Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 31 Spring is coming
When Henry arrived at the building materials market, Megan had already learned most of the details from the shop owners and was just waiting for Henry to come and choose the final option.
However, Henry did not make a choice. Instead, he asked his boss to recommend a reliable construction company. He needed to build a lot of things and required professional personnel to plan them properly.
Knowing that Henry was going to build a luxurious estate in Guy Bay, the building materials supplier didn't dare to be negligent. In the end, through the supplier's introduction, Henry chose a construction company that looked very professional, had a long history, and was quite large. It was said that the estates of the two major families in Rhodes and many villas in the wealthy area of Saint Denis were built by their company.
After the person in charge carefully recorded Henry's requirements for the main building's construction materials, general shape, as well as several annex buildings, a school, a tower, a horse farm, a planting area, and greenery, he said that he would provide Henry with a rough design drawing, along with the required costs and manpower, within the next two days for confirmation.
.....
Time flies like an arrow. The harsh winter gradually fades away, and the warmth of spring slowly arrives.
It was now March 1899.
During these two months, many important things also happened around Henry.
First, Grant successfully joined the South Precinct as deputy sheriff, and with the strong support of Henry's intelligence network, he was like a tiger with wings, solving one major case after another, as well as countless minor ones, which greatly improved the security situation in the South Precinct. His outstanding performance earned him and Henry extremely high prestige and won the hearts of the people.
Furthermore, Grant was never stingy with his bounty money, often treating officers to drinks, which earned him the affection of many officers besides the South District Sheriff and the praise of Chief Dunbar. With his abilities and current reputation, given the right opportunity, he could easily be promoted to sheriff in charge of a district.
The second is the bootlegging business:
The moonshine business was booming. Lafite and Shrewynn, upon their release, quickly became a sensation in Blackwater Town with their unique flavors and affordable prices. Those who tasted them raved about them, as if they had discovered a treasure. Shrewynn was sweet, rich, and full-bodied, leaving a lingering aftertaste. Its smooth, velvety texture caressed the tongue, creating a truly intoxicating experience. Lafite, with its unique flavor and rich aroma, conquered countless palates. The low prices of Lafite and Shrewynn made these two fine wines accessible to a wider audience. Their arrival was like a breath of fresh air, dispelling the stagnation of expensive wines and allowing people to experience the unique charm of moonshine. In Blackwater Town, Lafite and Shrewynn became the talk of the town, with everyone discussing their deliciousness and unique qualities. Their taste and price made other moonshine wines pale in comparison, unable to compete in the market.
The enormous profits from bootlegging, like a torrent, quickly filled Henry's treasury, which had been nearly depleted by building the Quaker Bay estate, causing his wealth to skyrocket and surpass its previous peak.
As bootlegging profits grew, so did various problems. However, these issues were quickly suppressed by the guards with a firm hand. After all, Henry donated $2000 a month to the police department (and increased the donation amount as bootlegging profits rose), which increased the salaries of the department's more than 100 officers by a quarter each month. In addition, they enjoyed free drinks every day. Before Henry's arrival, their lives were far less comfortable than they were now. It could be said that Henry was practically a boss to them.
As for the trouble outside town, Ashley and Carl handled it directly. Their team continued to grow, and as profits increased, Carl recruited more than ten skilled men. During this time, they also repelled two attempts by the Howling Wolf Gang.
The third was the arrival of Native American tribes:
In February, Flying Eagle and Falling Rain led their people, driving dilapidated horse-drawn carriages, across the vast snow-capped mountains to reach the Bichon Wish.
Upon receiving the news brought back by the flying eagle, Chief Luoyu realized that continuing to hold out was hopeless. To prevent his people from dying one by one, he finally made the difficult decision to abandon the place and resolutely led his tribe to migrate.
Henry was surprised that Flying Eagle had brought the entire tribe back with him, and he was even more surprised that Chief Rainfall possessed such courage.
He settled them in Beecher's Wish and warned them to be wary of the Skinning Brothers gang from the Hightree region. He stipulated that tribesmen must patrol the camp. Their livelihoods were threefold: growing fruits and vegetables, raising livestock (at that time, the government did not allow Native Americans to graze on the grasslands, only to keep them in enclosures), and hunting and selling furs. Henry even rented a shop for them in Blackwater, allowing them to sell furs, produce, and fruit wine, for which he would only receive a token share each month.
As for the remaining manpower, they volunteered to help with the construction at Henry's estate. Henry had promised to let their children come and learn to read and write together. They were all very grateful to Henry, but they were currently unable to repay him.
The fourth is the progress of the manor:
After two months of intensive construction, the manor's construction is nearing completion and is expected to be finished in just over two weeks. This efficient progress is inseparable from ample manpower. In addition to the more than one hundred people brought by the construction company, Henry also commissioned Li Yi to find dozens of skilled craftsmen from the Chinatown in Saint Denis.
Henry paid each of these craftsmen a high salary of $45 a month, which was a considerable income at the time. It must be said that the Chinese of that period were very hardworking; as long as the money was right, they would work incredibly hard, even without rest. Moreover, the craftsmen that Li Yi found were all highly skilled and made significant contributions to the construction of the manor.
Among the people Li Yi brought back from his trip to Saint Denis, besides craftsmen, were several skilled farmers and an assassin-type talent. This assassin was a Chinese man named Zhang Wei. He was not only adept at disguise and theft, but also a master of daggers, capable of silently eliminating enemies. His agility was even slightly superior to Li Yi's. Had Li Yi not noticed his extraordinary abilities beforehand and made preparations with Antora, Zhang Wei might have escaped. The two became friends after their initial encounter, and their shared hometown connection led to Zhang Wei's invitation to come over.
Later, after Henry assessed his skills and character, he assigned him to a special forces team and treated him the same as everyone else.
Besides the four mentioned above,
Henry also opened a fast-food restaurant in Blackwater, selling hamburgers, fries, and Coca-Cola. The novel and inexpensive products attracted many working-class families and cowboys, and business was booming every day. (These three items were not yet widespread in America at this time. Hamburgers only became popular in the early 20th century, fries during World War I, and the Coca-Cola was created by Henry at the request of Rafael Dick based on a later Coca-Cola recipe, differing significantly from the Coca-Cola of that era. In 1899, Coca-Cola was a male enhancement alcoholic beverage, and it wasn't until 1920, due to Prohibition, that the modern formula was adopted.)
Henry doesn't plan to run the fast food business alone. After all, fast food relies on mechanized production, and he currently lacks the industrial foundation for it. Furthermore, expanding it across the US and even the world requires a vast network of connections—something he currently lacks.
He didn't want to be busy every day; he came to enjoy life and experience the magnificent scenery of the West.
He hasn't decided who to partner with yet; he's just making a preliminary plan to show potential partners its popularity and profitability.
...
I'm not satisfied with this one. I wrote it, revised it, and deleted it again... Time has been wasted. Oh well, let's leave it as it is.
Next, we'll speed things up and get into the main storyline. We hope you'll all support us.
