Leisurely mountain village
Chapter 73: Chain
Ye Huan nodded, "1.5 yuan per jin, it's not bad to wholesale several hundred jin at a time, did you sell them all?"
"What else can we do if we don't sell? We can't be there all the time to sell in retail, and your vegetables..." the person stammered.
"Why don't you ask someone? Organic vegetables are so easy to grow, farmers would have made a fortune long ago," Ye Huan scoffed.
Everyone understood and stopped asking questions. Before, many people thought that they could grow vegetables all their lives and still be inferior to a child. It's just that they don't use pesticides or chemical fertilizers and they water their vegetables with spring water.
After all that hard work, the vegetables I grew did cost a little more at the market than others, but only by a dollar or seven or eight cents per pound. If I asked for more, nobody would even ask.
Several vendors eventually negotiated with the vegetable sellers and were willing to buy, but the highest they offered was 1.8 yuan per jin (0.5 kg), which was incomparable to Ye Huan's vegetables.
The vegetable vendor also said that he was offering such a high price because your vegetable plots are from the same village as Ye Huan's; otherwise, he would have offered you at most one dollar and two or three cents.
Before long, the people who came to the village to inquire finished asking their questions, but got no results, so they left.
Ye Huan's group started chatting amongst themselves and stopped asking about the dishes. Ye Li was on his phone, chatting with someone, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
Jingjing fell asleep on Ye Huan's lap, her nose damp with sweat. Yesterday's downpour had made the mornings and evenings a little cooler, but the midday temperature was still quite high.
Ye Huan also took out his phone and saw that some people were chatting in the high school group. He wasn't interested in chatting, so he just peeked at them.
Then I saw Xu Tingting post a group announcement and a chain of events.
"Our old teacher is retiring this Saturday at noon. We'll have a get-together. If you're free, please join the group. The meeting place is Juyuange Hotel next to No. 1 Middle School in this city."
Then Ye Huan noticed that the group had become active. He opened the message chain and saw that about ten people had already signed up.
He didn't rush to join the conversation; he just watched everyone chat, and then he remembered that stern old lady, his high school homeroom teacher for all three years, Ms. Lu. Her most classic line was: "At the age when you should be studying, what's the point of not studying hard? How do you know?"
Ye Huan was probably her proudest and most regrettable student in her decades of teaching career. Her grades were always among the best, but on the day of the college entrance examination in English, she fell asleep and could not be woken up no matter what she did.
The proctor was terrified, but he ended up taking the exam normally on the last day.
When everyone had finished chatting and there were about 20 people in the call-and-response, he put his phone in his pocket and pretended to doze off for a while.
The voices gradually faded away as everyone went back to their work or reading. There were hardly any people around Ye Huan anymore.
As he drifted off to sleep, his phone rang. He picked it up and saw Xu Tingting. "Hello?"
"What? Are you still sleeping?"
"Yeah, you woke me up. Tell me, what should we do?" Ye Huan said with a smile.
"What a mess you've been through! Did you even see the announcement in the group chat? Are you free the day after tomorrow?" Xu Tingting asked.
"Hmm, I don't know right now, but I guess I am." Ye Huan really didn't know; whether he was alright or not depended on whether the phone rang.
"Okay, come over when you have time. I think Teacher Lu would definitely like to see you."
"Okay, definitely." Ye Huan agreed. Even if Xu Tingting didn't call, he was still planning to go, but there were still two days left, so there was no rush to join the call.
After hanging up the phone, Ye Huan couldn't fall asleep either. Looking at the time, it was past three o'clock. She woke Jingjing up, telling her that she couldn't sleep anymore, or she wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
"uncle."
Ye Huan wiped the sweat from her face, then had her stand on the deck chair. He then jumped into the river with a splash, swam back and forth for a while, then went diving and caught a grass carp weighing over three pounds.
"Uncle is amazing." Jingjing was a true cheerleader, showering everyone with emotional support.
"Haha, when we get back, I'll ask Mom to make sauerkraut fish for Jingjing."
"Okay, okay." Jingjing clapped her hands and then went back to the uncle.
Ye Huan carried a large grass carp in one hand and a recliner in the other, with Xiao Bai bringing up the rear, as they headed home.
It's four o'clock and it's not hot anymore. My mom and sister-in-law Bai Jie went to work in the fields. Both greenhouses have been covered up, but the tarpaulins are open now, otherwise it would be unbearably hot.
After finishing her own vegetable garden, Mom went to help Bai Jie turn over the soil in preparation for seed breeding. They were short-handed again, so Ye Huan's dad also got busy.
Seeing that no one had returned by five o'clock, Ye Huan cleaned the grass carp himself and started cooking. He was actually a pretty good cook, but he was just lazy. Before his parents came back, he cooked for him and his grandfather.
Grandpa came over and helped out. Grandpa's stew was exceptional, so Ye Huan got a chicken for him to stew, and he would cook the other dishes.
I went to the backyard, then took out a lot of vegetables from my spatial storage, washed them briefly, chopped them up, and put them there.
Wash the rice and cook it. Then start by making the pickled cabbage fish. After the fish fillets are marinated, stir-fry the pickled cabbage, then add the fish bones and cook them together. Then take them out and put them in a bowl. Add the fish to the soup in the pot.
Once cooked, take it out and put it in a bowl, then add some broth, sprinkle with cilantro, sesame seeds, and chili, and pour a spoonful of hot oil over it. The aroma is irresistible.
I watched my uncle's actions quietly, giving him lots of likes; he's a true fanboy.
On the charcoal stove in the yard, a large pot of pork ribs was almost ready. Ye Huan checked the time and started stir-frying vegetables, making four kinds of stir-fried vegetables, and then took out the sausage from the rice cooker and cut it into a plate.
The dishes were served and the family members returned home.
"Mom and Dad, sister-in-law, wash your hands and eat," Ye Huan said.
"Grandpa, Grandma, Mom, Uncle's cooking smells so good!" Quietly, sitting on a high chair, smelled the food on the table and said.
Everyone burst into laughter, and dinner began.
"You cooked this dish very well," Mom exclaimed.
Ye Huan smiled but didn't say anything. "Space dishes, what did you think?"
"Delicious, so delicious." Jingjing realized she had never loved vegetables so much before, and even the big chicken leg in her hand didn't taste good anymore.
The meal was finished. Luckily, Ye Huan had prepared rice with stewed pork rib soup and chicken soup for Xiao Bai and Sai Hu beforehand, otherwise they would have gone hungry.
"No wonder Gu Family Restaurant is so popular with this food," Ye Dafa remarked.
Ye Huan thought to herself, "This vegetable costs 30 yuan per pound? Am I out of my mind?"
"I watered the ones in the backyard with extra fertilizer. They're definitely better for our own consumption than the ones in the vegetable garden behind the house."
Ye Huan's parents nodded. They were truly not short of money now, so they didn't argue with their son. Earning thirty or forty thousand a day was something they had never even dared to dream of doing.
“Let’s hire a few more people. We’re not short of money. Otherwise, with you all like this every day, how am I supposed to have time to cook every day?” Ye Huan said, referring to another matter.
“Yes, Xiao Jie’s vegetable garden is getting busy too. It really can’t function without someone.” Ye Huan’s mother was the first to agree. She was also tired from working every day.
