed that Tang Sanzang didn't know what was good for him, transformed himself into a handsome scholar and went to Baoxiang Kingdom to find a prince consort. He then turned Tang Sanzang into a tiger and imprisoned him.
That's why Pigsy had no choice but to fly to Flower Fruit Mountain and ask the Great Sage Equal to Heaven to come out of the mountain and deal with the Yellow Robe Monster.
Guan Bo calculated the time; he had just returned from Baoxiang Kingdom not long ago, and Tang Sanzang was about to meet the king. If these guys weren't so talkative, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing would probably already be heading to the Yellow Robe Monster's cave.
If these two act recklessly and provoke the Yellow Robe Monster's wrath, the situation will naturally spiral out of control, and Monkey King's return to the mountain will be inevitable.
Guan Bo pondered that Bodhi Patriarch's request to safely escort Tang Sanzang out of Baoxiang Kingdom before Monkey King left the mountain was hardly a test; it was clearly out of concern for his disciple whom he hadn't seen for many years. Knowing the dangers of the Journey to the West and understanding his deep filial piety, Guan Bo asked him to help resolve this problem so that Monkey King could have a few more days off.
Having figured out the key points, Guan Bo's face fell even more.
With his abilities, how could he possibly defeat that yellow-robed monster?
However, judging from Bodhi Patriarch's appearance, it didn't seem like there was anything that could be negotiated, so Guan Bo had no choice but to hurry up and accept the order and leave.
Guan Bo left the courtyard and, upon seeing Daoist Yuan, eagerly asked, "Daoist, could you please do me a favor and use your magic to send me to Baoxiang Kingdom?"
Guan Bo thought to himself that even if he chased after them on the wind, he probably wouldn't be able to catch up by now. However, the Taoist priest Yuantong's magic was amazing, almost like teleportation. Even if he couldn't stop Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing from going to the monster's cave, he could at least protect Tang Sanzang and then send him out of Baoxiang Kingdom, which would be a way to break the deadlock.
The passage to Yuantong was naturally unavoidable. With the magical water curtain falling, Guan Bo was once again in the magnificent Baoxiang Kingdom, and he went straight into the imperial court.
However, the Taoist priest only teleported him over, so when Guan Bo appeared, the entire court of officials was so frightened that they shouted, "There is an assassin!"
Guan Bo didn't care about any of that. He looked around and saw that Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing were still in the main hall, so he breathed a sigh of relief.
Faced with the surging, armed guards, Guan Bo didn't bother with these mortals. He simply let the sharp blades pierce his body, without even activating the Sanskrit characters on his robe.
"Don't get agitated. I'm here to find someone, not to kill anyone," Guan Bo said to the terrified King of Baoxiang.
"Who are you?" the King of Baoxiang asked.
Before Guan Bo could answer, Tang Sanzang explained for him, "Your Majesty, please rest assured. This is a mountain-guarding deity under the Bodhisattva Guanyin, not a demon or evil person."
At this time, Tang Sanzang was an envoy of the Celestial Empire, so his words carried considerable weight.
The King of Baoxiang Kingdom glanced at Guan Bo's appearance and, finding him not as ferocious and terrifying as Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, relaxed slightly.
"May I ask why you have come, great deity?" asked the King of Baoxiang Kingdom.
"Your Majesty, I have come for your Third Princess, Baihuaxiu. I have heard that she has been captured by a demon for many years, so I will help to rescue her." Guan Bo quickly took on this matter first, so that Zhu Bajie and his men would not come knocking on his door, otherwise everything would be over.
Unexpectedly, the King of Baoxiang Kingdom said, "Thank you for your help, Great God, but Elder Tang has already promised to let his two disciples exorcise the demon, so this..."
In truth, when the King of Baoxiang saw Guan Bo's handsome appearance, he felt that he was more suited to the image of a young hero exorcising demons. Therefore, he spoke vaguely, fearing that Pigsy and Sandy would mind and feel that he looked down on the two ugly-looking men.
Just now, in front of all the civil and military officials, Pigsy demonstrated his supernatural power of transforming into a being taller than this palace. If he were to unleash his rake in a fit of rage, probably not many people would survive.
Guan Bo, of course, understood the key to this matter, so he turned to Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing and said, "Marshal Zhu, General Sha, although that monster is powerful, there's no need for you two to take action. On this journey to the west, protecting Elder Tang should be our priority. Therefore, I will handle this minor matter of exorcising the demon. What do you think?"
Sha Wujing, who never liked to show off, was naturally happy to keep to himself. But Zhu Bajie said, "You little rascal, you've come to steal my chance to make a name for myself."
Guan Bo thought to himself, "Second Senior Brother, how stupid are you? You just proved not long ago that you can't beat him, so why do you dare to go and die again on a different day?"
Before he could say anything more, Pigsy transmitted his voice and said, "You little rascal, you've probably got your eye on Princess Baihuaxiu too. Since you've called me Marshal a few times, I'll give you this benefit."
Guan Bo was dumbfounded. This guy was actually after the princess. Damn it, it seems that being banished to the mortal realm for harassing Chang'e might not actually be a setup. This guy is practically a pioneer in the world of romance; it's not surprising that he got tricked.
However, since both Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing had agreed, Guan Bo had completed half of his mission. He then said to Tang Sanzang, "Elder Tang, since I will rescue Princess Baihuaxiu, you might as well continue your journey to the west. Don't delay the great cause of obtaining the scriptures."
Guan Bo thought to himself that as long as Tang Sanzang successfully left Baoxiang Kingdom, the test should be considered complete.
However, Tang Sanzang said, "Since the High God wants to save the princess, then let us wait here. The princess has been kind to me, and this humble monk wanted to thank her in person."
Guan Bo really wanted to slap Tang Seng so hard he'd fly away; this was just making things worse.
However, this reason was impeccable. If Guan Bo tried to persuade him further, it might arouse Tang Sanzang's suspicion. If Zhu Bajie got upset and caused another disturbance, all his efforts would have been in vain.
Left with no other choice, Guan Bo flew alone toward the monster's cave, pondering how to resolve the matter between the Yellow Robe Monster and Baihua Xiu.
A direct confrontation is definitely not going to work, but a roundabout approach might offer a chance to turn things around.
Before they could figure out a solution, they had already arrived at the monster's cave.
Above the gate was a white jade slab with six large characters engraved on it: "Wanzishan Wave Moon Cave".
The cave entrance was wide open, but there were no monsters to be seen, only two children playing in front of it.
Guan Bo saw the two boys and immediately came up with a plan.
