Chapter 216 (Pu Fu) Gift
Arecino understood that to get close to a nervous little guy like a hedgehog, you should start with a gift.
01
After the incident at the opera, Furina gained her own divine eye.
Her slender, pale fingers lifted the not-too-heavy Eye of God, its crystalline blue reflecting a soft glow in the sunlight. Funinna gazed at the Eye of God quietly, a strange emotion washing over her, a feeling she couldn't quite grasp—whether it was relaxation or joy. Her mind had simply become suddenly empty, as if she were immersed in gentle water.
"Ding dong."
The noise from the doorway caught Funina's attention. The sound seemed to startle her, and she hurriedly placed her Eye of God. After tidying herself up a bit, Funina went to the door, opened it, and saw an unexpected face.
"Lady Funina, good afternoon."
The girl with cat ears had very little expression on her face. As her voice rang out, an exceptionally beautifully packaged box was held up and placed in front of Funina.
"Good afternoon, Lynette..." Funina didn't expect to see her at her doorstep, and subconsciously replied to her.
Lynette moved swiftly, and the gift box was quickly placed in Funina's arms. While Funina was busy handling it, Lynette continued, "This is a gift for you; I hope you like it."
After saying that, Lynette quickly left. Frynn was left bewildered, then stammered, "Huh? Wait a minute, Lynette..."
Unfortunately, Furness's calls failed to make Lynette turn back, and Lynette herself could only hold the gift box in her hands, not knowing what to do.
In the end, Funina opened the box.
Inside the box was a beautifully made cake, exactly the kind she liked.
The cake was delicious, with a wonderfully sweet but not cloying flavor. However, Funina still had a question: why was she being given a cake?
02
Lynette kept sending gift boxes, one after another. The contents of the gift boxes were different each time; sometimes it was a cake, and sometimes it was a small ornament.
Most recently, Funina actually opened a cute little cat in the gift box!
At first, the gift box contained just a simple present. Later, each gift included a beautiful card with some writing on it.
"I hope you enjoyed the cake that was delivered yesterday. In my opinion, you might prefer this less sweet flavor compared to traditional Fontaine-style desserts."
Yes, it really is delicious.
"Do you like glowing stars? I happened to see these little things at the beach yesterday. They might not be very noticeable during the bright daytime, but they do glow when night falls."
I really like this creature. It can shine even when no one is watching. It is the most genuine "star" in my heart.
"The sun is really nice at the beach today. Hmm... maybe it's a bit too sunny."
Yes, the sun is so hot today; you can feel the heat even indoors. Thankfully, there's only one sun.
......
Strangely, as she read through the cards, Furness grew increasingly curious about the person who wrote them. What kind of person was this? Was they a former fan? But why would they entrust Lynette to deliver something to her?
Funina couldn't quite explain how the words on those cards affected her, but through the other person's daily sharing, she felt a renewed sense of anticipation for her uncertain new life.
03
This time, before Lynette could hand the box to Frynn, Frynn grabbed her hand first.
"Wait, why do you keep sending me things? Who wrote those cardboard messages?"
At first, Lynette didn't understand why Frynn had grabbed her, but then she seemed to suddenly realize something.
Lynette quickly pulled out a slip of paper and handed it to Funina. She then took a half-step back and whispered something. Funina didn't hear it clearly, only catching a few words.
"Brother, as expected..."
Then, Funina heard Lynette's clear voice again.
"If you're interested in this, come here for a coffee."
After saying that, Lynette immediately ran off, as swift and agile as a cat. Just then, the kitten in the house came out, circled around Funina's feet, and meowed affectionately at her.
"Okay, it still doesn't really look like a cat." Funina picked up the clingy little thing and sighed at her earlier thought.
After calming the kitten, Funina picked up the note she had just received. It contained only the name of a coffee shop—a coffee shop Funina happened to know.
Should I go? Funina asked herself.
04
In the end, Funina couldn't resist her curiosity.
Fortunately, the coffee shop wasn't crowded. However, Funina still spotted a familiar figure. This figure made Funina immediately turn around.
Just as Funina felt the hairs on her body stand on end, a hand suddenly reached out from behind her.
"!"
"Oh dear, did I scare you?"
Furnessa turned around and saw it was Linni. A slightly embarrassed smile appeared on the young man's fair face. "I'm so sorry, I just saw you here."
As he spoke, Linni's gaze swept forward, and when he saw his "father," he understood why Funina had come here.
Seeing the person in front of her shrink back somewhat, Linni first gave Funina a bright smile, then said softly, "Excuse me." Then, Linni pulled Funina over to the person who was drinking coffee.
"Father, your guest has arrived."
Arecino put down her glass and looked at the two of them. Linni smiled, then made an excuse and left, leaving Furina frozen in place.
Looking at the girl in front of him, who resembled a captured little animal, Arecino gently tapped her dark fingers on the porcelain coffee cup. "Did you like the gem I sent yesterday? Its clear color should be your type, right?"
Funina suddenly looked up. "You gave all of those to me?!"
Then, as if sensing something was amiss, she fell silent. Funina glanced at her furtively, and finding nothing amiss, cautiously continued, "Why did you give me a gift?"
The girl's mind was always full of whimsical ideas. As if suddenly remembering something terrifying, Funina crossed her arms and said nervously, "I'm just an ordinary person now. Even if you cause me trouble, it won't do any good!"
Funina stared nervously at the executive officer before her. In her eyes, this man was definitely plotting something terrible. She could almost picture how he intended to kill her. Were the gifts poisoned, and was she doomed? Or were there hidden cameras or something similar inside?
Just as Funina was lost in thought, she noticed that the unfathomable executive in front of her was actually smiling. And his smile was... rather... beautiful...
Funina was a little confused.
"That was simply a gift for you. If I had to give a reason," the executive said slowly, "it was just that I wanted to make you happy."
For some reason, looking at the gentle demeanor of the executive officer before her, Funina suddenly felt her face flush. Her preconceived notions about him began to change.
No matter what, someone who could write such gentle and delicate words on a piece of card couldn't possibly be a bad person, right? Funina thought to herself, then accepted the small cake offered to her.
