Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 9 Meeting the Valkyrie for the first time
Halfway there, Henry hunted down another white-tailed deer and put it on his horse.
It's good to bring something when you visit someone's home; you can also have a barbecue, chat, and ask if they'd like to stay overnight.
In the afternoon, it suddenly started snowing and a storm began. Although it wasn't very heavy, visibility was greatly reduced; you could only see about 20 or 30 meters away, and beyond that, you could only see a shadow.
Henry has already passed Plow Village and is probably not far from Adler Ranch.
Just as Henry was riding Flying Snow along the path, his steps uneven, several wolf howls suddenly rang out ahead, followed by two chaotic gunshots.
He quickly reassured Feixue, whose eyes showed fear, took out his weapon, and dismounted. He cautiously approached the source of the sound.
After walking forward for several dozen meters, Henry finally saw the scene ahead.
A man was climbing on a large rock, his calves covered in blood, likely from a wolf bite. A wolf carcass and a shotgun lay not far from the rock, and four or five wolves were circling around it, trying to climb up.
The man was huddled among the rocks, hugging his calves, his face filled with fear, yet he dared not move.
Henry carefully surveyed his surroundings, confirming that there were only five wolves. He climbed onto a large rock; the distance was too far for a shotgun, making it difficult to fire and risking friendly fire, so he set it aside and took out his revolver sniper rifle. He aimed, bang, headshot.
The sudden gunshot startled the wolf pack. After a moment's pause, they didn't run away but abandoned their original target and charged towards Henry. Henry seized the opportunity and took down another one.
The remaining three wolves had reached his feet, but with the rocks providing cover, there was no need to panic for now. He switched to his shotgun, and bang, bang, bang—the world fell silent.
Once the man was finally safe, he scrambled down from the rock and limped toward Henry.
"Thank you, sir, thank you so much, you saved my life. My name is Jacques Adler, may I ask your name, kind sir?"
"You're Adler? Oh, no, I mean Mr. Adler, hello. You can call me Henry. Is your injury serious? I see you've lost a lot of blood." What a coincidence! I've run into Sadie's husband and even managed to save him by chance. Isn't this the perfect opportunity to build trust? Fate is on my side.
"Thank you, Mr. Henry. Could you please help me to the pasture ahead? It's not far ahead. My horse was startled and ran off with me, damned wolf."
Henry knelt down and gave Ark a quick bandage to stop the bleeding. He was worried that Ark might bleed to death on the way, and then he wouldn't know how to explain it to Valkyrie. Given how much Valkyrie loved Ark, she might not even give Henry a chance to explain and just shoot him dead.
Henry helped Ark onto the Andalusian horse, then placed the largest and most intact gray wolf on its back, and rode Flying Snow in the direction Ark had pointed.
They hadn't gone far when they saw a figure riding a horse and carrying a weapon galloping towards them.
Upon seeing Yak on horseback, he immediately leaped off and ran over, excitedly shouting:
“Yak, Yak, you’re alive! That’s wonderful! You scared me to death! Do you know how panicked I was when I saw Rudy (Yakma’s name) running back alone with blood on his hands and feet, and you weren’t there?”
Needless to say, Henry knew it was Sadie when he heard that distinctive husky voice. However, seeing them still talking incessantly, Henry had to interrupt:
"Mrs. Adler, if you don't want your husband to be left with a disability, you'd better go home and treat his wounds first before we talk about this."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Yak. Let's go back quickly."
"Also, thank you, sir. Did you save my husband? Thank you so much."
"You're welcome. Lead the way. We'll go back first; the wind and snow are getting heavier."
In less than ten minutes, the three of them returned to Adler Ranch and tied up their horses.
“Mr. Henry, please go inside and warm up first. I’ll go and treat Ark’s wound first, and then we can have a proper chat later.”
“Okay, you guys go treat the wounds first. I’ll go take care of the deer and the wolf. Do you mind if I use the kitchen utensils here, Mrs. Adler?”
"Of course, please feel free to use it. See you in a bit."
Henry looked around the little house. It was surprisingly cozy, and everything was neatly arranged. He wondered if it was Sadie's doing or Ark's, but probably the latter, since the Valkyrie wouldn't bother with this kind of thing, haha.
After Henry finished processing the deer and wolf and put them on the grill and stew pot, Sadie helped Yak slowly walk over.
The three of them sat around the fire, turning the roasting meat as they chatted.
“Mr. Henry, we rarely have any customers here. Is there something you need? I wonder if we can help you? You saved my life. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you. We will do our best.”
"No need to be so polite, just call me Henry. I feel an instant connection with you all. Would you like to be my friend?"
"Of course I'd like to. My wife and I are very grateful to you. Oh, and I haven't introduced you yet. This is my wife, Sadie Adler."
You can call her Sadie or Mrs. Adler, it's fine. Sadie loves hunting, and she's a better shot than me. She's the one who usually goes hunting, so you should have a lot in common.
“Henry Allen, you can call me Henry or Allen, Sadie. It’s clear you’re an excellent hunter. If you were to take on bounty hunting, I think you’d make a name for yourself.”
He picked up a spoon and stirred the wolf meat cooking in the pot, adding some wild mint and ginger as seasonings.
Henry continued answering Acker's first question.
"I am a herbalist and treasure hunter. I came here for Flying Snow, my magnificent white Arabian horse. I heard that someone had seen it near Lake Isabella, so I went there to stake out for two days to try my luck."
Surprisingly, I was quite lucky; I finally encountered and tamed it this morning. Then, while we were trying to get along and chasing the white deer, we got a little lost due to a sudden snowstorm, and that's when we met Ark.
"I never imagined that Feixue was the legendary white horse. No wonder it's so magnificent. I had heard the rumors before and even went to stake out the area a few times, but I never managed to catch a glimpse of it. Once, I even encountered a huge white bison and almost got knocked over by it, so I rarely went there after that."
"The meat's cooked, let's eat first and chat while we eat." After Henry sprinkled his special spices on the meat, Ark and the others couldn't help but drool over the aroma. There was also wolf meat stew, and Sadie ladled a large bowl for each of the three of them, full of broth.
Some people say that wolf meat doesn't taste good because it has a sour and smelly odor. But that's not true. Once you add some ingredients to remove the sourness, the meat is actually similar to dog meat. In fact, because of the frequent exercise, the meat is even tastier than dog meat.
The three of them had been starving all day, and with delicious food in front of them, they didn't want to talk anymore and started eating and drinking to their hearts' content. After finally finishing everything and being full, they all collapsed in their chairs, too tired to move.
"Henry, are you really a businessman? I think you're more like a top chef. This is absolutely delicious."
"By the way, when we first met, you seemed quite surprised by my surname. Did you know me before?"
“I don’t know him, but I’ve heard of him. You know there’s a bandit stronghold not far southwest of your ranch, right?”
"I know them. I think they're called the Odrisco Gang. I've heard they're very ruthless, often committing arson, murder, and robbery. Luckily, they rarely come to our area. Did you hear about us from them?"
"Yes, when I was passing through the Ewing Basin, I overheard them mentioning Adler Ranch and saying they planned to pull off a heist in the spring. After that, I realized I couldn't hear them anymore. I also killed four bandits who were chasing me on the way."
"Your place is covered in snow for most of the year, and is also inhabited by wolves and bandits. It is really not a suitable place to live for a long time."
I suggest you move to another place as soon as possible. It would be best to move to the south. I heard that if you walk south for two or three days from here, you will reach a place called Emerald Ranch, which is known as the Heart of the Earth. The vegetation there is very lush and it is very suitable for running a ranch.
Perhaps you could help me. I live in Blackwater Town, which is to the southwest. It would probably take about four or five days by carriage from here. I forgot to mention earlier that besides being a medicinal herb merchant, I also have a small ranch near Blackwater Town. You could help me manage the ranch.
Or if you'd like to buy a ranch near Blackwater and manage it yourself, I can help you. I have some connections in Blackwater.
"This... let us think about it. My family has lived here since my grandfather's generation. Everything here holds my memories. I can't bear to give it up all at once. Let us think about it carefully."
"You must be tired after all this today, Henry. Go and rest. I've already prepared your guest room; you can stay as long as you like." It was rare for the Valkyrie to make the bed for him, so Henry couldn't miss the opportunity. Knowing they needed time to discuss moving out, he went to his room to rest. He was indeed exhausted today, having gotten up early to train the horses and then fought a pack of wolves in the afternoon.
