Chapter 6 Brave Heart
Chapter Six: A Brave Heart
"The location of the island we are on right now is uncertain. It is about ten miles in circumference. There are several small hills and mounds in the middle, a beach to the east, and a large open space to the south where the Japanese have built a camp."
About two kilometers behind the camp, at the foot of a small hill, there is a spring, which is the only source of fresh water on the island. The Japanese soldiers must have gone there to fetch water every day. We are relatively close to the water source, so we can go to fetch water, but we must be careful and not leave any traces.
The island is mostly covered in forest, which is good for our concealment, but food is scarce and we can't last long. We can't just eat some fruit to fill our stomachs. We must find a way to leave here within two or three days...
Shangguan Yun spoke at length, her thinking meticulous and her logic clear, prompting Ban Ge and Sister Zhu to nod in agreement.
"In addition, I have decided to make some simple weapons and explore the Japanese camp tonight to find a way to leave the island."
"I'll go with you," Brother Ban said, patting his chest.
"Hehe, no need. You take good care of my older sister. I'm agile and good at hiding. I used to go hunting in the mountains when I spent summer vacation at my cousin's house in Northeast China. Don't underestimate me, hehe..." Shangguan Yun looked relaxed.
“Little brother, be careful. Those Japanese soldiers are armed. My leg isn’t healed yet, so I can’t help you. I’m so useless…” As he spoke, Zhu Yanping lowered his head, his eyes red.
"Oh, Sister Zhu, don't say that. We are all good classmates. We've come to this in trouble together, and we should face any difficulties together."
Now that things have come to this, what's the point of distinguishing between us? The wise offer advice, the strong offer their strength. If you need anything from me, Li Dechao, just say the word. "Sir, I'm handing over these two hundred-odd jin to you. If you even frown, you'll be letting down the guy who calls me 'Brother Ban,' hehe..."
"Well done, you're a tough guy, but you'd better stay here. With your size, you're like a bear. You'll be riddled with machine gun bullets before you even get to the camp."
Ban Ge was speechless. He turned around and sat down next to Sister Zhu, chuckling, "Then I'll have to trouble you, Shangguan. While you're at it, see if there's anything to eat that you can bring back..."
"Can you stop being so lewd... I just praised you a couple of times. Take good care of Sister Zhu, and that guy next to her, don't let him cause any big trouble."
“Isn’t this a case of poverty making people lose their ambition, and a thin horse having long hair? Hehe, don’t worry, I guarantee I’ll complete the mission…” Li Dechao then said seriously.
Night fell, and the forest was silent. Shangguan Yun carefully approached the southern part of the island along the familiar path.
The enemy camp was getting closer and closer. Faint firelight was still flickering. Several drunken Japanese soldiers lay sprawled on the ground, while the Japanese soldiers on the watchtower nearby were snoring loudly, clutching their guns.
Shangguan Yun didn't dare get too close, hiding himself about fifty meters away from the Japanese camp.
Nervous! Fearful! Or excited!
Shangguan Yun could no longer distinguish her current state of mind.
Upon closer inspection, the results largely confirmed his guess: it was a squad of Japanese infantry, consisting of thirteen men including the Japanese sergeant sleeping in the tent, a four-man machine gun team, and eight riflemen. He didn't know if they had any other heavy weapons.
As a military enthusiast who was involved in the War of Resistance against Japan, he was naturally familiar with the organization of the Japanese army. Logically speaking, a small camp in such a place would at most be equipped with a Type 11 light machine gun, and would not even have a grenade launcher, let alone any heavy weapons.
The camp was well-constructed, which shows that the Japanese army was well-trained.
A circular fortification, about 100 meters in diameter, surrounded by a simple fence made of tree branches. Due to time constraints, only part of the trench was dug, and it was very shallow.
A passage, about four meters wide, was left on the south side. The other sides were covered with wooden planks or rows of wooden rafts. There was a watchtower in the southeast corner of the camp, about five or six meters off the ground, where a Japanese soldier kept watch. There was a small sentry post at the main gate on the south side, where one person was on duty.
In the middle of the camp was a flagpole, about ten meters high, with the Japanese flag flying.
There were four tents in total, the larger ones were where the Japanese sergeant lived.
A campfire was burning not far below the watchtower, and the ground was a mess, with cans and bottles of liquor scattered everywhere.
It seems that the Japanese soldiers didn't find anything during their daytime search of the island, so they were very relaxed at night. Moreover, they believed they were invincible, which made them lower their guard. Otherwise, given the Japanese soldiers' military prowess, they wouldn't have left a single one awake.
About 100 meters southeast of the camp was a newly built temporary dock. It was very simple and had a small Japanese landing boat moored there. It looked like a motorboat that we often see, but a little larger, and could carry more than a dozen people plus some weapons and supplies.
Under the bright moonlight, a small outpost could be faintly seen from afar next to the dock. No one was on duty today; everyone had gone out to party.
Shangguan Yun carefully circled the camp and quietly approached one of the enemy's tents from behind. It was a place where supplies were stored, but there were no guns there.
Although he was very nervous, Shangguan Yun remained rational and didn't dare to take much. He only took a dagger, a grenade, and a water bottle. He also grabbed two bags of dry food, two cans of food, and a bottle of wine, since everyone hadn't eaten for two days.
He hurriedly returned to the base at the foot of the hill, erasing all traces of himself along the way. Shangguan Yun was extremely careful, and even with his unwavering willpower, his heart was still pounding.
Upon arriving at the base, he immediately sat down on the ground, cold sweat pouring down his backside.
"call......".
Letting out a long breath, Shangguan Yun wiped away his sweat and looked at the people in front of him.
"Shangguan, you're really something! You're even better than special forces. Oh my... there's food, hehe..." Ban Ge drooled all over the place.
"Little brother, are you alright? Are you hurt?" Sister Zhu asked anxiously.
"It's nothing, it's just a little close. When I was getting something, a Japanese soldier got up to pee, and I almost got caught. Ugh... that was close. Come on... let's eat something first, I'm starving..." Shangguan Yun waved his hand as he prepared to open the can.
Seeing the supplies scattered all over the ground, everyone was very happy. Only after eating would they have the strength to fight the Japanese invaders.
In this godforsaken place, where no one can hear your cries for help, it was rare for anyone to show a hint of joy on their faces!
There wasn't much food, so everyone ate some dry rations, opened a can of food, and the two young men took a couple of sips of sake. It didn't taste like much, so it must have been sake. The three of them talked in hushed tones, occasionally letting out knowing laughs.
Fortunately, it was quite far from the Japanese soldiers, several miles away, separated by hillsides and woods, so the drunken Japanese soldiers wouldn't notice it.
Shangguan Yun fed the wounded soldier some water and treated his wounds with wine. He groaned a few times but showed no signs of waking up. He was moaning softly in his sleep. It seemed that whether he could survive this ordeal depended on tonight.
The warm moonlight shone on them. The temporary difficulties did not frighten them. Their young faces showed determination. Even in their dreams, they still had brave hearts.
