Chapter 131 (The Bell) Scales
"Don't worry, I'm just a little sleepy, I'll be fine after a nap."
Zhongli's voice was hoarse from the early morning, his eyes half-open and half-closed with sleepiness. His thick eyelashes were long and beautiful, giving his golden-brown eyes a hazy beauty. In the dim light, Dattaria could see that Zhongli's eyes seemed to have become vertical pupils.
Tadalia listened to Zhongli's words, still somewhat worried. Her wet head was still dripping water; the once warm water had long since cooled. The chill in her palms made Zhongli try to cheer herself up.
"Go dry your hair quickly, don't get sick."
Zhongli patted D'Artagnan's head, which was still dripping with cold water, and told him to dry his hair. Normally, Zhongli would have dried D'Artagnan's hair, but he was really sleepy right now.
Indeed, D'Artagnan had wanted Zhongli to wipe her damp head. Usually, in the mornings, if she just begged a little, Mr. Zhongli would gently stroke her forehead.
After Zhongli finished speaking, he lay down and continued sleeping, leaving Dadalia somewhat bewildered. However, he still believed Zhongli's words, thinking that he would recover after just one day of sleep, and they could return to their previous way of getting along.
D'Artagnan pulled the blanket up a little higher for Zhongli. The autumn temperature wasn't very warm, and D'Artagnan was worried that his lover might fall ill. Although he knew Zhongli wasn't an ordinary human, D'Artagnan couldn't help but care for him.
Afterward, D'Artagnan dried her hair. Then she sat in the bedroom, quietly keeping Zhongli company. She stayed by Zhongli's side for the entire day.
During dinner, D'Artagnan tried to wake Zhongli up, but he couldn't. Frustrated, D'Artagnan had to give up.
Zhongli slept very peacefully; apart from his steady breathing, there was nothing else. He didn't even turn over or move an inch. D'Addariya, on the other hand, looked on with great concern; how could he be sleeping like this?
D'Artagnan stayed by Zhongli's side with nothing to do, since he loved fighting. Over time, his subordinates stopped giving him many documents to handle. Except for a few documents that were really hard to refuse, D'Artagnan was mostly idle.
This led to this incredibly bored guy having nothing better to do than stare idly at his lover's sleeping face. But as he stared, this wretched guy started having other ideas.
After all, her lover was very handsome, and when he lay there so obediently, he presented a completely different side of her than usual. This made D'Artagnan's heart flutter.
With a touch of guilt, D'Artagnan moved closer to the sleeping Zhongli and placed a kiss on his forehead. D'Artagnan was still trying to justify herself in her mind: it was all because the gentleman was just too attractive, and looked so good even while sleeping; it was normal that she couldn't resist.
As she pondered, D'Artagnan's gaze fell once more upon Zhongli's pale, thin lips. As she slept, Zhongli's lips were simply closed, their color a delicate, alluring pale pink. It reminded D'Artagnan of the cherry blossoms she had seen during the rice harvest season; the way they drifted down from the trees was beautiful.
D'Artagnan looked again and again, but finally couldn't resist and placed a kiss on Zhongli's lips. The kiss was brief, fleeting, like the moment a butterfly lands on a petal.
Zhongli didn't react, his breathing remained steady, and he slept soundly. D'Addarja's face, however, flushed red; his already fair skin made the redness very noticeable. The red marks behind his ears spread rapidly, forming a hazy pattern.
Although this wasn't their first kiss, nor their first time being intimate, it was certainly a bold adventure for D'Artagnan. Even a warrior known for his directness would blush when secretly kissing his lover.
D'Artagnan spent the whole day by Zhongli's bedside. When he got bored, he went to the study and found the books Zhongli had read. He listlessly flipped through a few pages, but he didn't understand them very well, so he sheepishly put them back.
Then, on a sudden impulse, he found paper and pen and took them to his bedroom. Luckily, there was a small table there where D'Artagnan could sit and write. However, without Zhongli's guidance, D'Artagnan only practiced some words he had learned before.
After D'Artagnan finished writing, he happily held up his writing. "Mr. Chungli, look..."
D'Artagnan's voice suddenly stopped; almost instinctively, he called out his lover's name. But upon seeing Zhongli sleeping peacefully on the bed, this shared joy turned into desolation. D'Artagnan could only try to comfort himself. It's alright, Mr. Zhongli will surely wake up tomorrow.
Thinking of this, D'Artagnan carefully put away the words he had written. He decided that when Mr. Zhongli woke up, he would definitely show them to him, and that would surely earn him praise.
Time without a lover is lonely and slow. In just one day, the restless D'Artagnan watered all the flowers and plants in the garden. She even tidied up her messy study. Finally, as evening approached, D'Artagnan ate dinner alone.
This wasn't the first time D'Artagnan had eaten alone since they fell in love. After all, as an executive officer, he was quite busy at times. However, whenever he had free time or a day off, Zhongli would always have a meal with him.
Gazing at the dim, golden sunset, a heavy gloom seemed to settle over D'Artagnan's heart. His azure eyes, like a still lake, held a coldness tinged with melancholy.
Zhongli's body was covered in even more scales, which even appeared on his arms. A faint golden light shimmered, radiating brilliance even in the dimly lit room. A pair of golden dragon horns also appeared on Zhongli's head. Dadalia touched the horns, and the cool touch made him feel uneasy.
As the last rays of light disappeared through the window, a new night descended. D'Artagnan tidied himself up and lay down beside his lover. Looking at his still-sleeping lover, D'Artagnan could only hold him tightly and gently kiss his forehead.
Good night, Mr. Zhongli, sweet dreams.
Although there was no response, D'Artagnan still gave his lover a sincere greeting. Holding the warm body of the person in his arms, D'Artagnan's anxious heart calmed down a little.
Tomorrow, things will definitely be back to normal.
Filled with the deepest anticipation, D'Artagnan also drifted off to sleep. The bedroom was soon quieted down to just two steady breaths.
