Chapter 41 The first day at work
The first thing Zhou Chuan thought of when she got up in the morning was to ask someone to help her set up a stove. In addition, she also needed to prepare some dry food. That damned Commander Xiao was a piece of trash. Who knows when he might kick her out of the house? Maybe today was no exception. It was better for her to make some preparations in advance.
She washed herself with cold water as usual, and then casually scrubbed and washed the clothes she wore yesterday. The two sets of clothes she was wearing now were the ones that Political Commissar Ma had prepared for her that day, probably because he was afraid that she would embarrass their military region by always wearing that beggar's clothes.
After finishing her work, she went to the Xiao family's house.
The house was basically the same as yesterday. Commander Xiao was still not home. She went upstairs to check on the little girl first. She was unlucky today; the little girl had not only wet herself but also pooped. She carefully cleaned her bottom, changed her into a clean diaper for now, and would wash her again with boiling water later.
After tidying her up, she comforted her for a while, then carefully carried the wet blanket and the soiled diaper out of the room.
As she passed Xiao Ran's room, she was about to knock when he opened the door himself. Thinking that she needed to make breakfast soon, she asked him for some rice: "Go and scoop out some millet, I'll make you breakfast."
Xiao Ran leaned against the door, fidgeting reluctantly, "It's almost all gone..."
Zhou Chuan looked at him for a while: "Then take out some of your sister's milk powder later. We won't eat it, but your sister still needs to eat it."
After saying that, she went downstairs. When the man surnamed Xiao came back, she demanded a raise. It was supposed to be three meals a day, but she had to beg his son for every grain of rice she could eat, making her look like a beggar.
Kids' moods change so quickly. They were nice to her yesterday, but this morning they're already reluctant to treat her. Oh well, she'll just buy the food herself and cook it herself, so she won't have to put up with this nonsense.
Xiao Ran sensed Zhou Chuan's coldness towards him. He nervously watched Zhou Chuan's back until she disappeared into the corridor.
Zhou Chuan returned to the first floor, threw the pile of things he was carrying on the ground, and went to the kitchen to boil water. Working in this place is so damn frustrating.
The Xiao family had a thermos. She filled it with boiling water, then added some cold water to the remaining boiling water. It was just the right amount to wash clothes. However, she didn't wash them right away. She just soaked all the dirty clothes there. She hadn't even had breakfast yet, so how could she be in the mood for anything else?
She didn't wash her clothes or bother cleaning; she just sat in the living room, waiting for the man surnamed Xiao to come home...
After a long time, Commander Xiao still hadn't returned. The little girl on the second floor started crying. Zhou Chuan endured her hunger and climbed upstairs. She checked her bottom and found no urine, so she must be hungry. She carried the little girl to Xiao Ran's door again. Before she could knock, the little guy opened the door himself and looked at Zhou Chuan timidly.
“Your sister is hungry. Scoop out two spoonfuls of milk powder. If you don’t trust me, just stand there and watch.”
People are not in a good mood when they are hungry. Zhou Chuan was in a bad mood and had no patience to comfort the little guy. Besides, what right did she, a mere nanny, have to comfort the young master of the regiment commander's family?
Xiao Ran looked up at Zhou Chuan, then looked down and patted her stomach: "I...I'm hungry too..."
Zhou Chuan really wanted to curse when she heard this. You hid the food yourself, and now you're hungry, who's to blame? But she was an adult, so she couldn't argue with a child. She said "Oh," and said, "Then scoop out some millet, and I'll cook it for you."
The little guy looked up at Zhou Chuan, who forced a smile and nodded. The little guy immediately ran downstairs. Zhou Chuan could only sigh in frustration at his appearance. What could she do with such a child?
Zhou Chuan then carried the little girl downstairs. She stood at the door of the study on the first floor and said, "Remember to scoop out two scoops of formula for your little sister!"
After saying that, she carried the child to the living room, put the little girl on the sofa, and went to the kitchen to wash the baby bottles. Just as she finished washing them, she saw Xiao Ran standing in front of her, holding a small bowl of millet in one hand and a small bag of milk powder in the other.
The little one kept staring at Zhou Chuan with both eyes, afraid that she would make some "unreasonable" request again: "There really isn't much left... there's only a little bit left."
This time, Zhou Chuan didn't ask him to scoop out another bowl of millet. Yesterday, she could still bargain with him by mentioning his father, but now that she knows what kind of person his father is, she naturally gave up any illusions. She figured the little guy wouldn't believe her anyway.
She scooped out two spoonfuls of milk powder and handed the rest of the bag back to Xiao Ran: "Put it away!"
Xiao Ran looked at the milk powder in his hand, seemingly still a little incredulous. After waiting for a while, he realized that Zhou Chuan really didn't complain about the small amount of millet he had given him. Like a little devil, he breathed a sigh of relief, then suppressed a laugh and ran back to hide the milk powder.
Zhou Chuan saw everything but said nothing. The child was innocent; it was the adults who were immoral!
She prepared the milk powder, but the temperature was a bit high. While she was doing so, she rinsed the small amount of millet, poured it into a pot, added water, and started boiling it over high heat.
At this moment, Xiao Ran, who had hidden the milk powder, was already standing by the stove. Zhou Chuan simply let him watch the fire while he went to feed the little girl milk.
After feeding the baby and cleaning her bottom, she carried her back upstairs. She might be going out later, so she brought her upstairs first.
As she came downstairs, she heard someone approaching at the door.
Before she could open the door, she saw Commander Xiao carrying a large bag in. He saw Zhou Chuan but didn't say anything. He unloaded the bag, then went out and carried another bag. In no time, there were five large bags piled up in the living room.
