The Story of a Spoiled Daughter Raising a Husband

Chapter 15 Raising troops to investigate crimes

The father's raised hand hovered in the air, almost falling.

But Ji Xiuping stared at him coldly with his handsome features, his gaze sharp and icy.

The father stared with his mouth agape, a sudden chill running down his spine. His hand hung awkwardly in the air, unsure whether to lower it or not.

"Old man," Tong's mother called out cautiously from the side.

The father then seemed to wake from a dream and remembered his purpose.

He glanced at Ji Xiuping, avoiding eye contact. As the head of the family, he couldn't afford to be outdone. "This is none of your business. I have something to discuss with my daughter. Please step aside."

Ji Xiuping naturally refused.

This stalemate couldn't go on, and besides, Tong Qian had already anticipated this situation, so she wasn't flustered and stepped out from behind.

"Is it about the hairpin, Father?"

Mentioning this, Tong's mother's eyes almost spit fire. It was because of her that her husband slapped her hard several times on the way back, and her face is still swollen.

With so many people at the market, Tong's father first berated her severely, then kicked her a few times to vent his anger.

Of course, Tong Qian was unaware of all this. Even if she had known, her lack of applause and praise was a sign of her lingering affection.

Mentioning this made Tong's father furious, and he grabbed a broom that was standing in the corner of the yard and swung it at the child.

Tong's mother had been watching his every move with trepidation for a long time. When she saw this, she screamed and ran around the yard. Judging from his skillful technique, this was not the first or second time.

With such a commotion, a large number of villagers stood busily outside the simple fence.

There was a rustling sound, and upon seeing this scene, they were as excited as if they had been injected with chicken blood.

Tong Qian stood coldly to the side, showing no intention of trying to mediate the fight. Ji Xiuping glanced at her and saw her brows furrowed with impatience, but he remained silent.

Tong's father was unlikely to calm down anytime soon, so Tong Qian sat down at the stone table in the center of the courtyard and leisurely poured herself a glass of water.

The chaos around her did not affect her mood for drinking tea at all.

After Tong's father stopped breathing heavily, he saw her movements, and the anger that had just subsided almost flared up again.

“If Father wants to cause trouble, he can go find whoever provoked him. This isn’t your home, you can’t just do whatever you want here,” Tong Qian said before he could speak.

Tong's father was too domineering and always had the final say. If anyone disobeyed him, he would beat or scold them. Not only Tong Qian, but even Tong's mother was often beaten.

Previously, Tong Qian was timid. When she saw her father hitting her mother, she rushed over to protect her, but he didn't seem to hold back at all.

Even more tragically, afterwards, the mother would always take her anger out on her, verbally abusing her every time.

This cycle repeats itself, seemingly forming a habit.

Tong's father thought that Tong Qian would protect him as before, and that he would take the opportunity to make his demands without fear that she would refuse. However, he did not expect Tong Qian to sit so calmly, without even lifting her eyelids.

He gave a cold snort and casually tossed the loosely pulled broom aside.

"I've heard about what happened in town." Tong's father sat casually on the stool and sneered coldly, "You're such an ungrateful wretch. Even a dog knows to wag its tail and guard the house, but you! You're trying to harm your own parents in every possible way."

The villagers eavesdropping outside pricked up their ears, hearing every single word clearly.

"What makes you say that, Father?" Tong Qian sneered.

His usually timid and submissive little daughter now dared to question him like this! She's really gone too far!

A heavy hand slammed onto the table with a "bang," causing ripples to spread across the tea in the cup.

Tong's mother shrank her neck and hid to the side, while Tong Qian raised her head and stared straight at Tong's father, her eyes showing no fear.

"The thing fell from my mother's head. I only glanced at it a few times. Why is my father accusing me like this without even asking what happened?"

“If you hadn’t taken that hairpin, your mother would have thought you bought it for her, and how could she have worn it in her hair!” Father Tong was unmoved. “Even if you did, so what? Your two older brothers are married and struggling financially, it’s your duty to help out at home!”

This is utterly unreasonable. Tong Qian was almost laughing in anger. How could there be such a person who twists right and wrong in the world?

It seems that even if she is on the sidelines, the blame will eventually fall on her.

“Father-in-law, that’s not right. It was my mother-in-law who broke the things. There’s no evidence, so it’s best not to wrongly accuse someone.” Ji Xiuping glanced at Tong’s father.

When Tong's father saw someone contradicting him, he instinctively wanted to shout, but when his eyes met those cold eyes, he swallowed his words.

He didn't say anything at first, but continued to attack Tong Qian, "Is it wrong for your mother and I to raise you with so much hardship and want you to share some of the family's burden!"

He always acted arrogantly and bossy, expecting everyone to listen to him. Tong Qian didn't even want to look at him.

Sharing the burden? Ha, that's a nice way of putting it.

If I remember correctly, the couple plundered a lot of money from the original owner of the body. Of course, most of that money belonged to Ji Xiuping, who always obeyed his wife's every word.

Her daughter has sacrificed far more than her father's two sons combined. Once you get used to asking for help, you'll take that habit for granted.

Tong Qian sneered inwardly, "Father, you're being too kind. To be honest, you must have asked the Ji family for at least a hundred taels of silver, if not fifty." The Ji family used to have some wealth, but ever since they took in this young wife, her family has been constantly squeezing them dry. Tong Qian's words were indeed true.

Before Tong's father could speak, Tong Qian interrupted him, "Don't talk to me about the debt of raising you. That's all nonsense. You sold your daughter for those two good-for-nothing sons, and now you're shamelessly asking for money?"

Her words were stern and forceful, each one carrying weight. Her outburst silenced the gossip outside the fence, but the fence was also pushed open by a neighbor with a strong sense of justice. Whether genuinely concerned or just looking for a spectacle, everyone squeezed through the gap into the yard.

Tong Qian looked at her father, but spoke to the group of people outside, "For so many years, I have never eaten a single grain of rice or drunk a drop of water from you. I have only given and never taken. If this is still considered unfilial, then please come out and tell me, folks, whether I am a good daughter or not!"

The father's face turned from pale to ashen; he had never expected her to humiliate him like this. Hearing this, the villagers who had been watching could no longer remain secretive and pretended to be passing by, entering the room.

Isn't he concerned about saving face? Today, Tong Qian will tear off his hypocritical mask and trample it underfoot.

“Father wants me to take on this money, is that not impossible?” Tong Qian said coldly. “First, pay back the few dozen taels of silver borrowed from the Ji family, and then I will have the money to make up for this deficit.”

"W-what money?" Tong's father pretended to be confused, then saw Tong Qian staring straight at him. "That was money you gave us as a gift. Why would you want it back?"

He wouldn't even give me a single cent, let alone pay it back!

The father was shrewd; once the debt was in his pocket, there was no way he would return it.
