I'm involved in poverty alleviation in a primitive tribe.
Chapter 3 Sweet Potatoes
Jiang Ning composed herself, got up, and walked out of the cave.
The entire tribal territory is horseshoe-shaped, with a continuous mountain range forming a "U" shape, and a river forty or fifty meters wide flowing slowly through the exit of the mountain range.
For primitive people, this was an ideal place to live, close to water sources and backed by mountains.
It is said that the area in the middle of the tribe was originally a large, irregular plain. Later, the tribespeople repaired it, pulled out the weeds, filled in the potholes, and made it into a tribal square, about the size of two football fields, for the daily activities of the tribe's underage children and Sirius.
Sirius cubs have a lot of energy and need to find a place to release it. However, there are many hidden dangers outside the tribe for the cubs. Therefore, the tribe has repaired this plain for the cubs and tribesmen to carry out their daily activities.
The tribe's warriors take turns standing guard at the outposts. The entire tribe has only a little over three hundred people, and the tribe's settlement is so large that standing guard is essential to prevent any accidents from happening.
Jiang Ning's cave is located on the right side of the village. The cave was dug about halfway up the mountain, and a platform was built at the entrance, where Jiang Ning set up the kitchen.
There is also a cave nearby, which is where the Heavenly Wolf of the father and mother lives.
Looking out from the platform, several simple sentry posts were built on high ground around the tribe.
Find a few trees of similar thickness and length in the forest, remove the branches and leaves, leaving only the trunks, bury the prepared logs in the soil, and then place a few large leaves of unknown name on top of the logs for shade and rain protection. That's how you make a guard post.
The river is still some distance from the tribe. Jiang Ning estimated that the river must have been very wide a long time ago, so large alluvial plains were formed on both sides of the river. Over the years, the river has become only forty or fifty meters wide, and the narrowest part is only about twenty meters wide.
Across the river stretched a range of mountains. It was autumn, and the autumn wind, accompanied by birdsong and insect chirps, blew gently by. Some leaves on the trees drifted down with the wind. Jiang Ning reached out and caught one. The leaf looked a bit like a maple leaf, with a beautiful mix of red and yellow. The distant mountains seemed like a spilled palette, their forests ablaze with color, a riot of hues.
Jiang Ning took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, as if she could smell the harvest in the air.
This is the season when the tribe is working hard to harvest.
The gathering team had to go into the mountains every day to pick edible roots and fruits, and the hunting team also had to go out to hunt every day. Autumn had arrived, and winter was not far away.
Winters here are very cold, and heavy snow closes off the mountains, so the tribe relies on the autumn harvest to get through the entire winter.
Jiang Ning smiled slightly. Although she had seen this view for sixteen years, everything seemed different to her today. She was about to start a new life.
Jiang Ning slowly walked down the mountain. She had just seen the people in the square starting to prepare lunch. The tribe was still implementing the communal dining system. Seventy percent of the harvest brought back by the hunting and gathering teams had to be handed over to the tribe for unified distribution, and the remaining thirty percent could be disposed of by themselves.
It is probably because primitive people were very active that they had a big appetite. An ordinary person could eat several kilograms of meat in one meal, while the appetite of a tribal warrior was about three times that of an ordinary person.
When Jiang Ning walked into the square, someone greeted her, "Jiang Ning, is your injury healed? Why did you come down by yourself?"
This is Tun, two years older than Jiang Ning, and a member of the hunting team along with Wu.
It is said that he was named this because when he was born, his father brought back an adult wild boar. The wild boars here were much larger than those in the last world. An adult wild boar could weigh seven or eight hundred pounds. Primitive people did not have any particular rules for naming their children; they just named them whatever they saw.
Jiang Ning smiled and said, "I'm much better now. Tomorrow I can go out to collect with Hongye and the others."
The pig disagreed, "Why are you in such a hurry? That's a poisonous centipede. The shaman said we should rest for a few more days."
Over the years, the socially awkward Jiang Ning has adapted to the warmth of her people, which is perhaps one of the reasons that has sustained her in this strange world. Jiang Ning walked up to the pig, turned around, and said, "Look, I'm really fine."
Looking at Jiang Ning's face, Tun could only say, "Alright then, if you feel unwell, you should still rest."
"Ah."
Sweet potatoes are being dried in the square. The harvested sweet potatoes are being spread out evenly, and some people are slowly turning them over with rakes, while others are squatting on the ground checking for any bad ones. Bad ones need to be picked out to prevent them from affecting the other sweet potatoes during storage.
Sunlight helps sweet potatoes evaporate moisture, increases sugar concentration, and makes them sweeter. Sunlight also kills some bacteria and pests, making sweet potatoes easier to preserve.
The tribesmen discovered sweet potato leaves by chance and began to pick and eat them. Sweet potatoes are vine plants, and both the leaves and the stems are edible. The leaves are heart-shaped and grow in large patches.
Some impatient tribespeople would grab the sweet potato vines and drag them while harvesting, accidentally pulling out the sweet potato tubers buried in the soil. From then on, the tribe had an extra food source.
The tribe has a naturally formed large cave. The cave is located underground in the mountains. The temperature inside the cave is low, and the primitive people have discovered that storing food at low temperatures can preserve it for longer.
These sweet potatoes are meant to be dried in the sun and then placed in underground caves. They will be taken out and eaten together in winter. Sweet potatoes are high-yielding and highly adaptable, and are drought-resistant and alkali-tolerant.
Jiang Ning tried burying a sprouted sweet potato in the soil, and after a few months, she harvested a large bunch. The people around her were amazed when she harvested it; they had never tried planting it before and always gathered it from outside the tribe.
The following year, Jiang Ning begged her father to make her a simple wooden rake out of ironwood. Ironwood in this world is extremely hard, and even with all her strength, Jiang Ning could only leave a shallow white mark. Only warriors who use their bloodline abilities can make ironwood.
Jiang Ning found a spot on the hillside where she lived, used a stone knife to cut away the weeds, and asked her parents for help with the weeds that she couldn't cut. Finally, she burned them with fire. After working for several days, she managed to cultivate a piece of land about five meters by five meters.
Jiang Ning asked the tribe for the sprouted sweet potatoes, cut them into pieces, and picked off the sprouted seedlings. Since Jiang Ning grew up in the city and had never grown sweet potatoes before, she could only try it out.
Fortunately, the land here is sandy, which is perfect for sweet potatoes. The climate of this continent is also very suitable, so Jiang Ning succeeded on her first try. The animals and plants here are naturally large, and the sweet potatoes that grow here are large and plentiful. One sweet potato is as big as a basketball, enough for Jiang Ning's family of four to eat for a long time.
In the third year, those in the tribe who could not go out to participate in gathering and hunting would plant sweet potatoes with Jiang Ning. When the hunting and gathering teams returned, they would also help. The tribespeople were united and hardworking. As long as they could have enough to eat, what did a little hardship matter? Going out to gather was not much easier than this, but the harvest was much less.
Sweet potatoes are high-yielding and filling, with a sweet taste. They can be boiled, roasted, or eaten raw, and they are easy to store. It's just a pity that you can't eat too many at once. Over the years, they have now become one of the tribe's main foods.
Survival in the tribe is not easy, and they cherish their young children. Jiang Ning and her brother Wu are twins. When Jiang Ning was born, she was born with congenital deficiencies and was very thin. Everyone was worried that she would not grow up.
Now that Jiang Ning has provided so much more food for the tribe, far fewer people are going hungry in the winter, which makes the tribe members love her even more.
