Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 6: Treasure Hunt
After saying goodbye to Ashley, I returned to my residence near the pharmacy. The supplies I had instructed the old housekeeper to prepare during the day were already piled up in a corner of the living room, and had been categorized and arranged neatly in batches.
Henry checked the supplies and, after confirming that the necessary healing medicines, food, and fruit were all available in sufficient quantities, placed the supplies one by one into the legendary backpack.
The supplies piled up in the corner quickly disappeared. He hefted the backpack; it was still incredibly light. Apart from the weight of the leather itself, it felt completely empty. What a magical space. It seemed the backpack was automatically attached to him; he wasn't worried about it falling off at all.
After a relaxing hot bath, Henry lay on the soft bed, thinking about how he would be setting off to find the treasure the next day. He wondered if there was anything he had forgotten or hadn't planned, which route he should take, where he should start, whether he should stop by Sadie to remind her, or if it was possible to take her and Ark (Sadie's husband) with him... His thoughts drifted away, and he drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Henry, full of energy, ate breakfast for several people before heading to the weapons shop. He needed to stock up on weapons and ammunition. Right now, he only had an old-fashioned cowboy revolver, and if it broke or was accidentally lost during a fight, he would be at a disadvantage.
He was always prepared, liked to take the initiative, and never put himself in danger.
Browsing through the weapons in the shop, Henry selected a Schofield revolver, a Lemat revolver, a semi-automatic shotgun, and a rolling sniper rifle, along with all the accessories. He also purchased a considerable amount of explosives, Molotov cocktails, daggers, torches, lanterns, and a large quantity of various types of ammunition.
The arms shop owner was all smiles when he saw Henry buying so much. He was incredibly enthusiastic, bringing Henry a cup of coffee and even offering him a 15% discount.
He spent nearly $1000 in one go. Henry was left with less than $200. If he had more money, he would have wanted to buy one of every type of weapon.
Henry actually prefers the M1899 pistol to a revolver. The M1899 not only has a stylish appearance, high magazine capacity, and a fast rate of fire, but it also reloads very quickly. Having a couple of them would make the gunfire unstoppable. However, this shop doesn't have any in stock; it needs to be custom-made because its price is also quite high, reaching an astonishing $350. It's rarely bought; it's more of a luxury item. Keep in mind that a 100-yuan sniper rifle only sells for a little over $100, less than $200 these days.
After I get the gold bars and exchange them, I'll go to Saint Denis and play a couple of rounds. As the largest city in the West with hundreds of thousands of people, they definitely have them in stock.
After carrying a large bag of weapons and ammunition outside to a corner, he put them one by one into his backpack.
Arriving at Blackwater train station, Henry bought a train ticket to Strawberry. After thinking it over last night, he abandoned his original plan to travel from east to west, eventually reaching Plowshare Village to find Sadie. While the snow wasn't too deep yet, he decided to first retrieve the six gold bars from Mount Sean, north of Strawberry. (The location of the gold bars cannot be shown in the image; see the chapter description.)
Head north to Lake Isabella to see if you can spot the legendary, exquisite Arabian white horse. Then, pass through Plowshare Village to Adler Ranch for a chance encounter with the Valkyrie. After that, cross the hills to reach the Indian village, and finally, take the train from Annesburg to the Saint Denis black market to exchange your money for cash.
Henry arrived in Strawberry Town in the evening. Strawberry Town isn't large, with only a few dozen buildings and a few thousand inhabitants. It used to be a logging town, prosperous for a time, but declined after timber resources dwindled. He heard that the current mayor is planning to transform the town into a tourist destination, restoring its former glory.
Although no results have been seen yet, the accommodations in the town are quite good. Henry plans to stay tonight at the most luxurious Daryl Hotel in the town center, which is close to the police station and has a very good security, so he doesn't have to worry about encountering any trouble.
Moreover, the bathhouse offers a pretty good scrubbing service; for just 50 cents, you can hire a bunny girl for a proper scrubbing. Of course, it's a legitimate scrubbing service, nothing "bad" will happen.
If you want something less formal, that's a different price. Most girls are willing to pay that; if they aren't, it means you haven't offered enough.
Don't ask Henry why he's so familiar with it; he just heard it from others.
He stated that he was a decent person, and that his disdain for women in this profession stemmed from his exposure to many beautiful young women in major eastern cities. He added, "Who knows how safe it is? What if I get a disease? These days, diseases are very difficult to treat."
Nothing happened that night. The next day, Henry changed into his bounty hunter's clothes and went to the stables to buy a horse to go into the mountains. He'd have to ride horses for most of the journey ahead. Once back in Blackwater, he'd need to find connections to get a legitimate bounty hunter's license that would allow him to apprehend criminals across state lines, making things easier when he went out on business.
The stables in Strawberry Town primarily produce three types of horses: Thoroughbreds, Dutch Warmbloods, and Andalusian horses. Thoroughbreds are racehorses, the fastest. Dutch Warmbloods are pack horses, known for their stamina and strong carrying capacity. However, both types of horses are quite timid and easily startled.
This trip requires venturing into the snow-capped mountains, where there's a very high probability of encountering wolves and black bears. The horse needs to be brave; otherwise, it might get startled and throw you off, and if you're unlucky, you'll end up as part of the wolf pack.
Before long, Henry selected a pure white Andarusian horse, the only male warhorse here. Although it wasn't as brave as Alden, it was still the best one in the area. After equipping it with the necessary gear and purchasing a lot of horse supplies, Henry basically spent all the money he had left.
I mounted my horse and rode north along the mountain path, encountering many squirrels and plump wild rabbits along the way. They weren't afraid of people; when they sensed someone, they would stand up and stare at you. As you approached, they would dart away, then watch you from a distance until they disappeared from sight.
Henry regretted not bringing a bow or a hunting rifle. If it weren't for the fact that a single shot from a sniper rifle would likely shatter his body, he would have loved to catch a few wolves to take into the mountains for a meal. He could also throw them out to distract the wolves if they encountered a pack.
Not far along, Henry encountered another group of gray rabbits. ...Unable to resist, he activated Dead Eye and used his revolver to shoot three of them. The rabbits weren't exactly pristine, but so be it; they weren't meant to be displayed anyway. These things are difficult to fight with a revolver without activating Dead Eye. Henry planned to enter the mountains at full strength, but activating Dead Eye depletes his stamina, requiring a recovery time. Therefore, he hadn't initially considered using the revolver, but ultimately couldn't resist the temptation of the food. Anyway, he brought plenty of medicine; if necessary, he could just take a bottle.
He picked up the three plump wild rabbits, hung them on the saddle, and continued on his way. The road began to narrow, and there were far fewer people around; he wouldn't encounter a single one for a long time.
Before they knew it, it was noon. Henry took out some salted meat jerky from his backpack and chewed it slowly to replenish his energy. Every now and then, he would feed the white horse a carrot.
Reaching a fork in the road, a scream suddenly echoed from a nearby path. Someone had fallen from their horse, clutching their leg and screaming. Henry removed his revolver and slowly rode over. In the wilderness, one must be cautious in unexpected situations and never dismount or grab weapons lightly. This was a lesson learned the hard way from playing games.
Upon seeing someone approaching, the man immediately called out to Henry, "Sir, sir, do you have any antidote or medicine for treating injuries? I was just passing by that big tree when a poisonous snake suddenly darted out and bit my leg."
"Sir, please save me, I will repay you."
It didn't seem fake, so Henry didn't approach. He simply grabbed a bottle of healing medicine and tossed it over. His backpack was full of all sorts of medicines anyway, and he was always happy to save someone's life on a whim.
The man was overjoyed when he saw the medicated wine that Henry threw to him. He quickly picked it up, gulped down half of it, and poured the other half onto the bite wound.
"Thank you, kind sir. This bottle of medicinal wine will allow me to make it back to Strawberry Town to treat my wounds. I don't have much money on me right now, but I often go to the general store in Strawberry Town. If you have time to come to Strawberry Town, please be sure to look for me. I will thank you then. Thank you very much, sir. May I ask your name?"
"My name is Henry Allen. It was nothing. Are you alright now?"
"Much better. The venom has been suppressed. I should be able to make it back to town without any problem. Thank you again, Mr. Allen."
"Alright, you can go back now. I have things to do and need to get going. Goodbye."
