Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 18 The Black Market and Morgan
The next day
Henry and his group met up with Megan at the Ice Spring Bar to hear the information she had gathered the day before.
First, Megan found out about three black markets.
One is in the central area, just north of the Ice Spring Bar. This black market is the largest, with guaranteed quality, the widest variety, and a solid reputation. You don't have to worry about being ripped off; it's said to be protected by high-ranking figures, so no one dares to cause trouble.
However, correspondingly, the items it sells are more expensive than those on other black markets, and the gold and jewelry it buys are cheaper.
One is in the dock area, near the train station. I haven't found out the exact location yet. The area is mostly filled with smuggled goods, and the quality varies greatly. Sometimes you might get lucky and find high-quality rare items, but more often you'll find defective or counterfeit goods. It's part of the dock gang's territory, making it prone to double-crossing and extortion.
As for buying goods, I heard the prices are the best among the three black markets. Whether you can get the money out intact depends on your own skill.
There's another one in the East District, where there's a large Chinese population. The black market is hidden within a Chinese community. The goods are mainly from Southeast Asia. The items are a mixed bag, with many counterfeit goods. However, I've heard that at least there's no forced buying and selling, and things are relatively orderly; there are fewer reports of double-crossing. The prices for buying and selling items are fairly moderate.
Henry first took them to the police station to get their bounty hunter licenses.
They should keep it safe with them so they can take it out if they encounter any problems with their identity in the future. The patrol officers usually won't make things too difficult for them.
Then they each gave Eagle and the other two $1000 as a share of their earnings during this period.
Despite Eagle and his companions' strong refusal, Henry had been leading them around all this time and had even saved two of them; they hadn't contributed much.
Henry said that he had gained more from this trip and that the small amount of money was nothing to worry about. He added that even if they didn't need the money, their tribe desperately needed it, and they could use it to buy things the tribe urgently needed and send them back, such as medicine, clothing, and food.
Let the three of them do as they please, and remember to meet up at Sofia's house in the evening.
So he took Megan, the little maid, to a clothing store and bought two sets of men's suits and two sets of bounty hunter outfits. He also bought two sets for the little maid. The one she was wearing was a cheap one he bought in Annesburg a few days ago.
As the largest city in the west, the clothing styles here are more fashionable and glamorous than those in Blackwater Town, and of course, the prices are also much more 'attractive'.
After changing into his new clothes, Henry instantly transformed from a bounty hunter back into his former wealthy young master, only now he had lost much of his childishness and gained a more mature air, exuding elegance and grace.
After these few days of adjustment, Meghan has recovered from her previous misfortune. After changing into new clothes, she looks like a girl next door.
Henry planned to exchange some gold bars at the black market, but it was a chaotic place and inconvenient to bring her along. He suggested she wait at the stock exchange first to get some market information, or perhaps sit down and have a coffee. He would come to find her in the afternoon.
Henry first went to the nearest downtown black market. Calling it a black market isn't quite accurate; it's actually a pawn shop called JP, which reportedly has branches all over the United States.
They usually collect legitimate luxury goods, real estate, or famous horses as collateral, and then lend them out.
It's similar to a bank's lending business. The only difference is that they accept a wider range of goods, use more unethical methods, and pay lower amounts.
Henry didn't mince words. After glancing around to make sure no one was watching, he asked directly, "What's the exchange rate for gold bars here?"
The receptionist glanced at Henry's attire and didn't dare to lie to him.
"Sir, do you want to exchange gold bars for US dollars? Please follow me. There are people in the back who will handle the exchange."
The receptionist led Henry to a courtyard behind the pawnshop. She didn't ask if the gold bars were legitimate, since legitimate gold bars could be exchanged for $700 at a bank, while here they were only $500.
"Mr. Michael, this gentleman needs to sell valuable items." The receptionist led the man to the receptionist and then turned to leave.
"Sir, what are you looking to sell?" Michael's eyes lit up when he saw Henry's attire; he was likely a big client. He quickly invited Henry to sit down.
"Would you like coffee or tea, sir?" Tea was still a luxury item at that time, and most of it was transported across the Pacific Ocean from the Qing Dynasty.
"Tea bar," Henry said without ceremony.
"I wonder what you intend to sell, sir, and in what quantity?"
"Jewelry, gold bars. What price are you offering?" Henry said, placing a gold bar on the table.
"Sir, would you mind if I examined it myself?"
Henry nodded, indicating that he should do as he pleased.
Michael then took out a metal rod from somewhere and tapped it lightly on the gold bar for a while. He then took out a touchstone, scratched the gold bar on it, observed it, and then weighed it.
"Sir, according to the current market price, a single gold bar of this purity can be exchanged for $500. If you have five bars, I can offer you $520 per bar."
"What if there are 10?"
Hearing this, Michael thought to himself, "I knew I hadn't misjudged him." "If there were ten of these, just like the one we just had, I could offer up to $550."
“Thirty bars,” Henry continued. If he hadn’t obtained his bounty hunter license and hadn’t rescued Sophia, he wouldn’t have sold such a large quantity of gold bars so openly.
It wasn't fear; with his current strength, he had nothing to fear. He simply didn't want to cause any more trouble.
Now that he has guns and connections with congressmen, he's no longer bothered with hiding it.
Upon hearing the number 30, Michael's heart skipped a beat. Could this seemingly elegant and wealthy young man have robbed some big bank? He hadn't heard of any bank robberies lately.
However, he only thought about it to himself. The rules of the black market were that he couldn't ask about the origin of the items. He just needed to accept them, and the big boss above would take care of any problems.
“If there are truly 30, I will offer my utmost sincerity: $580 per stick. That’s the maximum price I can set, sir.” “And I guarantee I won’t leak any of your information. Please trust our credibility, sir.” After thinking for a moment, Michael felt the first sentence wasn’t enough, so he added another sentence.
“30 sticks, $600 each, you can buy them, I'll exchange them here.”
If that doesn't work, I'll try another company. I believe others will be happy to take my batch of gold bars.
"And don't worry, no one will come knocking on our door about these gold bars," Henry continued.
He wasn't in a hurry to sell; after the Moffer and Wofford deals, he still had nearly $5 in cash on hand.
That's enough for him to live on for a long time. Right now, he's just thinking that since it's just sitting there anyway, he might as well take it out and use it to buy some quality stocks and build up his network of contacts.
When Michael heard that no one would come looking for him, he knew it wasn't a bank robbery, but he became even more cautious. He couldn't afford to offend this ruthless person; this person had wiped out his entire enemy family.
"Sir, please wait a moment. I need to consult with the boss. I'll be back soon. Please have some tea. If you need anything, you can also ask the servants." After consulting with Henry, Michael quickly walked out. He didn't want to let this big order slip by. He knew that the other companies would definitely buy the same quantity at the same price.
Although the purchase price of 600 doesn't earn much, it can still be quite profitable, especially since the volume is large.
About ten minutes later, while Henry was recalling which high-quality companies in this era were worth investing in, Michael returned.
"Thank you for waiting, sir. Our boss, Mr. Morgan, admires you and is willing to buy all your gold bars at $600 each."
Upon hearing the name Morgan and knowing it was related to the financial industry, Henry wondered if this Mr. Morgan was the Morgan he remembered, the one who went from gold trader to national hero.
However, it's not convenient to ask in this situation; we can only wait for a later opportunity to get to know each other.
