Tangli Fried Snow

Chapter 52 Parting

Sherry knew, of course, that he wouldn't take her home; she was just asking casually. She said it only to make him feel bad.

But hearing him say that, she was secretly glad that she had realized this earlier. Fortunately, she had thought of this point in time. Now that Jin Cheng was making excuses, she didn't feel too bad.

Seeing that she didn't speak, and there seemed to be a hint of disappointment in her eyes.

Jin Cheng hurriedly coaxed her again, "I really will send you back. Those women in the inner quarters will really use cannibalistic methods to deal with you. In a wealthy family, they won't beat or scold you, but they'll force you to drink a potion that will prevent you from having children, or give you slow-acting poison to ruin your health. They can really find ways to frame and harm you every day. You'll be lucky to escape with your life. Once you enter a noble family, it's like entering a deep sea. Without me protecting you, if you live alone in the mansion, you'll truly be left with nothing but bones."

I've watched too many palace intrigue and domestic dramas! They can last at least ten or twenty episodes!

Just as Shirley was about to speak, two maids knocked on the door, interrupting their conversation.

"Come in," Jin Cheng called out.

Two clever little maids brought in some exquisite food. First, they placed a bowl of soup simmering in a clay pot in front of him, then served several meat dishes, several vegetable dishes, and a bowl of steaming hot soup noodles.

It seems the maids are all quite capable; they've been preparing meals for the master of the house quickly and efficiently, and in no time at all, they've brought him such a sumptuous dinner.

Jin Cheng had been busy all day and hadn't had a proper meal, so he was hungry. Xue Li got up from his lap, sat on a chair to the side, and served him his meal.

Jin Cheng first drank a few sips of soup to warm himself up, and then devoured all the dishes on the table in a whirlwind.

Seeing that he had finished his meal, Shirley gave a soft call, and someone who was guarding outside the door came in and cleared the table.

After Jin Cheng finished eating and drinking, his complexion improved.

He gazed at her delicate face, his eyes radiating intense emotion.

Sherry knew that no matter what his reasons were for taking a liking to her, or what his attitude was towards her, he would eventually win her over.

At least for now, he only has eyes for her; he loves her now, doesn't he?

Jin Cheng's eyes involuntarily moved, his mind racing. He blurted out, "How about I find a large carriage, bring you more things and servants, and you come with me to the north? I'll leave you in a city far from the battlefield. I'll visit you when I have time, and it'll be closer. When I don't have time, you can come to me in the carriage, and I'll sneak out to meet you in secret. Wouldn't that be nice?"

Sherry was so angry she laughed.

Are you planning to build a mobile brothel?

In the end, he's just obsessed with his own body and only thinks about how to sleep with her.

Shirley laughed so hard she was shaking, tears streaming down her face. She only stopped laughing when Jin Cheng's face turned sour again. She looked at him and said, "Good brother, please stop torturing me. If I'm kidnapped by the Mongol soldiers and their cart, I'll really die without a burial place. Please spare me."

Jin Cheng replied, "With me protecting you, what are you afraid of?"

Sherry thought to herself, "You'd better protect your own life, lest you get captured by the Mongols again."

She smiled slightly and coaxed, "Good brother, go to the front line and fight. Strive to drive the Turkic barbarians back to the north as soon as possible and make a great military contribution. So great that even if you and your family beg to take me home as a concubine, they will agree."

She gently took his hand and placed it on her fair and delicate face, trying her best to look affectionate as she said, "I'll wait for you here, until you come back."

Jin Cheng wanted to say something, but after opening his mouth for a long time, he ultimately said nothing.

"When are you leaving?" Shirley asked tenderly.

"tomorrow."

She's leaving tomorrow, and Shirley doesn't know whether to be happy or sad.

After a long pause, she said, "Then let me pack for you. I'll bring you some clothes, medicine, and dry food."

"No need, I've already arranged for someone to prepare it. Why don't we have a baby tonight to keep you company?"

As he spoke, he picked her up and carried her on his back.

Sherry gasped as he tossed her onto the soft bed.

Sherry was speechless. The landlord's foolish son still wanted her to get pregnant to keep her tied down!

It's simply wishful thinking.

Thinking of the imminent parting, Jin Cheng clung to her, as if it were the end of the world, and they entwined themselves passionately.

. . .

Before dawn, still half asleep, Shirley felt the man beside her get up. She forced herself to get up and helped him get dressed and wash.

Jin Cheng looked at her tired appearance, his eyes filled with tenderness as if he wanted to melt her.

He quickly finished his breakfast, and Shirley saw him off at the door. Jin Cheng leaped onto a fine horse and said softly to Shirley, "I'm going out to make my way in the world. I'll come back for you once I've achieved some military merit. It might take a few months or a year or two. You stay here and wait for me."

Sherry didn't know whether she was sad or happy, or whether she would ever see him again.

She didn't speak, only looked at the man on horseback with tears streaming down her face.

Jin Cheng was at a loss for what to do when she cried. He wanted to hold her in his arms and kiss away her tears, and he wanted to say a few words to comfort her, but his heart was heavy. Parting has always been like this, "Affectionate yet seemingly heartless." He hardened his heart, turned his head, spurred his horse, and led his entourage away.

As he walked, he instructed his deputy to send twenty skilled men to guard the Hidden Immortal Residence and ensure Xue Li's safety.

The deputy agreed and went to make the arrangements.

Yesterday, the soldiers in the camp made preparations for the march. Early in the morning, they lined up in neat rows, some carrying the flags of the Kim family and others carrying the flags of the Chiang family, and marched in a mighty procession toward the northwest.

Less than an hour after we started walking, a light snow, as fine as sugar, began to fall.

The soldiers put on raincoats and hats, and the 8,000-strong army slowly continued its march northwest.

Jin Chengxin was heartbroken over Xue Li. He remembered her tears when they parted and her sweet, melodious voice beneath him. His heart was heavy with unresolved emotions. Several times he impulsively wanted to turn his horse around and go back to her. He thought he could just let her sit in front of him and take her with him to the Northwest!

However, thinking of her delicate appearance, he knew she couldn't endure any hardship. The Northwest was bitterly cold, and marching was arduous; how could he let her suffer with him?

Jin Cheng's hand stopped abruptly. He knew he had to earn enough military merits before he could come back to fetch her! A surge of heroic spirit welled up inside him, and he mustered all his strength once again.

It wasn't until dusk, when the wind and snow had stopped, that the army set up camp and lit a fire in a town.

He called in Hong Yao, a skilled and mature man by his side, and gave him a few detailed instructions, arranging for him to return to Jiyue City to secretly protect Xue Li. Only after watching him accept the order and disappear into the night did he finally feel at ease.
