Chapter 39: Helping Out in the Kitchen
"You still haven't controlled your strength?"
"How could that be? It was just an accident. I will never let this happen again."
Upon hearing her daughter's assurance, Shang Qing's lips curled into a smile once again. She picked up the basket she had brought back earlier and led the three children up the back mountain.
Upon hearing this, Lao Zong immediately stepped forward and asked a couple of questions in a low voice, then followed behind with a wood-chopping knife in hand.
But just as he was about to leave the courtyard, he felt a gaze from behind and had to turn around.
"Don't let them get into danger."
"Yes."
Lao Zong quickly caught up with him.
Because they had marked everything beforehand, the group quickly gathered their belongings and carried the chopped wood and all the seedlings back to their little hut.
"If we can support ourselves, we will have a substantial income."
"Is what Mom said true? Can these spicy and numbing things really be sold for money?"
Shang Qing didn't explain directly, but instead patted Gu Pan'er's belly.
Not understanding what was going on, she looked at Gu Nian'er with a puzzled expression, wanting to ask more questions, when she heard the other person exclaim in realization.
"It's the fish that Mother cooked before!"
"Fish? Does that mean Mother is going to the city to be a cook? Won't she have time to come back?"
The two children, fearing they would be abandoned, clung tightly to Shang Qing, refusing to let him leave.
She patted the two ornaments on her legs with a hint of helplessness.
"Mother has already sold the recipes to them, but these are the essence of the dishes, so we have to send them some every now and then."
"In other words, if these fruits stop growing one day, we'll have to go find Liu the Scarface again."
The child, who had just been teary-eyed, immediately let go of Shang Qing's hand, ran quickly into the yard, moved various tools outside, and began tending to the seedlings.
I wanted to tell them not to be so nervous, but then I noticed that the two children had already started picking up sticks to support the fragile branches.
"Looks like we'll be busy for a while. Why don't we work on the ingredients first?"
"what!"
As if in response, San'er, who had been held in his arms, let out a soft "ah," then hooked her delicate little hands around Shang Qing's neck, smiling and revealing her two tiny teeth.
Since it was a recipe I remembered, I quickly arranged everything and put it in the empty spice bottle.
"This amount is only enough for two or three uses, it's not nearly enough."
"Mother, we've gathered quite a lot more. Do you need it? If not, we'll dry it and grind it into powder."
That's one way to do it.
Shang Qing glanced at the wild chilies in the children's hands, thought for a moment, and finally took out a round bamboo tray and placed the items on it.
But instead of using her usual methods to process it, she put it directly into a pot, added a lot of coarse salt, and kept stir-frying it.
As the temperature around the pot begins to rise, the salt starts to absorb the color and spiciness of the chili peppers.
Once the wild chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns are completely dry, pour them into the bowl next to you.
The two children, filled with curiosity, dipped their fingers in the solution and put it directly into their mouths.
The next moment, Shang Qing heard a gasp from behind him.
"Spicy! Mom, this is clearly salt, why is it so spicy!"
Why do you all want to try it?
Upon seeing the two extra holes in the salt, Shang Qing immediately poured warm water into the mouths of the two people, mouthful by mouthful.
Only when they stopped complaining about the spiciness did he breathe a sigh of relief and quickly put the successfully made spicy salt into a cloth bag.
"Send these over as well."
"Is Mother going today?"
Shang Qing glanced at the seasoning that wouldn't last many times, shook his head, and was about to say that he would have to wait a few more days when he suddenly remembered the part he had picked on the mountain. He immediately opened the basket that was placed to the side.
There's a considerable amount inside; in fact, it's safe to say that it's unlikely to be used up within seven days.
But Shang Qing was worried that sending too much might make Manager Jin refuse, so he frowned and hesitated for a long time before looking at the seedlings that had not yet grown.
"These should be ready by next week. It's a problem if they pile up. I should go and get them."
"Then shall we go with Mother?"
Gu Pan'er was about to go get the spicy salt that Shang Qing had prepared when a hand grabbed her first.
He turned his head, puzzled, and realized it was his younger sister.
"We still have a lot to do. If this continues, who will take care of the rest?"
"I'm not comfortable letting Mother go alone. Should we wait until she gets back to deal with it?"
But Gu Pan'er knew that the seedlings might not survive until tomorrow, so she lowered her head and carried the remaining seedlings back to the field by the door.
Knowing that the child was already taken care of, Shang Qing carried the still immature San'er on her back and turned to walk out of the yard.
Unexpectedly, the few seasonings left behind earlier had already caused a long queue to form at this previously deserted restaurant.
"You've finally arrived! I was just about to send them to find you."
"Looking for me? Is it because you don't have enough seasoning?"
Manager Jin was a little nervous and wanted to say something, but his raised hand was grabbed by an even smaller hand.
Everyone was stunned for a moment before they noticed the baby on Shang Qing's back.
"I'm sorry, my child is at a stage where he is curious about everything, please forgive me."
"By the way, these are all the ingredients I've prepared. Would you like to try them, shopkeeper?"
He then handed the salt directly to the shopkeeper so that everyone could taste it.
But there were too many customers nearby, and seeing this, they all assumed it was a new dish and gathered around.
In the end, if Manager Jin hadn't taken them to the kitchen, they probably would have been squeezed out of the restaurant by the diners long ago.
"Shopkeeper, you should find someone else. I haven't cooked this many dishes in ages, my back is killing me!"
"Well, you're the only cook in our shop. If you don't cook, who else can?"
The question had barely left his mouth when Manager Jin suddenly realized that someone else could help him, and looked at Shang Qing beside him with a slightly nervous expression.
The others also noticed that the shopkeeper was looking at Shang Qing, who was standing to one side, and naturally looked over as well.
Knowing she couldn't refuse, she could only place the child in her arms in a spot where the child wouldn't be choked by the cooking fumes, but could still be seen.
"I can't make too many either, so how about the shopkeeper limits the quantity first?"
"Limited edition? What is this?"
Hearing the noise outside, Shang Qing could only tie up her slightly loose sleeves and explain as she tidied herself up.
"So, I'm only serving thirty tables a day? If that's the case, won't that make diners leave immediately?"
"This dish is only available at this restaurant, and I would never leave easily just to taste it."
After a moment's thought, the shopkeeper realized that this was indeed the case. He nodded and led the person out to inform the diners of his decision.
Because of this, the kitchen was finally able to recover.
When Shang Qing finished the last item and came out, he saw Manager Jin happily fiddling with the abacus, clearly having made a good profit.
