After entering the twelfth lunar month, every household begins to prepare for the New Year and the festival. In addition, the weather is getting colder and colder, so fewer people go to the temple to burn incense and worship Buddha.

In previous years, this period in December was a rare time of leisure for Foguang Temple.

But this year is different.

Because a particularly boisterous female benefactor arrived.

Granny Huang looked at Gan Cai'er dressed in gold and silver, and tried to hold back, but in the end she couldn't resist.

She subtly reminded her, "Madam Lan, we're going to the temple."

The implication is that it's better to keep a low profile and keep things simple.

When ordinary people visit temples, they usually dress simply and elegantly, and their makeup is also minimal. Who would dress as extravagantly as Gan Cai'er? After all, no matter how much you want to flaunt your wealth, you can't do it in front of Buddha.

But Gan Cai'er didn't actually go there to study Buddhism; she went there to wait for something to happen.

In her past life, the main reason Ding Peilan was willing to get close to her was because he valued her wealth. Not only did he value her wealth, but he also valued her because she had just come to Kyoto from out of town, knew nothing, and was easy to fool.

So this time, she also has to fully demonstrate that she's rich, very rich! And, the kind of rich but foolish.

"It's nothing. If I dress up nicely, even Buddha will be happy. It means the people are well-fed and clothed," Gan Cai'er said casually.

After saying this, she gave Granny Huang a sweet smile, and then inserted a red gold plum blossom hairpin into her hair bun. In this way, she was wearing two gold hairpins and a gold hair ornament, as well as a full head of gold flowers.

Granny Huang's eyelids twitched. Was she going to compete with Buddha to see who had more gold? However, she ultimately said nothing more.

After entering Foguang Temple, Du Ke carried his brush, ink, and small charcoal brazier and went to paint under the ginkgo tree, with his servant Fukang and Granny Huang following behind him.

Gan Cai'er then led Xiao Hong straight to the Sutra Repository.

Before coming, Gan Cai'er had already inquired about it. Zhuge Yunzhi was practicing at Foguang Temple, focusing solely on studying Buddhist scriptures and doctrines, and never paying attention to worldly affairs. Except for occasionally appearing at major Dharma assemblies, he basically stayed in the Sutra Repository.

The Sutra Repository is located in the back of the temple. It is not a pavilion, but a courtyard with about ten rooms of various sizes.

Ordinary people cannot enter the library. Even monks of the temple must apply to the temple officials first and obtain permission before entering with a small bronze token.

Gan Cai'er walked around the courtyard wall of the Sutra Repository twice. She felt that waiting at the entrance of the Sutra Repository indefinitely for a chance encounter with Ding Peilan was too slow. She didn't know when Ding Peilan would come, and she couldn't just wait foolishly every day.

She glanced at the low courtyard wall and decided to make some noise to lure the snake out of its hole.

So she chose a tree and prepared to climb over the wall.

Xiao Hong was terrified and grabbed her around the waist.

“Miss, my dear miss, this is a temple! You can’t climb over the walls, or the Bodhisattva will be angry.”

Gan Cai'er thought for a moment, then knelt down and kowtowed three times to the sky, muttering, "Heaven above, I was just climbing a wall, I had no intention of doing anything evil. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, please turn a blind eye."

Xiao Hong was stunned. Could this really be possible?!

Seeing Xiao Hong's dazed look, Gan Cai'er smiled and patted her, saying, "Don't worry, the Bodhisattva is perfectly fine. If he wants to blame me, he'll make sure I can't climb over the wall. If I manage to climb over, it means he'll agree."

"There is a divine will in the dark, that's what it means."

Xiao Hong glanced at her young mistress, wondering if this was some kind of nonsense.

"Xiao Hong, you stay outside the courtyard and keep watch for me. If anything seems amiss, go find Granny Huang."

After saying that, Gan Cai'er climbed the tree.

She was a wild child, and climbing walls and trees was no problem for her, let alone a low wall that was only about the height of a person.

In the blink of an eye, she had climbed into the courtyard of the library.

The courtyard was quiet, with no monks moving about, and only the doors of three or five side rooms were half-open.

"Master Fanjing, Master Fanjing, are you there?" Gan Cai'er called out.

Her voice was cheerful, like pearls falling on a jade plate, clear and crisp. But to the monks, it was like a thunderclap from a clear sky, and they were all taken aback!

With a series of "whoosh" sounds, the doors of several rooms suddenly burst open, and more than twenty people poured out, surrounding Gan Cai'er.

"Female benefactor, how did you get in?" a monk questioned.

"You climbed over the wall to get in," Gan Cai'er said, pointing to the courtyard wall behind her with a beaming smile.

“Does the female benefactor know that no one may enter our temple’s scripture pavilion without permission? Those who violate this rule will be expelled and never allowed to enter Foguang Temple again.” The monk’s tone was very stern.

"The library houses Buddhist teachings and scriptures. I came here specifically to learn about Buddhism, so why can't I enter?"

"Or is it that only you senior monks can see the Dharma, and we lowly women are not allowed to?"

"But don't the Buddhist scriptures say that all beings are equal? Is the Buddha breaking his word, or are you monks bullying people!"

When it comes to being argumentative and unreasonable, Gan Cai'er has been a master since childhood. Her crisp, clear words, one after another, left the monks speechless for a time.

“I read in a storybook that people would go through eighty-one tribulations to obtain the true scriptures. I’m interested in Buddhism, so what’s a little wall climbing over?”

"Are you going to put me through eighty-one trials as well?"

Gan Cai'er blinked her big eyes and looked at the monks with a sincere expression.

The monks all fell silent upon hearing this. Did she intend to do it eighty more times? This time it was climbing over the wall; who knew what she'd do next?

Actually, this wasn't the first time Foguang Temple had encountered such a situation. Since Zhuge Yunzhi entered the temple to cultivate, such incidents had occurred occasionally. Many women admired him, and even more were curious about him, but this was the only person who dared to scale the wall so brazenly and directly confront him.

“Fellow senior brothers and senior uncles, since this female benefactor has come to find me, then let me come.”

With a clear and melodious voice, Zhuge Yunzhi stepped out from behind the crowd.

Well, since he's here for Zhuge Yunzhi, let him handle it himself.

The monks glanced at Zhuge Yunzhi silently, then clasped their hands together and quietly withdrew.

“Female benefactor, please follow me.”

"Oh."

Gan Cai'er followed Zhuge Yunzhi into a side room, which seemed to be a place for copying scriptures.

The two sat opposite each other.

"What would you like to ask, female benefactor?" Zhuge Yunzhi asked Gan Cai'er in a calm voice.

Uh... climbing over the wall was just a spur-of-the-moment decision on her whim; she had no Buddhist teachings to ask about.

Her eyes darted around quickly, and an idea came to her: "I would like to ask the master, what is emptiness?"

Zhuge Yunzhi paused for a moment, then said, "Why does the female benefactor ask such a question?"

“A few days ago, I had the privilege of listening to the Master’s sermon, but no matter how much I listened, I just couldn’t understand it. These past few days, I’ve been thinking about this matter a lot at home, and I haven’t been able to eat or sleep well, so I came to the temple again to seek the Master’s guidance.”

Zhuge Yunzhi slowly fiddled with the Buddhist prayer beads in his hand, his eyes slightly lowered, his voice calm and undisturbed: "If you forget this matter, then it is all in vain."

In just three sentences, Gan Cai'er had Zhuge Yunzhi bring her out of the library.

However, Gan Cai'er went again the next day, and climbed over the wall into the courtyard as if she knew the way well.

"Master Fanjing, Master Fanjing, are you there?"

The sound was as crisp and pleasant as it had been yesterday.

The monks all pushed open the door again and came out. When they saw Gan Cai'er again, they couldn't help but look at Zhuge Yunzhi.

“I went back yesterday and forgot about it all night, but I just can’t forget it. So, how can I get rid of it?” Gan Cai’er looked at Zhuge Yunzhi with sincere eyes.

So, Gan Cai'er was led back to the same room as yesterday. This time, Zhuge Yunzhi took out a scripture, sat up straight, and began to preach.

Half an incense stick later, Gan Cai'er ran away on her own.

On the third day, Gan Cai'er was standing under the wall again, preparing to climb over. A young monk came over and handed her a small bronze plaque.

"Madam Lan, you should use the main entrance."

Huh? This actually lets her enter the library openly and legitimately? She thought she'd have to climb over the wall every day. Gan Cai'er happily accepted the small bronze token.

As Gan Cai'er walked, she suddenly stopped and turned her head to ask, "Master, how did you know I was Madam Lan?"

"The deeds of Madam Lan these past two days have already spread throughout the temple. It would be difficult not to know who she is."

She only wanted to make a little noise, but she didn't expect it to be this big.

Gan Cai'er's affair not only spread throughout Foguang Temple, but even the Regent's Palace received the tip.

Fan Sui held the letter and looked at it for a long time, only to find it absurd.

Madam Lan developed a strong admiration for Zhuge Yunzhi after a lecture, and even used Du Ke as a pretext to force him to paint at the temple in the freezing cold, just to see Zhuge Yunzhi.

This is... really hard to judge.

Fan Sui seemed to see a vast expanse of lush green grassland atop the Orchid Pavilion boat. That man was none other than the son of the Duke of Xin; this Lady Lan was far too audacious.

Thus, Du Ke's daily visits to Foguang Temple were quietly and unnoticed and included in the "Lanting Boat" dossier.

This is truly a wonderful misunderstanding.

On the fifth day, Gan Cai'er finally met Ding Peilan, who had come after hearing the news.
