Chapter Two: He's not
Xu Zirui stood in the kitchen for a long time before he came to his senses.
The side dishes were already prepared. He skillfully cooked Jiang Xin's favorite sweet and sour pork ribs. After thinking for a moment, he called over the chef he had hired.
"Jiang Xin's favorite flavors are a bit different from the regular recipes, and there are also medicinal cuisine recipes. I'll write them down for you later. From now on, the kitchen will be in your hands."
The head chef jokingly remarked, "Madam only likes the taste of your cooking; the rest of us probably won't be able to master it."
The emotions from the past crashed down on Xu Zirui's heart, almost making him unable to breathe.
"We're getting a divorce soon, so we won't be doing this anymore."
While the head chef was still in a daze, Xu Zirui had already brought the dishes out of the kitchen.
As soon as I arrived at the restaurant entrance, I didn't see Jiang Xin, but I saw an uninvited guest at the table.
It is Meng Chengze.
Xu Zirui suppressed the surging emotions in his heart and said, "Hello."
Meng Chengze didn't even look up.
"Thank you for your hard work. Go and rest after you finish cooking. I'll clean up after you eat."
Xu Zirui froze as he was about to put down the dish, and remained silent.
Meng Chengze then looked up. "Oh, it's you—Xinxin told me about you. After all these years, I still want to thank you for taking care of her for me."
Every word seemed to suggest that Xu Zirui's efforts over the years were a joke.
“Taking care of her is between her and me, it has nothing to do with you.”
Xu Zirui put down the plate and sat down opposite Meng Chengze.
As soon as he sat down, Meng Chengze narrowed his eyes slightly and looked Xu Zirui up and down.
He then spoke, his words carrying a strong sense of protest.
"But so what if you took care of her like a mother for seven years? Even if you healed her leg, it's just a matter of one phone call from me for her to come back to me."
Don't keep coveting things that don't belong to you, because you don't deserve them.
Xu Zirui frowned, a sudden pain surging in his chest. "Mr. Meng truly is an actor."
"Back then, when she was in a car accident, you thought she would be disabled for life, so you left the country without looking back. Now you're eagerly coming back. What are your intentions?"
Meng Chengze narrowed his eyes, his expression gradually turning dangerous.
But the next second, his gaze suddenly fell on the figure not far behind Xu Zirui, and he immediately lowered his head.
"What happened back then was all my fault."
"When I heard she had been in a car accident, I wanted to rush to the hospital, but I was diagnosed with lymphoma, which is a terminal illness."
“I was afraid that Xinxin would be reminded of her past, so I had no choice but to go abroad for treatment. But I didn’t expect that my family would cut off all contact between me and Xinxin so that I could focus on my treatment. So I’m very grateful to you for taking care of her.”
Xu Zirui clenched his fist under the table, his heart filled with disdain. "Then dare you say that you came back to see her at this time not for her money?"
No sooner had he finished speaking than a clear, cold voice came from behind him, filled with certainty.
"He is not."
While Xu Zirui was still in a daze, Jiang Xin walked over and sat in the seat between the two of them.
"Xu Zirui, do you think everyone would do anything for money? Don't use your own thoughts to maliciously assume others' opinions."
The implication is quite clear.
Xu Zirui stared incredulously at his unfamiliar wife.
She has never been a radical person.
Even if the board of directors makes things difficult for him when he inherits the company, he will not openly break ties with them.
But now, in order to protect Meng Chengze, they are actually using what happened back then to mock him.
Sure enough, seven years of marriage meant nothing in the face of her beloved.
Seeing Xu Zirui's unpleasant expression, Jiang Xin immediately looked away.
"You should leave. If you stay, you probably won't be able to finish this meal."
Jiang Xin's words were like sharp daggers, piercing Xu Zirui's heart again and again.
Almost instantly, his eyes reddened, and he instinctively turned around.
Over the years, he has accumulated a lot of negative emotions.
He never wanted to upset Jiang Xin, so he would just silently suffer in silence.
The appearance of Meng Chengze was like the last straw; although it was insignificant to him, it was enough to break the camel's back.
"Okay, I'm leaving now. Message me when you have time. Once we get the divorce certificate, we won't need to see each other again."
Xu Zirui took out his house key and placed it next to Jiang Xin.
He walked out of the villa without looking back.
Jiang Xin stared at the bunch of keys with the dolls hanging from them, lost in thought for a moment.
This doll was something she had given to Xu Zirui when she thought it was too old and didn't want it anymore.
He actually kept carrying it with him?
The restaurant remained silent for a long time, and Meng Chengze's lowered eyes were filled with contempt and smugness.
"I'm sorry, I've disturbed your family, but I really...miss you."
As he spoke, he grasped Jiang Xin's hand, which was resting on the table.
Jiang Xin then came to her senses, "Ah...it has nothing to do with you. Our marriage was just a contract, it's only in name."
Meng Chengze's eyes flashed.
"But having a name without substance and having substance without a name are still different."
Meng Chengze hinted, but unexpectedly, his words about being all talk and no action made Jiang Xin fall into deep thought.
For seven years of marriage, she and Xu Zirui slept in separate beds.
At first, she would hide a stun gun under her pillow, but it turned out she was just worrying unnecessarily.
Xu Zirui is a gentleman, and his words and actions are very gentle.
Moreover, he exudes a faint air of asceticism, especially when he wears a white coat, making him resemble the male protagonist in a novel.
Sometimes, Jiang Xin even thought he was much more handsome than Meng Chengze.
but……
She has loved Meng Chengze for so many years, how could she change her mind because of Xu Zirui's kindness and years of care?
They were destined to meet but not to be together.
After figuring things out, Jiang Xin gradually felt at ease, and her eyes held a hint of love as she looked at Meng Chengze.
"Don't worry, I'll marry you once the divorce certificate is issued."
Meng Chengze's eyes lit up for a moment, but then a look of unease and regret appeared on his face.
“But if we do that, people who don’t know the truth will say that you drove Xu Zirui away because I interfered in your relationship.”
Jiang Xin had anticipated this and was prepared: "Don't worry, I will give him compensation, enough for him to live comfortably. This is more than enough."
"As for public opinion..."
"I will have the company do a good job of public relations so that everyone knows that we have known each other for a long time before Xu Zirui."
Meng Chengze smiled and pulled Jiang Xin into his arms, his eyes filled with triumph and calculation.
"Thank you, Xinxin."
But Jiang Xin was completely unaware, closing her eyes and trying to recapture the feeling of her past love.
But for some reason, Meng Chengze no longer seemed to have that intoxicating fragrance that once captivated her.
The next day, Jiang Xin sat down in the restaurant, and the kitchen immediately brought out a medicinal meal.
She spat it out after taking just one sip, her delicate brows furrowing tightly.
"Why does the medicine smell so strong? It's completely different from before. Didn't Xu Zirui give you the recipe?"
The head chef scratched his head and said, “Miss Jiang, we have the recipe, but Dr. Xu used to cook it for you personally. This is our first time cooking it, so we may not have gotten the heat and the amount of herbs right.”
Jiang Xin frowned, stirred the medicinal food, and immediately lost her appetite.
"I understand, go and do your work."
I don't know why, but after hearing what the chef said just now, I felt like there was a stone stuck in my chest, and I felt sullen and unhappy.
