Chapter 173 Preparing to Roast a Wild Rabbit
When they arrived at their destination, they saw two other children standing there nervously, their faces full of vigilance.
"What's wrong with you guys?" Xin Yi asked curiously.
One of the children explained, "We were worried that making too much noise would scare the rabbit away, so we've been staying here watching over it."
"It's alright, the monk may run away but the temple can't. Didn't they say the rabbit's den is here?" Xin Yi comforted her.
“Yes, we saw two rabbits, but they were too fast. By the time we ran over, they had already disappeared into the bushes!” another child explained.
Xin Yi looked at the bushes in front of her and realized that it was indeed a rabbit's burrow. There were also some rabbit droppings around, some fresh and some old, indicating that they had been active in the vicinity.
Looking at the dense vegetation in front of her, Xin Yi pondered how to lure the wild rabbit out.
"Sister Yiyi, what should we do? Should we pull up all the grass?" Gou Dan asked anxiously.
Xin Yi frowned. She knew that doing this would not only be time-consuming and laborious, but also not worth it for a wild rabbit.
"No need, you two stand on either side first, I'll get the rabbit out!" Xin Yi commanded confidently.
The five children quickly lined up on both sides, their movements swift and their eyes full of anticipation.
Xin Yi found a stick nearby, then stuck it into the grass and started poking around. She could feel something moving deep inside the grass; it seemed she needed to use more force.
So she carefully pushed the grass aside and took a few steps further in, then stuck the stick in again and continued to stir it vigorously.
This time, the effect was noticeable. The commotion coming from deep within the grass grew louder and louder, clearly indicating that there was more than one rabbit, and it looked like they had actually disturbed a rabbit burrow. This thrilled Xin Yi; she knew she was close to success.
Xin Yi patiently poked at it for a while longer, and feeling that the time was almost right, she quietly picked up an iron nail and placed it in her palm.
Just then, a wild rabbit suddenly rushed out of the bushes like a madman.
"A hare! A hare is coming out!" the children shouted excitedly.
With people standing on both sides, the hare had no choice but to run straight ahead.
In the blink of an eye, Xin Yi seized the opportunity and hurled the iron nail in her hand. The nail flew out like lightning and struck the rabbit's hind leg accurately.
The hare let out a miserable cry, its body jerked suddenly, and due to inertia, it continued to roll forward a few more times before collapsing to the ground, its body twitching slightly.
Several children shouted excitedly and rushed forward, surrounding the rabbit and staring intently at it, afraid that it might suddenly run away.
Xin Yi stood to the side, sniffing the air carefully to try and detect any burnt smells.
She secretly rejoiced that she didn't smell any burnt odor this time, which meant she had finally mastered the dosage of her superpower and would no longer damage the meat of her prey when hunting.
Just then, Gou Dan swiftly grabbed the rabbit, lifted it high, turned around triumphantly, and looked at Xin Yi with excitement and pride in his eyes: "Sister Yi Yi, I caught it! It's a lively rabbit!"
As he spoke, he waved the rabbit in his hand, showing it to his friends.
The five children's faces immediately lit up with bright smiles, as dazzling as the sun. They cheered and jumped for joy, as if they had just won a major battle.
Xin Yi smiled and stepped forward, taking the plump wild rabbit from Gou Dan's hands. She weighed it in her hand, nodded in satisfaction, and said, "Hmm, not bad, enough for us all to have a good meal. Come on, let's go eat some delicious roasted wild rabbit!"
Upon hearing the news, the children were overjoyed and clapped their hands excitedly, filled with anticipation for the upcoming barbecue.
They imagined the roasted rabbit, fragrant and juicy, and their mouths watered.
"Let's go down the mountain!" the children shouted in unison, running ahead with light steps, their laughter echoing along the mountain path.
Xin Yi glanced back at the spot in the bushes where she had spotted the rabbit. She silently memorized the location, thinking that she could come back here often in the future.
After all, a family should be together all the time! Thinking of this, she couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Then she quickened her pace to catch up with the group of adorable children ahead of her.
Xin Yi originally planned to take the children to the riverside for a barbecue, but then felt it was not safe and that they would be easily seen, so she simply took them home instead.
As Xin Yi stood at her door, taking out her keys to open the door, Gou Dan couldn't help but ask, "Sister Yi Yi, weren't we going to have a barbecue? Why are we at your house?"
Xin Yi smiled and replied, "My sister forgot to take the seasonings when she went out today. Without seasonings, the grilled food won't taste good, so we have to go home first. Besides, we can barbecue in my yard, so we don't need to go looking for water and firewood. How convenient!"
After hearing this, Gou Dan nodded in understanding, then said worriedly, "Yes, sister is right, but wouldn't it be inappropriate for so many of us to go to your house together?"
Hearing this, Xin Yi's heart softened. She looked at the other four children and saw that they all had disappointed expressions on their faces, so she smiled and comforted them, "It's okay, your big sister is very happy to have you all come to my house. Don't worry, everyone, come on in!"
The children were delighted to hear Xin Yi's words, but they still dared not be too flamboyant. They carefully followed Xin Yi into the yard, afraid that they might do something wrong that would displease Xin Yi and cause her to chase them away.
Xin Yi noticed the tension and restraint on the children's faces, and a pang of heartache welled up in her heart. After all, it's inevitable that these young children would feel uneasy and afraid when they come to an unfamiliar place.
So, Xin Yi decided to assign some simple tasks to the children so that they could participate and find a sense of belonging.
"Children, I have a little task for you now!" Xin Yi said with a smile.
The children stared wide-eyed at her, curious, awaiting her next task.
“Let’s go and move some firewood from the kitchen to the open space in the yard! That way we can use it to start a fire and roast the wild rabbit!” Xin Yi explained.
Upon hearing the task, the children's eyes lit up, as if they had found a way to exert their abilities.
“Okay!” the five children answered in unison, and then immediately got to work.
