Chapter 56 (Owl Feather) Coaxing
Diluc rarely visits the Knights of Favonius; he wouldn't have come here if Jean hadn't been so busy.
Pushing open the door, the first thing he saw was Kaeya holding Klee on the sofa. Her neat clothes were a little disheveled, and the little child in her arms had taken off her hat and was fast asleep. She looked so cute that Diluc's heart softened.
What caught his attention even more was Kaeya, whose little braids were still neatly combed to one side. Perhaps because he was going to hold the little girl, he took off his coat, which made Diluc a little envious.
Kaeya seemed to notice his gaze, returning his look with a knowing, ambiguous expression. A knowing smile played on his lips. However, he simply looked at Diluc and said nothing.
Klee in his arms wasn't sleeping soundly, and Kaeya immediately noticed. He gently patted her back, soothing her to sleep. Klee clutched a corner of Kaeya's clothes in her hand and drifted off to sleep again.
Seeing how skillfully Kaeya soothed the child, Diluc was a little surprised, but after thinking about it carefully, he felt relieved. Perhaps because he was thinking about Kaeya putting the child to sleep, Diluc's footsteps were very light, and his voice when communicating with Jean was also very soft.
Jean and Diluc talked for a while, explaining things clearly, and then Diluc prepared to leave. Before leaving, Diluc glanced at Kaeya one last time. Kaeya winked at him, and Diluc, sensing something, walked away.
Sure enough, Diluc saw Kaeya enter the tavern in the evening.
His clothes were neatly dressed, a far cry from the disheveled state he had displayed that morning. He walked naturally to Diluc, sat down with a smile, and didn't speak at first, simply resting his chin on his hand and intently watching Diluc.
Diluc, dressed in a bartender's uniform, was wiping glasses and ignoring him. Judging from the atmosphere, the two seemed very comfortable with each other.
A little while later, Diluc finished wiping the glass and noticed Kaeya was still looking at him. "Don't you want something to drink?"
Kaeya finally got Diluc to speak, and she looked at him with a smile, her tone somewhat pitiful: "Oh dear, I would like to drink, but I'm afraid my sworn brother will only coldly bring me a glass of juice."
Diluc blushed slightly at Kaeya's coquettish manner. He silently turned away and mixed Kaeya a glass of Afternoon Death. Kaeya looked at the glass being pushed in front of him, somewhat surprised. Because of his hesitation, glistening droplets of water began to condense on the outside of the glass due to the ice inside, making his fingers feel slightly damp.
Diluc looked at Kaeya in front of him. "Why aren't you drinking? Isn't this what you wanted?"
Kaeya looked at Diluc in front of him and had a bad feeling. Usually, when Diluc granted his wishes, he would have to pay some price.
Kaeya grasped the glass in front of him, feeling the coolness on his fingers. He looked up and asked, "So, what does my sworn brother want me to do?" Kaeya lowered his head and took a sip of wine, then looked at Diluc without changing his expression.
Diluc remained calm. "Adeline has already had your room prepared. Would you like to go back and rest tonight?"
After listening to Diluc's words, Kaeya pondered for a few seconds before a smile appeared in his icy, misty eyes. He responded to Diluc, who seemed completely uninterested, "Alright, then I'll wait here until you get off work before we go together."
Diluc smiled slightly upon hearing Kaeya's reply, and his movements became even smoother. Although he didn't answer Kaeya, she could still tell from his reaction that he agreed.
So, it wasn't until late at night, when there were hardly any people left in the tavern, that the two of them went home together.
As night deepened, Adeline greeted Kaia with obvious delight upon seeing her. Kaia behaved obediently, following Adeline's lead, washing away the smell of alcohol, eating a late-night snack, and then returning to her room.
Kaeya glanced at the familiar room a few times before quietly slipping into Diluc's room. Sure enough, Diluc's bedroom light was on, as if waiting for Kaeya to walk right into his trap.
Upon entering the room, Kaeya found Diluc sitting on the bed, watching her come in. Kaeya raised an eyebrow and smiled at him. "You know, some young couples who aren't approved by their families go on dates like this at night. Don't you think we're like that too?"
When Diluc heard Kaeya's words, the corners of his mouth turned up slightly. "At least we're not opposed by our families." As he spoke, he pulled Kaeya, who was watching him from the side, over, and Kaeya sat down on the edge of the bed with his help.
Kaeya's gaze was ambiguous; just as she was about to kiss Diluc, he pulled her onto his lap. Kaeya was bewildered, unsure of Diluc's intentions.
Diluc lay peacefully on Kaeya's lap, placing Kaeya's hand on his head. Then, he said suggestively, "Sleep."
In a flash, Kaiya suddenly understood something. He chuckled, then couldn't stop laughing.
"Oh dear, is my Lord Diluc jealous? Seeing me coaxing the child, does he want to be coaxed too?"
Kaeya's voice came from above to Diluc's ears. Because it was tinged with laughter, Kaeya's voice was like a little hook, tickling his heart.
Diluc remained composed, not refuting Kaeya's words, but simply turning over and lying flat on Kaeya's lap. His fiery red eyes met Kaeya's icy gaze. As their eyes locked, Kaeya gently placed her hand on Diluc's forehead.
Perhaps because of the Ice-type Eye of God, Kaeya's palms were only warm, far less warm than Diluc's. With his palms resting on the skin of his forehead, Kaeya suddenly felt a sense of peace and happiness.
What happened during their youth caused them to miss out on a lot of time together. Even after they reconciled, the gap in their relationship remained a source of regret.
As Kaeya thought about their childhood, Diluc also thought about it, and he suddenly said to Kaeya, "When we were little, I would lie on your lap like this."
Kaeya remembered that when they were young, Diluc was always very hot, especially in the summer. Diluc liked Kaeya's body temperature. It was warm and cool, and it felt very comfortable to hold her.
Back then, they would hide under a big tree in the afternoon, Diluc lying on Kaeya's lap, Kaeya's palm resting on Diluc's forehead, bringing him joy throughout the summer.
"It will be like this in the future too."
Kaiya's expression was gentle, like ice melted by crimson flames, turning into tender water to nourish the new sprouts.
Diluc opened his eyes and looked at Kaeya, and he smiled. Then he got up, took Kaeya's arm, and kissed him, just as Kaeya had done when he entered the room.
The bedside lamp flickered, and the bewildered, icy figure shed its chill and obediently basked in the warmth of the flames.
