Chapter 71 The Return of the Patriarch
"Three tests for entry? What will they test?" Guan Bo felt there was a trap involved, but he couldn't refute what Xian Tong said.
Just by looking at the many "Bodhi disciples" in that small town, one can tell that there are indeed many people seeking immortality and enlightenment. If Fangcun Mountain had taken them all in, this immortal grotto would have been overflowing with people long ago.
The fairy boy sneered, "What's the rush? Wait here first. These three entrance tests aren't easy to pass. You'd better prepare well."
After saying this, the fairy boy led the round-faced Taoist priest into the cave.
As the stone gate opened and closed, Guan Bo could only barely see the beautiful scenery inside. It was a series of deep pavilions and magnificent buildings, with countless pearl palaces and shell pavilions, and the quiet and secluded dwellings were beyond description.
However, the stone gate quickly and mercilessly closed, leaving Guan Bo alone outside.
"There are no hints about what these three entrance tests are. According to 'Journey to the West,' Monkey King was able to enter directly and meet Bodhi Patriarch. This is definitely a protagonist template of getting in through the back door. I'm afraid I can't learn from that."
Guan Bo began to rack his brains, trying to figure out what this entrance test was testing.
Generally speaking, there's a concept of aptitude for cultivating Taoism.
Guan Bo has read many cultivation novels, which can be roughly divided into two types: one is innate talent for cultivation, like the "spiritual root" that has been written about to death; the other is a test of willpower, to see if one's heart toward the Dao is firm.
Guan Bo was confident that neither of these options should be a problem. After all, he was a transformed demon, and his cultivation aptitude was certainly up to par. Moreover, he had the help of Guanyin Bodhisattva during his tribulation, and his perfect human form was in no way inferior to that of a protagonist like Lingxiu.
As for tests of perseverance, he is naturally not afraid. Whether in this life or the previous one, Guan Bo never gives up on what he has decided on.
Otherwise, they wouldn't have traveled all the way to Fangcun Mountain just to revive a little girl they picked up.
Guan Bo didn't care about either of these, but then he remembered that cultivating the Tao also required certain opportunities. To put it bluntly, it was all about luck. For example, there might be a test like drawing lots or winning a lottery. In that case, no matter how many methods you used, you could only leave it to fate.
The most troublesome thing is this, and Guan Bo has also offended the guardian fairy, who might play tricks at this crucial moment, making Guan Bo suffer in silence.
That won't do; we need to come up with a solution first.
With no one around, Guan Bo could only rely on his imagination to fill in various scenarios and then think of ways to solve them one by one.
Meanwhile, inside the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars, the fairy boy and Yuantong walked together.
Seeing the celestial boy walk straight towards his home, Yuantong asked, "Senior brother, I have been away from the mountain for decades. I don't know what kind of entrance test the patriarch set up. Could you tell me a thing or two?"
The celestial boy turned back to the circular passage and said, "Test? What test? I was just deceiving him. This Lingtai Fangcun Mountain only accepts those with affinity. Since he came here but did not see the patriarch, I know he is not destined. In that case, there is no need for any test. Let him wait outside the door. When he gets tired of waiting, he will naturally leave."
This answer left Yuantong speechless. He wanted to remind Guan Bo, but unfortunately, the opening and closing of the mountain gate was entirely controlled by the fairy boy. Judging from his expression, he was determined to trick Guan Bo, and it was impossible for him to ask him to open the gate.
It was naturally impossible for Yuantong to secretly contact Guan Bo.
The Crescent Moon and Three Stars Cave appears to be a cave within a mountain, but it is actually a small world. With its mountain gate tightly closed, the Crescent Moon and Three Stars Cave is isolated from the world, drifting among the three thousand small worlds.
Even if a Great Immortal smashed down the mountain gate, he wouldn't be able to enter; he would only see a desolate cave.
However, since Guan Bo was someone Yuantong had brought with him, he couldn't just stand by and watch him be deceived by the fairy boy. So he stopped arguing with the fairy boy and went straight back to his own courtyard, where he rummaged through his belongings and pulled out a jade talisman.
This is a precious communication talisman bestowed by Patriarch Bodhi. Whenever danger arises, crushing this talisman will grant Patriarch Bodhi's protection and allow him to sense your presence.
No matter how many realms or worlds are separated, Patriarch Bodhi can arrive at the fastest speed.
As a disciple highly regarded by Bodhi Patriarch, Yuantong had cultivated for a thousand years and only obtained this one talisman, which could be described as a life-saving treasure.
But at this moment, Yuantong crushed the talisman without hesitation, and a clear light enveloped it, making it impervious to all magic and warding off all evil.
Immediately afterwards, a beam of light appeared in the courtyard, revealing the appearance of a Taoist priest.
This Taoist priest appeared to be of unknown age, yet it seemed that even the myriad stars could not match his age, and few among the gods and Buddhas could compare to him. Truly, he was: a Greatly Enlightened Golden Immortal without blemish, a wondrous figure of the Western Ancestral Bodhi.
Neither born nor dying, the three paths are in motion; with all energy and spirit, boundless compassion prevails.
Emptiness and stillness naturally change with nature; true nature allows itself to be as it is.
With a dignified body that lives as long as the heavens, a great Dharma Master who has enlightened his mind through countless eons.
This Taoist priest was none other than Patriarch Bodhi. Upon sensing that Yuantong had crushed the talisman, he rushed back immediately.
“My disciple Yuantong, what do you mean by this?” Bodhi Patriarch looked at this disciple who had been a disciple for a thousand years and could tell at a glance that he had not encountered any danger.
"Master, I was reckless, but I had no other choice but to resort to this desperate measure to beg you to return." Yuantong quickly knelt before Bodhi Master and then recounted in detail how Guan Bo had been deceived by the fairy boy while seeking the Dao.
Yuantong didn't embellish the story because of the wasted jade talisman; he simply repeated it objectively.
"For a mere panda spirit, you crushed this jade talisman. Do you know its value? Even if I were to refine this talisman, it would take me eighty-one years. With this talisman in hand, even the most sages in the world would be powerless against you in a hurry," Patriarch Bodhi asked.
"Disciple...I understand."
Yuantong did not explain, but simply prostrated himself on the ground and obediently awaited the punishment of Patriarch Bodhi.
"Since the jade talisman has been bestowed upon you, it is your freedom to use it as you see fit. I will not blame you for this. Please rise." Patriarch Bodhi said to Yuan Tongdao.
"Our ancestor is benevolent." Yuantong quickly kowtowed in gratitude.
“Yingzhong still harbors resentment towards that monkey, so he naturally looks down on the monster he introduced even more. I never usually interfere in my disciples’ private affairs, but since you’ve used the jade talisman, I’ll naturally have to take charge,” said Bodhi Patriarch, stroking his beard.
Yingzhong was the Daoist name of that celestial boy.
Fangcun Mountain School has twelve generations, each with a Daoist name derived from the characters Guang, Da, Zhi, Hui, Zhen, Ru, Xing, Hai, Ying, Wu, Yuan, and Jue. The Great Sage Equaling Heaven is the tenth generation, and was given the name Sun Wukong by the Bodhi Patriarch. Yuantong, being half the rank of the Great Sage, was given the name Yuan.
From this perspective, Yingzhong is clearly a level above Yuantong, which explains why he calls Yuantong his junior brother.
"I wonder how the Patriarch intends to handle this?" Yuantong's original intention was only to hope that Patriarch Bodhi would return and take Guan Bo into his sect, but he did not expect Yingzhong to be punished, thus damaging the harmony among fellow disciples.
Patriarch Bodhi said sternly, “Yingzhong has set up a barrier and blocked others’ path to enlightenment, which is a great evil. But I will not punish him; Heaven will punish him in my place. But if I were to invite this monster into the sect, wouldn’t that be contradicting myself? The reputation of Fangcun Mountain cannot be tarnished. The three tests for entry will begin with this panda spirit.”
